Went shopping with my daughter for her wedding dress and gave the boutique my budget of 3-4K with 4k being an absolute top out bc I knew there would be alterations. The consultants said that was perfect bc there wasn’t anything in the shop that was over that price range. They ended up putting her in a beautiful satin gown with 3D floral lace appliqués and detachable train. Absolute perfection on her. It was “the one”, everyone cried. I asked for a printout of the dress details so I could show my husband and that’s when they told me that dress was $5,300 before any alterations. (The dress and train were priced separately since the train was considered “optional”) With alterations it would be over 6k. I SEARCHED and found another shop that carried the exact same dress for $1k less AND the groom’s mother loved her in the dress so much and wanted her to have it, and offered to cover the amount over my budget including alterations. But yeah I was in distress for a while trying to figure out what to do bc they had put her in something that was $1,300 over my budget.

I’d say to remember to sit in your dress. Mine was painful while sitting due to the boning. I got to the venture for the reception and borrowed a steak knife I cut the bones out. I was pregnant so the top of my bump was getting sore no way was I eating in a dress I couldn’t sit in. I also didn’t have a necklace as it was transitional that husbands buy it as a wedding gift on the day no necklace. I borrowed one of my sisters but wish I’d used one of my mums. Men in Scotland rent or have kilts they can be warm as heck but they do have some ventilation which helps.

I would add that in general do in the dress everything you could possibly do on the day - sit, fall, dance, practice going to the bathroom, run etc.

@@lingodelfo5415 another tip I picked up is if your able get someone to help depin your hair it’s such a nice bonding time I was so honoured to do my niece in laws at two whilst she drank her pint of water. Plus fill out a breakfast in bed card so you’re able to eat the next morning . Plus the occasional video after the photographer leaves. Everyone at my wedding had a last dance huddle we all sang perfect day sadly I don’t have any recordings of it 1999 so but recently I found husband had completely forgotten it. Sitting in the dress was super important luckily a steak knife fixed it as I swear the meal was the best ever.

As someone who's lost 50 lb. I'd 100% say buy the dress in your current size, and then have it tailored if you do loose weight... I didn't loose weight at the same rate in all my body parts. Plus, I had to lose a lot before I really needed to go down a size, or before anyone noticed I'd lost some weight... If you're super determined, then get a dress that can be easily altered to fit beautifully in all the right places. Or, perhaps, loose some weight before buying the dress? You might like yourself in a different style dress at a different weight.

This is fantastic advice, as someone who has lost ~70lbs. I got my dress and it fit like it was made for me, lost like 20 more lbs, and the only additional change I needed to make was a little alteration in the bust.

It has been 26 years, but when we got married, we had planned for a June wedding. However, my husband was in the military and was getting deployed, so we had to move our wedding to December. Thank goodness I found my dress a couple of weeks after our engagement. My aunts worked miracles to give us the wedding we had dreamed of. He had to wear his dress uniform because we had no time for him to get a suit, and my dress only needed to be cut since I was 5” exactly. But I cannot imagine running out of time. My sisters learned from our experience that they had everything clothes-wise done at least eight weeks before their dates.

Wedding shoe video please! :) Also, I agree on dress sizes. I was glad to know in advance because I'm usually a size 2, but chose a fitted dress and they recommended a size ten to fit my hips, but that will mean taking the top and waist down like 4-8 sizes! The alterations are stressing me out, but it's true that it's better to size up than risk tearing your dress on your wedding day!

Idk my fiancé got his generation tux suit and we were disappointed. We bought the suit, did not even rent, and the suit had snags in multiple places and buttons loose too. Idk maybe we’ll like the suit better after tailoring, but he was so disappointed. He was also anxious because he thought he wouldn’t look as nice as he wanted on his wedding day. So idk I’d be weary of generation tux based on our experience just recently.

@@AK-jt9gxthat does seem expensive. I had a lot of alterations done on my dress since it was a ball gown with a lot of beading everywhere. And I think I spent $600. My dress on its own cost $2000 at a small business with the most kindest people ever.

A friend of mine recently got married, beautiful, beautiful event, but the groomsmen were in 3 piece suits and the bridesmaids in full length, black dresses. It was a 110 degrees, and they did their portraits outside. One of the groomsmen literally showed up to the reception shaking with almost heatstroke. Middle of July is a gamble. I wouldn't do it. I'm not getting married anytime soon but... May-August is basically blacklisted. I can't deal with heat.

My seamstress had my dress from February 3rd thru August 7th. All it needed was a one layer hem on simple fabric, bustle and straps tightened. My initial estimate was it would be done in May. I called a few times and she said it wasn't ready she'd call back. Finally made an appt for second fitting, she cancelled it stating "she wasn't prepared". Finally got it back, the dress is beautiful but I was HEAVILY stressed out thinking they had messed it up somehow. My wedding is September 1st, I was taking it home either way the day I picked it up!

That's crazy! I made the mistake of sending mine to the dry cleaners about a week before the wedding, we told them when the wedding was and were assured many times that it would be ready in plenty of time and they would call as soon as it was. Wedding was on a Friday, we called on Wednesday, it wasn't ready, called on Thursday, still wasn't ready, and the lady on the phone was acting all annoyed that we called, and said "I told you it'll be ready by Saturday! " told her (again) that the wedding was the day before that and she was like "Oh, well who plans a wedding on a friday?!" 😑 She still seemed to think we were making a big deal out of nothing, and it was BARELY ready in time on friday. Whoever picked it up (I honestly don't know who went and got it lol) rushed it to the church and arrived with it half an hour before the ceremony started! My sil was heading to Walmart to find me something white to wear when we were informed that it was ready

@@caitlinhanson8631 Oh my goodness! I can't believe all these businesses who make promises of time and then are mad at us, the customers, when they can't live up to those expectations! I'm glad it all worked out for you! I forgot to say that the seamstress I used was extremely put out by the fact that I didn't leave her a tip. You can't give mediocre service, be a jerk to my friend, who went with me, have my dress for six months and expect a tip. Sorry, not sorry.

I have never understood why wedding gown sizes run small compared to street cloths. I have always though it would make way more sense to have them run larger. I think most people would love to go try on a wedding gown and find out they need a size 10 when normally they wear a size 12.
@kortenmary

I imagine it's to account for a larger variety of people. A lot of stores have different sizing bc they cater to different customers ranging in age or size. I was already a size 0 in bridesmaid dress, and a 6 in wedding dress. There are definitely people smaller than me, I'm not that tiny. It does start to get a little silly to use 0, 00, 0000 for the smaller end of dresses.

We got our suits from generation tux and my husband got his rental free. Our only issue was we did the at home try on and everything was perfect. When the suit for the wedding came, what they sent wasn’t fitting correctly. So we had to trade it in. But why do a trial if you aren’t going to send the same sizes for the actual wedding?

I’m so glad I finally got around to watching this video! I’ve been engaged for about a month, but I’ve just been busy since I’m finishing up Graduate school, working full time, and I’m just now peeking into the reality of getting married next year. I’ll start actively planning after my course work is done for this year.

Men, please - try it on! We had a groomsman whose pants were 3 sizes too small when he put them on on our wedding day. We only had a 5-month engagement so there’s no way he had gained that much weight in so short a time - he definitely just bought the wrong size. Ended up at Walmart in the middle of nowhere, buying pants day-of - which could have been avoided if he’d tried them on from the beginning!

Slightly unrelated, but Do you have any videos with guidance for initial meetings or advice for navigating conversations with the officiant? Especially how it differs going with someone you know personally, who might not have as much experience versus someone who’s very experience as an officiant, but you have no relationship with. TYIA!

Only thing i dont like about generations tux is that you can not do an outfit without the suite jacket it has to come with it. The look i was going for was going for involved not suite jacket and just the shirt pants and suspenders and bow tie. :(

Do you have any recommendations for dress brands that are kind and inclusive to plus size brides? I am legit sick to my stomach thinking about going to try on dresses. Thankfully not getting married until spring 2025 so I have time before I actually need to stress about it. But it honestly is my biggest anxiety about the wedding. I love wearing dresses and I want that experience that smaller sized people have while dress shopping. Idk. I know I can order online and try to do up the dress correctly on my own but it won't be the same.

I like Azazie, they're an online store that sells wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, and other formal dresses. My cousin had us get our bridesmaid dresses from there and they looked amazing on everyone even though we had different body shapes and sizes in the bridal group. Their sizes go up to 30 and when I got my dress I actually ended up needing to go one size smaller than I usually wear. They also will let you pay to have a dress sent for you to try on, so you can make sure that you're going to get something you look and feel good in without having to worry about taking a gamble on a dress you've never seen in person. We're not officially engaged yet but our hoping to get married late 2025 and I just happened to find a dress on Azazie that I LOVED so I ordered a try-on sample and can't wait for it to arrive. I'll try to remember to come back with feedback after I got to try it on!

My sister’s wedding one of the bm ordered too small and I had to wear her dress with lots of alterations. My brother’s wedding no one took in to account I was becoming a lady and my dress crushed my top I felt like I was in a binder. Big tip make sure the bridesmaids can breathe and move normally this is extra important for Catholic weddings where it’s stand sit kneel sit stand etc. later there was a ceilidh I couldn’t breathe and was being flung around. I love the idea of cutting the bridesmaids dresses shorter for the evening ceilidhs are like a marathon. Another tip. Before going to bed have someone help take down your hair especially if drunk, there are so many Bobby pins getting them done while sitting with your guests helps. Also if you are dressing in one place then sleeping in another bring a going away outfit. If you’re going to breakfast you don’t want to still be in your dress. Also if you don’t fancy getting up order your breakfast to your room. The card says fill in by midnight but often asking they will get you a card to fill out while you’re chatting with friends. Just think what am I wearing out of here. My flower girl daughter left her outfit at the brides house so went home in my top as a dress and my cropped leggings as trousers. Brides don’t buy the flower girl shoes for her if you live indifferent city’s give mum a brief and let her get ones that fit. My daughter walked down aisle I my sisters sandals thankfully no perfectionists to break down. I almost had a match outfit with a sibling to others sibs wedding she was determined if they were the same I’d be the one changing. I was not keen breastfeeding conditions had been made in my dress. Luckily, even though they were the same dress, hers was grey black and white, mine, white black, gray and white.
