General Thimaiayya had the foresight to understand that the domestic politics of Indian democracy will be no match for the Chinese autocracy, hence his idea of dealing the Chinese through negotiations still hold valid as of today

General K. S. Thimayya was an experienced, successful, combat officer in WW2. Like him in his day, the best of them become very protective of their lower ranks who are trying their best and often dying horrible deaths for a hundred different reasons no one stuck at the front can get corrected. When they finally close in on the source of their difficulties, they seldom mince words.

The truth is that after the coup in Pakistan, Indian politicians were scared that the Army in India may do a similar thing as all the Generals of both armies were actually comrades before partition. Hence the systematic degradation of the Indian Army by the politicians. Please remember that against all odds the Indian Army has remained the last bastion of the country and has not failed its people. Please talk about the soldiers who fought to the last bullet and man.

I know Krishna Menon played his role in lobbying with the British left during the war years and may have influenced Clement Atlee and his Labour Party, but as defence minister it was the pits. I wholeheartedly would welcome changing the name of Krishna Menon marg. As an army officer's daughter, just the thought of this man as India's defence minister is revolting. I am surprised to know that Gen. Thimayya was confiding in the British High Commissioner in Delhi, but for most parts, I am grown up with tremendous admiration for the man. BN Kaul and PN Thapar be damned.

With people of weak character and low confidence who were in awe of the Britishers and looked down upon the less anglicized Indians, it was obvious that BN Kauls would be given credence over a Gen Thimayya or Thorat. Poor quality political leadership lead to poor quality Generals who realised that the way to ascend to next level is through politicking and back biting. Clearly that’s what the generals started to do resulting in a deadly combination for India - v poor political generals, a third rate Def Minister Krishna Menon and a poor quality sychophant PM

You have made many stories about Thimayya based on inputs from a Congress leader fromSouth. Thimmaya became a chief because of his outstanding performance in 1948 against PAK specially in Zozilla , and later in Korea. And Nehru was very impressed by him. Kaul was Guilty man No 1, Krishna Menon No 2 and Nehru No3. Indian army ( officer cadre) wasn’t very professional at that time and very inadequately equipped. Nehru was very generous towards Chinese and a very big buffoon who created all kinds of mess. 1. 1950 India recognized the PRC. 2. 1951 China & Russia excluded, so India didn't sign Japan peace treaty. Citing China and Russia are not signing. 3. 1954 Sino-Indian treaty broke China's Korean War isolation. India declares a friendship treaty with China. 4. Treaty renounced Indian claims to Tibet. 5.On top of it Nehru recognised China's sovereignty over Tibet under International law. Once you recognised someones sovereignty under International law it can't be undone.

Nehru though that the country didn't need an Army. Please research the systematic degradation of the Indian Army starting from the early 50s. Ordinance factories started manufacturing cutlery. The Indian Army which was one of the best in the world just after Independence was slowly reduced to nothingness. Our diplomacy was pathetic and our politicians couldn't put their money where their mouth was. The deplorable conditions in which our men fought is unprecedented. In a democracy, the Political class has to state the intent, facilitate the Military and they will do their task.

Thank you for a most interesting story about our motherland’s history. I couldn’t help but draw analogy with the startup world.. when everyone is just driving various functions of the business in their own manner. There’s chaos, personnel choices are driven largely by the personality/proximity/like ability of the founder(s). And those personnel bring in their own style of processes, rules (or lack thereof) till such a time the startup matures sufficiently. Until that maturity is achieved, the mission/vision document (constitution, in case of the country and government) is simply a cosmetic document although put together with greatest passion and sacredness. I’m glad we’re in the highly evolved phase of our country now and can reflect and critique and learn from the past… hopefully good lessons will come out of the past! 🇮🇳 🌎

If Thimayya indeed said Indian Army cannot protect India from China then he is not only the worst chief of Army but also the most incompetent. The British left behind a massive Army which was primarily used to subjugate the natives and fight colonial wars. In 2nd world war, British India Army was the largest all volunteer Army. The Chinese didn't have an effective airforce in 1962 and the infrastructure to supply troops over the vast inhospitable Tibetan plateau were rudimentary at best. China could never win any long drawn battle with India purely for geographical reason. This is true even today with massive Chinese infrastructure across LAC.

Yes Indian army was strong however the logistical problems caused by changing equipment precurement from britain to soviets done by Krishna Menon had reduced our air power by a lot then there's also the fact that Menon had also caused havoc in the officer corps through his political appointment we won't be fighting at the seas. In 1962 chinese economy was almost equal to us but where we were spending less than >2% of our gdp on the military the chinese were spending upwards of 10% and Nehru Menon were not going to let the military fight by themselves not to mention unlike China we had to worry about pakistan we would essentially have the north east completely cut off and lose kashmir as well as parts of punjab. Of course in reality Pakistan never invaded but you still have to account for these things.

Can we have an MOD filled with those not in Uniform, without doubtful knowledge on National security issues? Just asking. Security of a Nation against external threats has to be handled by a combination of diplomats, bureaucrats, Defence persons in service et al. working in unison as a team. MOD is that team. Mr Gupta, this episode confirmed to me a long held suspicion I had about the High Command of the Indian Forces; imagine a General moonlighting for a newspaper, another sharing classified information with a British diplomat, a third bad mouthing his colleague, you name it, the perfidy of these individuals is mind boggling. That was in the 1960s, has it changed? I do not think so, the individuals at the helm of the Forces give me the impression of being careerists first and foremost and soldiers somewhere down the line. Otherwise, how can one explain a General suing the Government because of a dispute about his retirement age ? Or imagine my consternation when I was visiting India a few years ago and a school friend of mine telling me that two young men from the North of India had come to his shop asking for a job as watchmen; he did not have one, but, seeing they were really fit, asked them why did they not join the Forces. With a wry smile they said - Sahib, it takes a baksheesh to get accepted (they mentioned the equivalent of over a year's salary, an amount I forget now)!. I could not believe it. Imagine the impact of this on the morale! of the Jawans! If this is the prevailing culture, it certainly does not stop there rather, it is reflective of a profound malaise that is gnawing at the entrails of the organization at multiple levels ; and that clubby culture you mention, it is well and truly very much alive, i venture. It pains me to say this. I hear - Oh, now we are better equipped, etc, etc! It is a fallacy Morale MUST come first, materiel ,training and the rest, follows. Thank You.

You need to follow the money and the politics. Krishna Menon wasn't far left, he was a communist, with MI5 labelling him a serious menace to (British) security. You might also mention that he was directly involved in the first major corruption case in the newly formed Republic of India over the procurement of army Jeeps (follow the money, follow the politics). The senior ranks of the Indian army and air force were also almost entirely corrupt through arms and equipment procurements. Do you know why India shifted to Soviet arms and equipment? It's because the Russians were just as corrupt. Witness Russia's humiliation in Ukraine; nothing changes. Any idea why the families of all those generals and air marshals are so fabulously wealthy when they were paid an absolute pittance in their salary? How come the Nehru family is so wealthy? It's not easy to focus on winning wars when your main interest is making money.

Krishna Menon’s history before he came to India, his meeting with Nehru during Nehru’s 1927 trip to Europe is pretty dubious as well and for a large part responsible for the China fiasco later on.Gen.Thapar’s appointment as chief is also part of the corruption that was going on.What a mess by Nehru and company. This is what happened when a rabid ideology like Krishna Menon’s communism and hence blind China alignment found a narrow minded, egoistical and dependent leader in Nehru to railroad a military operation we could have won.And at the cost of our soldiers lives and sovereignty of the country.I mean they died because they ran out of ammunition!!!! Nehru's strategic decision to foster friendly relations with China in the 1950s was undoubtedly wise, given the geopolitical complexities of the era. Aligning with the Western Bloc could have risked confrontation, especially with the backdrop of the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship in 1950. Nehru's foresight in believing that China would not attack India was rooted in the understanding that a conflict could escalate into a global confrontation, considering the ongoing Taiwan Strait Crisis and the potential intervention of major powers like the USA. However, the tragic events of 1962 revealed a miscalculation on Nehru's part regarding China's response to India's forward policy. The attack by China exploited the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the superpowers were cautious about interfering in regional conflicts. While Nehru's vision for diplomatic engagement with China was sound, the failure to anticipate Chinese aggression and the delayed modernization of India's military with potential Western support were critical missteps.

@@Aashutosh_Payaal28Nehru was not particularly wise about taking the right advice from the right experts. It is known that he preferred to surround himself with yes men who would stoke his ego and then get their way through him. Another example being Sheikh Abdullah and the Kashmir/UN fiasco. And the pathetic handling of the military once the China war started, like firing existing officials and then appointing unqualified generals like Thapar. The Chinese threat was not lost on other leaders, including those within the Congress. There is a very poignant letter that sardar Patel wrote to Nehru about the China problem right before his death which Nehru completely ignored. As did other leaders like Savarkar who he personally did not like. Nehru was under the influence of communism from a very early time and only settled for socialism in India because the other would not have worked. Aligning with the West became an impossibility much later. Immediately after independence It was India that refused her UN security council seat which Nehru deferred to China. A colossal mistake if there ever was one. Also the Sino Russian pact would not have made much difference because we did ultimately align with Russia after the Chinese war. If the pact was of any consequence India should not have allowed Russia to mess with its politics either. The problem was not the politics but Nehru's personal belief in communism which led him to not consider any other option.

@@RG-un2vlSardar Patel's letter suggested That India should align with the Western powers and break ties with China. Let us examine What would have happened then 1.) China would have been alienated and would likely have launched a pre emptive attack on India. 2.) USA, of course would have supported India in this situation. 3.) But USSR would have supported China due to 1950 treaty between them 4.) India would have been forced into a extremely prolonged and destructive war in 1950 (just when India became a republic) So supporting tibet in this situation would have been disastrous. Instead India sought to abandon it's support for tibet in exchange for Chinese acceptance of McMohan Line. And as it turns out, China actually accepted McMohan Line. It had all to do with Aksai Chin through which China began constructing a road to connect Xinjiang with Yarkand. If you read letters between Nehru and Zhou from 1958-1960 you would realise that Zhou was willing to accept McMohan line if India would not protest against Chinese control over Aksai Chin. But Nehru rejected this offer when Zhou came to meet in March 1960. The mistake which Nehru made was misjudgment of Chinese reaction to forward policy. China was dealing with Taiwan strait crisis in late 1950s. Nehru felt that China would not react aggressively to forward policy as it is more concerned with Taiwan crisis. So the forward policy was ill equipped. China and USSR fell out in early 1960s. Meanwhile from 16-28 October 1962 there was Cuban Missile Crisis. With America already facing a huge danger to its national security, China felt that this was the right opportunity to launch an invasion. Think about it... Why didn't China attack India in 1959, 1960 or 1961? Because it had fallen out with USSR and USA would have help India in case China launched an invasion. So China was at backfoot during this entire time and that's why offered diplomatic negotiations. But at the right opportunity, it striked India, for which India was not prepared for. Due to these circumstances in 1950s, Nehru felt that prospect of Chinese invasion is not likely. How could he have predicted a cuban Missile crisis of 1962? There was no question of India ever getting a UNSC permanent seat. It was a feeler given by US to India to replace China (already a member) with India. It would require an amendment to charter of UN. USSR would have vetoed it. So it would have had no consequence except alienation of China and USSR and prospect of Chinese invasion in early 1950s. Also your saying that Nehru was communist is a laughter material. In fact his government executed a heavy crackdown on Communist Attempt to overthrow Indian state in 1948. Several communists had to go to jail and even pro communist magazine Cross Roads was censored. Not only that, even Socialist parties like PSP and KMPP opposed several of Nehru's policies. Nehru had fascination for China because of historical friendship between two nations and their rich culture. He thought of Asian dominance period which would rival that of Anglo American. That being said, his policy of friendship towards Chinese was a better alternative than alignment with USA in early 1950s. PS : Nehru did not like to surround himself with yes-men. In fact, he had advisors like Homi Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, PC Mahalanobis, G Parathasarathi etc due to which have institutions that we can pride ourselves in.

@@RG-un2vl Things would have happened exactly the same way as I said. Alignment with the USA in early 1950s would have triggered a prolonged war which would have been much more disastrous than 1962 war. China just used Cuban Missile crisis opportunity to attack India. Since US was busy in getting soviet nuclear war heads removed from Cuba. As for UNSC seat, India was never formally offered one. It was a feeler, a bait by US to lure India into its camp. USSR would have vetoed the proposal anyway. Sino Soviet relations worsened in early 1960s due difference over marxism leninism. Before that their relations were cordial and USSR would have definitely supported China especially when India would have sought to befriend USA. Nehru made stratetic miscalculation in determining what would be Chinese reaction to forward policy. He felt that China, busy in dealing with Taiwan strait crisis, would not take any action across himalayas. Hence forward policy was ill equipped. China would not have launched an invasion of India in October 1962 had US not been busy in Cuban Missile crisis. Think about it : Why China did not attack from 1958-1962? They were just waiting for US to get busy in some other regional dispute.

Shekhar Gupta represents exactly the North Indian Hindi-centrism and condescension toward the much greater cultures of the rest of India that contradict everything that is good about India, that makes the concept of India so very difficult for non-Hindi speaking people (like us) of Northeastern, Eastern, Western, Northwestern, or Southern India, that makes non-Hindi speaking people argue that the Hindi Belt is keeping India down and should secede from India. In addition to Mr. Gupta's terrible English enunciation (he is really speaking Hindi), he does not even have the respect to attempt to pronounce non-Hindi names properly; for example, "Chaudhuri" (as in General Jayanto Nath Chaudhuri) or "Chowdhury" in Assamese or Bengali has the distinct "u" vowel between the consonants "dh" and "r," "Rahman" (as in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) has the distinct vowel "o" between the consonants "h" and "m," and Bangladesh is pronounced "Baanglaadesh" (with both extended "aa" vowels, soft consonants, and silent "g"), not the grotesquely ugly "Banggglaadesh" that this uneducated Hindi-centric person keeps saying. Mr. Gupta's ignorant and disrespectful attitude is the totally unjustified arrogance that made East Pakistan secede from West Pakistan. Here is an example instead of a nuanced, thoughtful, and respectful discussion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHjanYxmqZVoick. Mr. Gupta is a national embarrassment, especially for us highly educated Indian-Americans.
