Impressive. Once I get my current clears out of the way I need to put some serious time into TD2, such an underrated gem.

Thanks, TD2 is a great game indeed even when playing for survival, the scoring system may be a bit too simplistic for modern players but it's fun enough to optimize and pushing it further.

I think the Dangun Feveron-esque system of destroying waves efficiently to spawn the next wave more quickly is actually pretty cool. I find scoring systems don't necessarily need to be hyper-complex to contain depth and be interesting.

@@Square_Air Kinda been thinking about this lately, where I want to play for score but don't want something intricate. Stuff like Donpachi, Dangun Feveron, Thunder Dragon 2, Eschatos 19XX. Would argue maybe Cho Ren Sha but I really dislike that triple pickup mechanic. Dragon Blaze is my favorite scoring system of all time in theory, if only it weren't so damn hard just to survive. Psikyo in general just isn't my thing, though their games absolutely fit the bill. Can either of you think of other good examples for something that's only slightly more complicated than "kill everything"?

@@blossom357 Out Zone and Gundhara are great, and the more complicated tricks (collecting zero wing ships in OZ, kick milking in Gundhara) aren't essential. OZ can be counterstopped without ZW memes, and kick milking isn't too relevant until you can roughly clear Gundhara. Chou-Jikku Yousai Macross is cool, and almost like a prototype for Thunder Dragon 2. I believe it was the game NMK released just before TD2, they have very similar mechanics, barring a few changes. The boss milking here was toned down in TD2, but it still has a lot of creativity going for it. I can't remember if you've played Mahou Daisakusen, but that one is fun and simple compared to it's galaxy brain sequels. Kiki Kaikai 2 (Pocky and Rocky) is fun and simple as well. Gunbird 2 is easily my favourite shmup and is straightforward enough most of the time. Robotron 2084 is also magnificent, but golden age games aren't some people's cup of tea.

@@Square_Air I did like Macross II, although yeah it seems like TD2 just does it better. And honestly, I'd love older games if they weren't endless loops. I'm doubting this will happen, but I hope Hishouzame's M2 release gets some kind of single loop arrange mode. I'd play the hell out of that.

¡Partidaza!
