I haven't played it, but just from that one line of dialogue, I probably would've assumed the sand would be near instant death. An entire level being a physics/platforming puzzle just sounds like a thing that would happen.

Another good one is the "Awkward Ride Home" achievement from Prey (2017). You have to keep enough people alive long enough for the ship to get called to come rescue everyone. Then you have to kill every person on the station so it's just you and the pilot on the ride home.

I think Civ 6 achievement "Flight Slingulator" might be a bit more insane. You need to airlift a level 3 slinger. You need to start at the beginning, have a slinger that you use enough to get it to level 3, without it being destroyed, keep it around for most of the game until you get airports (again, without destroying or upgrading that slinger), and then airlift it. It's a lot of planning for a silly pun.

Or the one where you clear a nuclear field with a roman legion. At least it also counted if you used the nuke and didn't need for an AI to use one. ...or the one where you defeat a tank with a gallian Gesate... Civ VI had a lot that required patience and planing. In fact I find it more believeable to get Pizza Party by accident (RNG gave you New York early playing the US; bought great works from the AI and themed a museum; randomly got Da Vinci), than any of the "early game unit in late game scenario" ones.

How about Civ 5 "Longest. Name. Ever"? It requires you to found the city with the longest name (Llanfairpwllgwyngyll). It's 33rd city name for Celtics. You need to found or capture and rename 32 cities to get this one as 33rd

I got the unpacking toilet flushing achievement by accident, where you need to flush all the toilets in every level. That probably says more about me than any other statement I could ever make about myself.

Ever since Duke Nukem 3D I've been clicking and mashing buttons on every toilet I come across in video games. The achievement made me assume that every previous tenant left a gigantic floater behind.

"Flushing Edge Interactivity" is what the trope is called, and it's actually kinda fun to see which games included it! In INFRA, about half the toilets are flushable, and they actually _delete physics objects placed in them_ when you flush! (which actually is used for a puzzle in Chapter 6, so don't go flushing toilets until after you check what's inside first)

Resident Evil 5 has the achievement "Be the Knife" for deflecting a crossbow bolt with your knife. Considering that enemies with crossbows are attacking you from a range and usually even from places you can't physically reach, you wouldn't typically try to fight one with a knife when you're already armed to the teeth with firearms to begin with. Not to mention, the window for actually hitting the bolt with your knife is pretty small which makes it even more unlikely to happen by accident.

I got the Unpacking one without knowing there was an achievement involved. Once I realized that the rubix cube shuffled when you clicked it, I absolutely solved that thing every time. The noise is so satisfying too.

what about Minecraft's "How Did We Get Here", the achievement you get for having not only all potion effects at once, but every single effect in the game? it requires setting up a gauntlet of some of the game's worst, and best, mobs to get dolphin's grace, poison, blindness, darkness (legally distinct from blindness), mining fatigue, withered, levitation, hunger, bad omen, hero of the village...... that means lining yourself up to take a beating, with two blessings thrown in for.... fun?, from dolphins, pufferfish, illusioner, warden, elder guardian, wither, shulker, stray, pillager captain, and humble villager..... and that's *just* the effects that require interaction with mobs or NPCs. only 17 more effects to go!

And if even _that_ isn't crazy enough for you (apparently _How Did We Get Here?_ is actually a _seed-dependent_ cheevo since it depends on good End worldgen RNG), you can always go for some of the _Zedvancements_ from Hermitcraft Season 9. _A Furious Cocktail_ too boring for you? Have a creeper give them to you in splash-potion form for _Exploded Not Stirred!_ On a multiplayer server and a friend's gone AFK? Help them get an advancement or two, so you can be _Awarded For Knothing!_ Or try collecting every single item obtainable in survival to build your own _The Hall of All!_ The possibilities are endless!

Grim Fandango Remastered has an achievement called The Right Way. To get it you have to chose to play the entire game with tank controls. Apparently creator Tim Schafer demanded it

Spider-man 2 has an achievement where you have to go to a baseball field and run around the bases. Considering the fact that you are almost never on the ground and the game has almost no other achievements like this there's almost zero chance you'd find it accidentally.

Reminds me of the achievement from fallout 4, I think it's called home run. Where you have to run around the baseball field (which I barely even knew existed) but in a very specific way, making sure you step on all the plates on the ground while you do it

I got the Unpacking achievement without knowing about it ahead of time. Once I realized early on that a lot of things were clickable and had at least one or two little animations, I went crazy clicking everything. It’s such a good game. I love the subtle story in the background too, so sweet. I have to thank Jane for introducing me to the game- her livestream of it was the first time I saw the game and I bought it immediately.

The half life achievement reminds me of a Left 4 Dead 2 achievement Where you have to carry a Gnome all the way to the safe room, that was such a nightmare to get. It’s almost impossible to do alone

It's quite difficult to do by yourself, I did it again recently since I got the game on steam (originally had it on the 360) much easier if you can find a team willing to help or co-op it! They actually sent a 3D model of Gnome Chompsky into space. If you open L4D2 now, you'll get an achievement unlock because GC went into space :) (edited - wrong initials)

Skullgirls has "Funded!" which requires getting a combo of 829. In a FIGHTING GAME. The only way I've found to get it is to go to the tutorial for the combo breaker and just sit there for like ten minutes while the AI infinite-combos you and you cannot die. A regular match just isn't long enough to get it.

the two i love most from Jurassic World: Evolution are photographing an herbivore attacking people, and helping a dinosaur win a fight, because those require active inaction and intentional use of the wrong vehicle for the situation presented, and both have Claire telling you to take better care of people and/or animals.

One of the most satisfying moments, when you catch him completely unaware. Sure, you probably need some prep, so it isn´t exactly "accidental", but you can absolutely do it without knowing about the achievement.

The Achievement "From Frankfurt to the Andes" from Europa Universalis 4 is probably the most convoluted Achievement in a game full of convoluted achievements. The Achievement requires you to start as Frankfurt, form the Kingdom of Jerusalem (which Frankfurt is not really a prime candidate to do), then forming the Inca which requires carefull planning and finally owning Majorca. You have to dedicate an entire Campaign to it and only the first step in this multy step achievement is possible to get by accident.

Outer Wilds (not to be confused with Outer Worlds) has a plethora of achievements i didnt get through my game play, and im pretty thorough. One for spending the whole time loop flying away from the sun (10000kms), or another for flying so quickly into a planet that you break through the strong water current to get to the core. Almost all the achievements are so strangely specific, youd have to know... Also theyre all hidden and/or secret

"this is not a zombie game" from theHunter:COTW (hit 10 brain shots while hunting) you have to not only go out of your way to hit a very small target on a very flighty animal that runs if you get within like 200m of it (and deer brains are much tinier than you think in this game, you are *definitely* not going to hit it for several tries even with every skill to reduce wobble), instead of the much larger, legal (and heavily emphasized as important - while heavily penalizing headshots) lungs±heart shots. also everything runs after you shoot one bullet so you have to wait like half an hour of real time to set up the shot again... ...and then do it another nine times

I did not know there's an achievement for having to carry a gnome all across the game, but knowing this instantly endears me more to the character of Gordon Freeman than anything else. He really just saq that gnome and felt in him a companion, a friend, an equal, and he knew he couldn't just leave him behind. He carried that gnome into battle with aliens and quislings alike, and Dr Breen just had to settle with the reality the guy who beat him was a gnome-obsessed weirdo. Delightful.

In guild wars, there's an achievement for reaching level cap in the tutorial area (that you cannot return to after leaving). (I believe this does predate the south park episode on the similar feat in WoW, though granted GW's lv cap is 20.... but back when it was introduced, you had to level up monsters by dying to them so they actually gave you exp at higher levels to actually reach lv 20, so it's even more unlikely to accidentally stumble on this)

The "what is wrong with you" one in Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Make five vehicles flip by shooting their horses. And the 'Dastardly' one in Red Dead Redemption, Lasso and hogtie a woman, put her on your horse, then take her to a train track and tie her there...

The remake of The House of the Dead has an achievement and trophy called psychopath which is awarded for killing every scientist in a chapter of the game. Killing one scientist is a understandable accident but killing all of them is doing it on purpose.

I think I've brought this one up before, but Fable Anniversary has the pointedly named "I Did This For A Cheevo" achievement. To get it, you have to headshot a human enemy with a crossbow while in the full crossdressing ensemble (including the wig) while also having a beard.

My favorite achievements are the ones that nod to other games or even other fandoms. The only one that comes straight to mind is "beam me up" in Elex 2, but that one is for teleporting 20 times so most anybody who played the game for more than 2 hours will have got that. Great list as always!

Return of the Obra Dinn was the first game I fully completed. Just chatted with my brother while monotonously clicking through the menu. Also, in a little metroidvania called Islets, there's an achievement called "The Pits" which requires you to fall into the Deadly Pit of Recently Escaped Spirits. The only catch is, you have to open it with a lever on the other side of the room, and by the time you run over and try to jump in, the pit closes. So, you have to upgrade your dash and try it. By which time, you'll have absolutely no reason to be in that area of the game.

"Impossible, it can't be, is it?" from Payday 2 requires you to find and secure the Almir's Toast item on the White Xmas heist. Given that not only does it have a 0.25% chance of spawning from opening a box (if I remember correctly) on a heist which also has an achievement for opening 25 boxes, but also it reduces your movement speed to near zero, and the helicopter which you use to extract it in only stays for about 2 minutes at a time before leaving, and having about 4 different locations it can spawn in, while still under a full police assault, I doubt anyone did this completely by accident, or without knowing it was an achievement.

One of Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition's rarest achievements is to steal a side quest baby from the Shadows of Undrentide expansion, export the character, then bring the character (and the baby) into the Hordes of the Underdark expansion, and throw the baby into a Beholder console. It's titled, and I quote, "That Baby does NOT go there".

Ah yes, Little Rocket Man, such a pain. Then Black Mesa, the remake of Half-Life 1, comes and has not one, not two, but THREE super specific achievements. Rare Specimen, Rarest Specimen, and Pepperoni Precipitation. All of which involved, and I am not making this up, carrying a purple tophat and a pizza across the entire game. The third one at least didn't start to matter until you reached chapter 11, but the purple hat was one you began at chapter 3, and had to deal with for the remainder of the game. Need I mention that the hat was infamously glitchy in older builds, sometimes sinking into SOLID ground for no reason, vanishing from your hands while a level loaded during an elevator ride, and could just be easily lost if you didn't pay attention to where you were throwing the thing? The pizza box wasn't much better, as its larger geometry meant it could snag on things when you least expected it and in some later chapters, this could bite you in the butt because you were zipping through air currents and extremely narrow corridors that would make you drop whatever you're handling if you weren't careful.

World of Warcraft: "Insane in the Membrane", which effectively requires you to spend untold hours killing specific enemies and collecting specific items. ... So maybe you would obtain that one by accident after all.

Naw, I doubt anyone would get that by accident with the reputation requirement for the Bloodsail Buccaneers and the four factions of the goblin cartel, especially given that earning reputation with the goblins can lose you reputation with the pirates and vice versa. Unless you do it the way I did (yes, I followed a guide 😂) to end up exalted with all five groups simultaneously (this is not necessary for the achievement, I just opted for the most convoluted option because I could). To oversimplify, you have to: 1) do all the quests that can earn you rep with the goblins but lose you pirate rep (and vice versa) to get those out of the way. 2) Set yourself to “at war” with the goblins so you can attack them, then kill goblins in one particular city until you’re exalted with the buccaneers. That got me a lot of weird looks, other player characters literally stopping to watch before moving on. A couple times, someone whispered at me to ask WTF I was doing. 😂 3) Finally, go to one particular beach where maybe 20 pirates spawn and kill them over and over and over AND OVER again until you’ve clawed your goblin rep all the way back from hated to exalted. For some reason, the rest of the buccaneers don’t care about these specific pirates, so you don’t harm your rep with the group by doing this. 4) You’re now exalted with all these enemies at once and all it cost was your sanity. And that’s just two of the multiple requirements for the achievement… don’t get me started on killing murlocs for hundreds of lockboxes that you have to turn in to another faction five at a time… And as a result of all that , what do you get? A mount? Great gear? Some gold? Nope, a title - two words you can tack on to your character’s name so that everyone knows you are “X the Insane”. Fitting. 😂

Oh, wow, I'm really early. There's a lot of odd ones in Powerwash Simulator, but my vote has to go for the achievement "Mucus Ranch" in Jackbox Party Pack 6. Oh, or "Posthumous Spiritualism" in Death and Taxes!

Unpacking is my go-to comfort turn-my-brain-off game. I just finished yet another run today. I gave up making up names, so I started numbering each album. The achievement I had to look up how to get was the coffee one in the boyfriend's apartment. You have to place specific items on the counter by the sink to get it. Oh, there's also an achievement for flushing every toilet in the game.

I learned to fear or at least be weary of any environments that look safe from the Lurker Shark from Jak & Daxter which has a sound will haunt my nightmare forever & still make my race when I play the game. So when I saw those ant lions just rise up out of the sand to murder some poor dude, I made sure that I didn't so much as put a toe on that sand. Thanks, games U've made me scared to go into water or on sand in any game I will ever play

@@bustergundo516 For reasons unknown yea sadly people just hate cheats when they can literally be what makes a endgame last 10 hours or hundreds simply cause exploding punches and jetpacks are never not entertaining. Also every person who agrees that I've met is also fine not getting achievements or trophies in exchange which I think is a great way of doing it.

I accomplished the Half-Life 2 achievement before Half-Life 2 even had achievements. Which sadly means I'd have to do it all over again if I want Steam to keep a record of that accomplishment. But I was told to stay off the sand, so I did. No knowledge of an achievement required.

You'd be surprised. Put anyone who isn't super comfortable with 3D-stick movement on the controller and they're going to spend most of their time with the screen locked on the sky or the ground.

Going off of that, the one for doing the same in Nier:Replicant is way harder to get accidentally because you have to collect every weapon, complete the game and choose the "erase all data" ending to look up her skirt until she game overs you after multiple warnings

Might be an obscure game, but Hunt: Showdown has two good ones. "Trinity of Pain" and "Throw Hammer or Run" For Trinity of Pain you need to have all 3 in-game status effects at the same time, you need to be on fire, bleeding and poisoned all at once. Considering how most people's immediate reaction is to run for cover and heal themselves upon getting just one of these, getting all three is not something I see someone stumbling upon. For Throw Hammer or Run there are a few steps. First you need to equip a perk called "Tomahawk", then you need to find a sledgehammer somewhere in-game, finally you need to use Tomahawk to chuck the sledgehammer at another player and kill them with it.

There's one achievement in Weird West were you need to kick a bird while it's flying, or something along those lines. I didn't even know I could kick in the game to bigin wtih. During a random encounter against zombies I discovered I could kick. I was so entranced by the fact I had played 4 characters and only with the fifth and final character did I discovered I could kick that I started randomly kicking and accidentally hit a bird midflight popping the trophy. I was so bewildered, I paused the game and went to the Trophies just to make sure I didn't imagine it.

Honestly, take your pick from Tomb Raider I-II-III HD Remaster! There's more than a couple that deserve a spot on such a list, such as "A Land Walk" from II, or the one called "Pet This Cat" from I, not least of all cuz I was doing that second one wrong it turned out!

Don’t even get me started on Payday 2. Over 1300 achievements and you bet some of them are terrible to get and practically impossible to get by accident. Just three of the many infuriating achievements include: Danger wet floors in which you have to get across an entire bridge while escorting a prisoner (who can actually get stuck out of your range soft locking the achievement) whilst not touching the floor during a police assault involving snipers and a SWAT turret on one of the games higher difficulties. Doctor miserable which requires you to either A: incorrectly guess the right engine to steal 11 times in a row or B: Solve a puzzle to figure out which engine is incorrect, steal the other 11 incorrect engines (with like a 5 minute wait between being able to steal each engine) and putting the correct one in as the final one (and then wait another 5 or so minutes for it to be verified) all while being under police assault. Farmer miserable: DO IT AGAIN BUT WITH GOATS WHERE YOU HAVE TO INDIVIDUALLY AIRLIFT LIKE 15 GOATS ALL WHILE UNDER POLICE ASSAULT! And don’t even get me started on the stealth achievements…

Civ VI has so many hilariously specific achievements My personal favorite is “Luftballons” - Use a bomber class unit to detonate a nuclear device, as long as its base and 9 Observation Balloons are located on the continent of Nena at the time of detonation

In Starbound, there's an achievement called "Villain", which requires you to kill a friendly NPC. Very standard stuff, right? At least, until you realize that friendly NPCs in that game are immune to almost every form of damage you can dish out while still considered "friendly", so you need to get creative. There's also an achievement for collecting 10 million blocks. So uh... Better get some coffee brewing, ey?
