Thank you, Simon. for all these years of teaching us filmmaking

The main benefit of anamorphics for me is actually the difference perspective. When using a wide anamorphic like 40mm or 35mm (on S35) you get a very natural perspective, similar to the human eye you can’t get with cropping a spherical lenses. Also long lenses look much less claustrophobic, so you can generate real pressure with long lens close ups without getting too tight.
@mitchellbrinkerdp2 жыл бұрын
You mentioned that with real anamorphic you gain image on the left and right of frame, but the specific thing that I think is worth mentioning about anamorphic over cropping 2:39:1 is that if you shoot a 2x dequeeze coefficient, your 50mm lens now has the perspective of a 50mm but the FOV of a 25mm. Knowing that detail about the lens is huge for a DP. If you crop 2:39:1 on say a spherical 50mm, you have the perspective of a 50mm with the FOV of a 50mm. The mismatch of perspective and FOV is one of the biggest selling points for anamorphic. Cheers man!

One of the advantages of an anamorphic lens is it gives you the compression characteristics of a longer focal length while retaining the wider horizontal field of view of a shorter focal length. For example, a 50mm lens with a 2x stretch will have the the same horizontal field of view as a 25mm spherical lens, but without causing the perspective distortion typical of the wider lens. Cropping something shot with a spherical lens does not yield the same effect.

Even cheaper and safer way to get oval bokeh, is to have a oval cut out in a filter and put it on the front. Shoot the lens wide open. Also you can have different shapes cut outs to get stuff like stars, hearts and other tacky things.

I'd have loved if you compared them side by side! Afaik, an anamorphic has a distinct compression effect due to having a wider vertical FoV than an horizontal one

I tried out the anamor-fake look but there’s that extra something special that real anamorphic lenses have over just faking the look. Plus, like you addressed here, the oval shape is lost when stopping down using oval inserts.
@yargnad Жыл бұрын
Who is watching a movie for oval bokeh anyways. I think most people put far too much emphasis on the unimportant characteristics of anamorphics. I actually prefer round myself and is one of the reasons I've stayed away from using them for the most part; that along with the tacky flares.
@pHrenetikMUSIC Жыл бұрын
@@yargnad While I get your point, its a question of a set of subconscious details (bokeh, flare, wider perspective) that combine to create an allure, a sheen that no viewer would have singled out individually, but that beautifies the presentation as a whole. For example, nobody listens to a song for the studio condenser mics that were used. But if I took that mic away and recorded the singer with a standard dynamic mic, it would lose a certain magic and air that most listeners would describe as "not as good as the last song".

I haven't seen any way to really fake the anamorphic flares accurately yet, maybe sticking to overlays is the best you can do, have you found any way or filter that actually looks like anamorphic flares instead of a dirty lens?

Hey Simon, I've watching this channel for about 5 years, I have to say that I prefer the 17 year-old Simon Cade. The younger Simon had smart writing, you had special opinion about filmaking, you and me are the same age but I really admire that 17 year-old Simon Cade. 4 years ago, more people watching your channel than now, have you ever consider going back to that style ?

I hate that the modified helios lens is even called anamorphic. It's no different than putting one of those bokeh filters with the oval cut out shape and maybe a blue streak through the middle. The bokeh and flare are not what makes a lens anamorphic. It's strictly the horizontally compressed image that makes a lens anamorphic. Anyway, the mod is cool for the helios but the same thing can be achieved with the screw on bokeh lens without messing with the optics, and it's less effort :)

@boromirofgondor1856 Жыл бұрын
What ever works for your Art, and i say cheaper the better. But first a spherical lens distortion is on all angels cause its, Spherical, Unlike Anamorphic! field of view is something you cant also achieve on cropping a Spherical lens. Also you can not replicate the Lens effect with a filter. the nature of the Curved Anamorphic lens will make the Flare be more dynamic depending on where it is located unlike a filter which will always have a consistent lenght. another factor is the Chromatic aberration happening on the sides of the Anamorphic which is not the same on Spherical. overall, Anamorphic have more going than Spherical and can make a shot more dynamic. though shooting with it is much harder

This is Hackery, he doesn’t even mention the most important quality of anamorphic (flat flattering lensed faces while having wide vistas at same time, using spherical you’ll still have drivers license wide angle distorted faces close up to camera during wide shot). Talk about a hacks way to get easy views. Explain everything, we don’t need another disinformation filmmaker KZbin channel.
