But what about Thwimps? I think that Thwimps are juvenile Thwomps, while Shoomps are rather a relative of them. This is supported by the fact Thwimps both look and behave similarly to Thwomps, unlike Shoomps.

In Mario and Luigi partners in time it’s confirmed Thwomps can be in romantic relationships… and possibly reproduce. They can also be in a circular shape for their entire lives, such as the case of Mrs.thwomp in the same game. possibly females stay circular?

Seeing as we've only seen one (semi-)spherical thwomp, I'd imagine Mrs. Thwomp is more of an outlier than a good representative of the entire species. I'd argue she may not even be a true Thwomp given her Whomp-like face and arms that don't match any Thwomp I've seen.

@@sprousprou I’d argue every variant of Thwomps and whomps are similar to Koopa, where technically they are different but still fall under the one category of species.

Since we only ever really see throw in ruins or castles, maybe thwops are naturally circular but carve themselves or get carved ro suit certain purposes. That could explain subspecies

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time confirms that Thwomps are formed when Thwomp Volcano erupts. When they first come out, they're in a perfect cube shape, so it's possible that they're carved and chiseled into the forms we know of. Also, we learn from the manual for Super Mario World that Thwomps are ghosts inhabiting stone bodies. So no, Thwomps are not born from eggs. The nests in Thwomp Ruins likely just belong to birds we don't see in the background. The size discrepancy was either an oversight or just done for aesthetic purposes.

Is the Super Mario World manual really canon though? Like if it's not the Japanese one, that can very well be big bullshit.

@@victzegopterix2 The Japanese version of the manual says essentially the exact same thing as the English version. Roughly translated, the passage on Thwomps reads: "A stone ghost that Bowser sets up in his castles and forts. As Mario approaches, he falls from above with a thud. However, if you stay away from it, you won't be able to move forward..." So this detail is consistent across different languages, including Japanese.

Related theory: I've always had thought that the flat-edged thwomps are natural and/or wild, and the sharp ones are chiselled into shape to be more deadly The ones from Mario 64 are probably a different species too

my theory is that the grey thwomps are racist to the blue thwomps and they had a war in which all the blue thwomps died, hence why they don't appear anymore

If the Thwomps use ruins as a spawning ground and die shortly after, it makes me think the "ruins" are Thwomp-made. Like think about it: if Thwomps are made out of stone blocks, and they migrate to these areas en masse to spawn and then die, then there would be a whole bunch of lifeless stone blocks there. Over enough generations I could see it growing and growing into a large structure. Thwomps are capable of destroying bricks with their smashing, so maybe they use that ability to gradually tunnel through the mounds of dead ancestors left behind. Since the Thwomps are square-shaped and only move in straight up-and-down or left-and-right directions, they would carve out rectangular tunnels that could be easily mistaken for flat rooms and hallways.

This begs the question; cloaca? Is mouth a similar multi-function orifice? Do thwomps lay eggs from their mouths? Most likely. In fact, thwomps only having two types of orifice (eyes and mouth) further supports the egg theory as nurturing a *live* child like a mammal would complicate the reproduction process and be a greater risk to the child

I remember having this same idea as a kid! My ideas were something like: thwimps turn into whimps which can choose to become thwomps or become whomps

Your idea sounds more like an evolution idea like Pokemon. Which actually kind of makes sense for the Thwomp species. They can choose to either evolve into thwomps or Whomps

That is the normal life-cycle of a Thwomp, but only the female Thwomps end up laying eggs and perishing to become feed for the children. The male Thwomps keep growing bigger and more powerful for a very long time. Some old male Thwomps have been known to get mistaken for mountains; a deadly mistake as climbing a mountain that decides to jump on you is, understandably, lethal. It is commonly believed between researchers that all the continents besides Belarus and the Greater Mushroom Continent were actually ancient Thwomps that took residence here. It is believed to be highly likely they have since passed away from old age or boredom. The last seven mass extinction events have been mainly attributed to continental Thwomps changing sleeping posture. That is also how 90% of Australia was ejected into space.

Thwomps are probably bred and only very rarely reproduce. Bowser loves them, so I think it makes sense

I think its the mother thwomps who laid the eggs that died shortly after, as part of their life cycle. And the babies learn to slam the ground quickly after hatching, hoping to flatten an adventurer so they can feed. They would go without food for days, thwomping away. Some would die of starvation, the others after they laid their eggs. Ancient thwomps (the really big ones) would be very rare in this case. Thats my theory on their life cycle.

I'd work if we saw evedence of thomps being able to move in more directoins, becuese for them to build a nest they'd need sticks give me evedence a thomp can move sideways and downward in a single life time and then I'd be ok with it

@SpyFoxB On nighttime stages in Super Mario Maker the Thwomps will slowly move to be in line with you instead of just smashing the same spot. This implies that Thwomps are nocturnal, and during the day when we usually see them they're in a half-resting state, like a sleeping dolphin.

Actually, Thwomps are based off the Nurikabe, a Japanese myth creature that is a sentient wall, meaning a Thwomp, Thwimp, Whomp, Whimp, Grrrol, and other Thwomp relatives are Yokai in the Mario Universe. But, yours is a cool theory! My headcanon is that Thwomps and Sons ARE stone spirits, Yokai, but also reproduce somehow, because of Mario And Luigi Partners In Time.

I like to imagine they’re a type of koopa, since they’d presumably lay eggs too. They’re not made of stone like we’ve believed until now, but a type of very tough shell. :)

i always saw thwomps and the various thwomp like things as manufactured entities, like they are carved from stones for their function and then given a kind of life via magic maybe from the wizard koopa and all the different thwomp type things we see are different iterations of the design
