I have sat down and talked with Bruce four times before. Starting from when he was just comtemplating moving to Thailand all the way through him moving here permanently to retire. That was 6 years ago! Great video JC and it was really good to see Bruce again and that he's doing well. It was sad thou to hear about his motorcycle accident but those things happen if you ride. I've been down a few times. But, not since the last one as I parked the bike and haven't been on it since. I really do hope he makes it to Cha Am if only to look around for a few days. Really nice discussion Bruce. I'm seriously looking at retiring to Thailand myself in the next couple of years and your channel is very informative. Thank you for that. The owners of a Thai restaurant where I live in Iowa are from Bangkok and I've been getting recommendations from them as well. They are big city people and do not care for the remote areas of Thailand for living. They do recommend Hua Hin as a smaller city but still close to all the benefits a place like Bangkok. I'm looking forward to learning more from your site. Keep up the good work. Your videos have improved tremendously and I happen to enjoy your very down to earth style of interviewing.

I'm not sure I'd recommend the insurance agency that he used. There was some challenges that made him lay in bed for four or five days without any medical treatment due to a lack of response by his insurance company. I actually compare many major medical insurance policies in Thailand on my member site and discuss why I chose the one that I did. It might be useful information for you. I get US$250,000 worth of coverage for only $149 a month.

Bruce: My wife and I spent 1 month in Hua Hin and one of my favorite aspects of Hua Hin was walking on the beach. We did it on almost a daily basis and it never got old. A very walkable beach and the locals do a fantastic job of keeping it clean. A couple of malls, a nice night market, good hospital and medical facilities, a waterfront, and generally good ambience. There are also a number of very kind and helpful ex-pats there. The downside is the heat; but, I don't think you would regret a move there.

One thing I must say to retirees of all backgrounds is that please stay active even if you have nothing to do. I've worked with many elderly as a caregiver when I was younger and I have learned a great deal about them and how their lifestyle affected their situations at their given age. Many of them were inactive and just sat around and did not watch what they eat. It really shows in their physical mobility and overall health and many went away before their time...too young to to die. It's a harsh reality for many but yours don't have to be. You made it this far. Live well. You deserve it.

I agree... my wife keeps complaining that I work too much. All I do is some 4 hours per day in the garden - mostly in the morning, often starting between 6 and 7 am. And I have some online "business" - not real business, but trying to make some extra money. But for the next 3 to 4 years I have enough projects in my garden. Never thought I would be such a garden person. But then again, it runs in my mother's family... nearly all men worked in their gardens, growing vegetables and so on.. I haven't started with that yet, but it is one of the projects...

Great video and fantastic timing for me. I've been undecided about with to stay in Chiang Mai or go to Chiang Rai. Decided to stick with CM, but move 10-15 km out of the centre and this video has made me feel better about that decision. I'd love to find the Thailand I first encountered 27 years ago, but guess I need to accept it's gone. Like Bruce, I did the Smiths driver training and only wish the Thai lunatic drivers would do the same. Having worked as a professional driver in London for over 20 years it's hard to accept a lot of the idiocy I see on the roads here.

Tell Bruce I am happy to help him find anything in Hua Hin. I know several great beach walks and temple hikes, plus I bike ride from one end to the other. Oh, and the International Group Trash Heroes meets every Sunday at 1600 to walk and clean the beach. We have anywhere from 10 to 30 volunteers each outing. Great video.

Actually everybody has different needs when it comes to medical insurance. In my member site I did a whole posting comparing different policies and the benefits and costs. And I explained why I chose the one that I did. I get US$250,000 worth of coverage for only hundred and $49 a month.

Not sure about visa costs at that age, but assuming a tourist visa, every 3 months of visa and travel and other country visa depending on where you go is roughly 5000-6000 baht, divided by 3 is 1650-2000 a month Rent in CM, I had a nice 2.5? star hotel (swimming pool only amenity but it was near CMU and Huay Kaew) so in a convenient location) for 8500 a month, I know decent apartments are 3500-5500 depending on where you want to stay, but all within 1 km of the moat/Nimman. So lets go with that assuming you stay long term. I recommend getting a motorcycle for long term savings, or if you are in good health, a bicycle is great. Get a good one to last forever for around $600. Then you will have low monthly transport costs for out of the way places. I personally get both. Lets assume transport costs daily use are roughly 600 a month. Phone, I got effectively unlimited data and didnt call or text much for 400 baht a month. food, I had a great half portion place in the center of CM, 20-25 baht for a large menu and good cook. But I found some good restaurants all around, prices still average 35-45 baht average, plus you can cook at home (I will put foreign food on entertainment expense) So average day food costs (my budget is 150 baht) will total roughly 4500 a month That covers all basic expenses I believe with good food, a decent apartment (clean and in good condition with room service), etc... Total a month = 12,000 baht a month. Now where the expense goes is in the entertainment. Even if you want a really good place or a house, add only 2000 baht and you are still under $500 for basic expenses. So for entertainment, you decide yourself, but you can usually eat out international for roughly 200-300 a meal with a drink. How much beer you drink will determine this the most, but buying beer from the grocery store and hanging out saves a lot if you have friends. Drink a little before you go to the bar to get the best of both worlds and save a lot. But I enjoy going to happy hour and just staying over to have 1 more full price beer after that ends to enjoy the full night. My average monthly bills are $600. I admit, I plan to go back with more money and I likely will budget $800 a month, but since I dont drink or eat foreign food a lot, thats going to be great living for me. I may drink and eat out only once or twice a week, no prostitution, one massage a week etc... lol

Since the Chinese business owners have taken over, I've seen how the Thai people's friendliness has dwindled, due to the emphasis put on them by owners, focusing on wealth creation, and not the experience for tourists

Thanks for the reply, JC. I think I found a Columbia "Bonehead" style. Wonder who named that shirt ? FYI, my favorite Thai travel shirt was from J Peterman, "The Peterman Shirt". Something about the fabric that is thin but tough and so the sweat just evaporates very quickly and the shirt is almost weightless. Mine have lasted ten years. $ 50, but sometimes they are half off if you get their promo emails. Only get the natural color - other colors are a heavier, different fabric.

There's always an option! And a lot of the options depend on a number of different criteria which is way too boring and detail oriented to make videos about on KZbin. They wouldn't be very entertaining but that's why all that kind of information is in the member site is it's very important to a RIPper (retiree in paradise) thinking about coming over and living in Thailand.

I was just wondering how he managed while being in such bad accidents. Who was around to help him while hospitalized and at home recuperating. I didn't catch if he had a wife or girlfriend. Seems like he would've needed someone to take care of him with day to day needs. Maybe he had xpat friends who helped him I was just very curious about that.

Riding a motorbike in Thailand requires vigilance. If you don't pay attention you will either be dead or permanently injured. If you have no experience riding a motorbike learn where their are few obstacles. Chiang Mai is a circus with many intoxicated drivers. Police do their job well and will ticket you for not obeying the law. Take a trip to RAM hospital anytime and you can observe motorbike injuries constantly, mostly inexperienced foreigners.

I visit Chiang Mai every 60 days or so . Yes , the central part of CM is busy with traffic and bustle . But if you want a quiet stay , then just get a place out around Hang Dong , only 15 minutes or so south of CM . You can stay in quiet little places if you want . And still chug aong to the supermarkets or movies when you want to . And , living in China as I do , I am happy to see the good natured Chinese people having fun in Chiang Mai . Much better than uptight Western people .

About two years ago, I lived for a while on less than 15,000 baht a month (less than US$450 now) because I was saving the rest of my salary for a big purchase. I was never hungry or in want and always happy. It's definitely possible. Having an open mind and speaking/reading a little Thai, or knowing someone that can, makes it a lot easier.

I can't speak about "his" particular situation, but If you open a bank account in just about any country in the world, with a couple of exceptions like North Korea, you can have your Social Security payment direct-deposited to your account.

Direct deposit to your bank and then bank transfer to your Thai bank. Or use Bangkok Bank. They have a branch in New York. Have the direct deposit go there (BKK Bank, NY Branch) and the money will be accessible in Thailand the next day. This is not new either. It has been available for years.

It's common to have payments deposited to your bank your home country and then do a wire transfer (electronic funds transfer) to your Thai bank account periodically.

There's no need to have money transferred into a Thai account, besides having the required minimum amount for a Type-O visa. You can pull money out of your home account at any ATM, although fees and exchange rates vary. Currently, the best way to get money from an overseas account is to go to Bangkok Bank and use your ATM/debit card for a credit card cash advance... great exchange rate and no fee.

Ron just for your information and for the people who read your post, no tie bank has any ATM fees or monthly fees for the accounts. The only time you will be charged an ATM fee is when you use the corresponding banks ATM/debit card outside of the district of your branch that you opened your account in. In that case you will be charged a fee for using the ATM. This also applies to Bangkok bank.

Agreed Sam, and I used to race Motocross. I rent a bike in Samui every few years and it's dangerous. I will NOT ride in Bangkok. Chiang Mai can be bad but was safer when I was there. If they didn't kick us out every few months, I'd settle there and buy a car.

That's pretty much known by everybody at this point. And there are many people that will have a very limited monthly income but have accumulated enough assets over their lifetime that they could divest themselves of that would give him this money that they can deposit into a bank account in Thailand and never have to worry again.

For a Retirement Visa you need to show 800,000 Thai baht deposited in a Thai bank for three months (each year) OR show a monthly income from your home country of 65,000 baht.

If you live a place, you need a proper health insurance. When you travel, you need a travel insurance.

If you aren't living full time in Thailand then travel insurance is a great option. If living here full time then I suggest getting Major Medical from a good Thai company. It's very affordable.

I get US$250,000 worth of coverage for only $149 a month. The amount of information covered is way too detailed for a KZbin comment and way too dry for KZbin video.

I'm not sure I'd recommend the insurance agency that he used. There was some challenges that made him lay in bed for four or five days without any medical treatment due to a lack of response by his insurance company. That's why western men come here, by the time a man in the West is 55 or over (maybe under) they are basically "done" unless they have a lot of money, or good looks, like myself...(lol) The only women you have to look forward to being with is another overweight granny, of course they're not all grannies or overweight, but a cross-section wouldn't be anything to wiggle your toes at... so what's a boy to do? After they're done paying for a young lady in Thailand, if they have money, they keep paying, unless looking for love, which is fairly available, and also come as a package deal with a few kids included in the deal, not a deal breaker as most young Thai kids are very respectful, it also gives you a daily challenge getting them into the Western frame of mind. The best thing is to find something to do, to make money, meet people, which brings you to a nice network of community. Riding motorcycles throughout Thailand is a real plus... There's more to talk about. The best thing is to experience the life here, I did that, for 4 months, met a lovely Thai woman who is now my wife of 9 years. Not your usual happy ending, sadly many Westerners find love in all the wrong places, and as they say, a Fool and his money are soon departed.
