Went to ATC Operation Raincheck at Center, got my Instrument at 17 before graduating HS. It was natural because I learned it from the beginning. Was never intimidated by big airports or complex operations. Flew with a few folks who were, because they "grew up in the sticks". Granted, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH FLYING FROM THE POSTAGE STAMP (done it) OR THE PASTURE (ref. Gordon Baxter) but to start this way is to never look at the hill as if it were a mountain. Confidence early, Ruth is on track. Edit, since I was ruminating about it...get Bax Seat by Gordon Baxter and be reminded about this while reading about his experiences getting his Instrument rating. As a CFII I took my 4 y/o daughter up in a C-172, and had her perform some simple maneuvers in a practice area. When we were done, I asked her if she could find the airport. Now this was over a large urban area, so finding the airport wasn't obvious. To my complete surprise, within a few seconds she said "there it is over there", pointing to the airport. Now I have done the same thing with adults who struggled to visually find the airport. I asked how did she find it so fast. Her response, "you see that big jet over there (a FedEx MD-11 on final approach)? I figured it was landing, so I just looked ahead of it, and there is the airport." Take home message, do not underestimate the critical thinking, and logical reasoning skills of 4 y/o girls.

As long as the extra few seconds in the readback aren't interfering with airspace, it should be fine. The most important thing is for the parent (I assume?) flying with her to be listening very carefully to what she says to make sure everything is correct. By the sounds of it, the parent is telling her what to say, which means they are listening to frequency normally. If something goes wrong or if the frequency were busy, I would expect the parent to jump in and do their own radio calls, but that's not the case here. I would also think that this kind of thing happened way more years ago, and only slowed down when we hawks were judging everyone on the internet

@giorginho7mobile Жыл бұрын
You can actually hear him feeding the readback to her step by step (the exact steps you're hearing then coming from her) but what's also quite amazing here is he basically starts with the next "step" as she's finishing the previous one to minimize delay between the steps in her readback (which indeed is minimal) and she still gets everything, that's a high degree of concentration and multi-tasking, which if she's really just 6yo is amazing! Also: I remember my parents telling me that basically since the first time I spoke and up until I was a certain age (like 12 or something) I'd speak extraordinarily clearly! Not sure what followed, call it puberty, perhaps boredom, whatever, but now I also at times just mumble stuff out without even noticing how bad it can be. I'm no pilot or controller, but I think people should pay more attention to speaking clearly, I only notice now when I'm in a conversation with someone who does speak very clearly 😳

It's adorable, not dangerous. It slightly increases risk of miscommunication now, but reduces overall risk by keeping things interesting (for all on frequency), and may make for a better future pilot. Obviously, it depends on on things like wx, traffic, and the child's behaviour. She did great.

If that has been one of those "saddest pilots last words" clips, I just would have gone and jumped off a building. So cute, best ATC clip this year. Can just picture her with this giant headset on her head.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected! She’s fantastic. Regarding safety: it is abundantly clear that the pic is 100% on top of things, absolutely zero doubt that he/she is completely aware of atc comms and that the kid is getting word by word what to say. Maybe even safer than many other flights where pilots are complacent - in this situation there is definitely no complacency.
@JSmith777 Жыл бұрын
so.. you are saying it is safer that the pilot is "distracted" when he's coming in for the approach? Think of yourself in a F1 racecar.. is it safer to concentrate on driving while talking on the phone?

@philbirk Жыл бұрын
@@kaasmeester5903 They have a bunch of videos. I think the DFW approach controllers and the Addison local controllers are used to her by now. They seem to go to Longview a lot too. Those guys don't even hesitate when she calls, it seems normal to them. You can hear some of the controllers chuckle but most act like it's just a normal day talking to RuthlessAviatorGirl.

@theonlywoody2shoes Жыл бұрын
I’m a mere PPL, but the first thing I did with my boys once they were old enough to reach the controls was to ensure they knew how to land and how to use the radio. Thankfully I’ve never needed them to do so, but in an emergency knowing they had the ability to save themselves (and me, if I was the emergency) is comforting.

He would have probably taken note and said something like, “you’re more intelligible than these tugs down here. Good job!”

I would say not really dangerous because there wasn't much in the way of traffic. She did a great job, repeating what (her dad?) was telling her, and didn't even stutter over her words. That's pretty impressive for a 6 year old. As long as he wasn't letting her fly (yet). That would be dangerous (to me).

I dont see why it would be dangerous for her to fly under supervisoon for short times. I was exposed to driving this way when I was maybe 5, by helping shift gears in my dad's truck, or holding the wheel. Dad can take care of the rudder pedals and keep a guard hand on/near the yoke. From other comments here it seems he's a CFI, but it wouldn't be illegal either way AFAIK.
@Noledad77 Жыл бұрын
@tissuepaper9962 maybe only if there was more traffic, it could be dangerous. In this case, "dangerous" is kind of a broad term. I agree, he's probably a CFI, but there's not really a comparison between speaking on FAA comes in a jet with driving a farm truck or out on a dirt road somewhere. I get what you're saying, but I just don't see them as comparable. I hope she keeps at it and gets to fly eventually.
@tissuepaper9962 Жыл бұрын
@@Noledad77 nobody said "dirt road", lol, this happened in town too. i had friends who were driving the truck themselves to town and back, pedals and all, at 11. this was not that long ago, I'm early Gen Z. your "official FAA comms" are the aviation equivalent of a turn signal, and she was clearly being coached carefully, so I don't really understand why you think flying is something inherently different from operating any other vehicle. don't get a big head.
