Their quality has nothing to do with supposed "taking pride in their work" or some falsely perceived "lack" of it, silly. It's about design specifications. They don't go, "Uh, we don't really have pride in our work anymore, so we're gonna use thinner metal here or/and fewer rivets there or a smaller motor," etc., duh. Also, NOT everything built nowadays is crap, anyway. I've used plenty of products built in just the last handful of years that have been working great for plenty of time. Just because something's new enough that it wasn't built by your parents' generation doesn't mean it's crap, DUH. If you're dead-set on using a terrible, inefficient, self-damaging design of washer that all *actually developed* countries abandoned decades or even half a century ago, then "lots and lots of water" is needed to move the clothes around and prevent damage to the machine. The solution of course, is to tumble the clothes in a concentrated detergent solution with just enough water to saturate everything... but American manufacturers couldn't figure out how to do that without copying (WhirlPoop) or just going bankrupt trying (MayFail).

Machines, of almost any type, make, model, for whatever purpose that were made in the USA, were of great workmanship, quality, reliability, durability, and were not expensive. There were so many good brands back in the day. As for washing machines, Whirlpool, Maytag, and even Sears Kenmore, were some of the top choices. Some people would scoff at Sears products, but they actually had very good appliances, tools, power tools and even power equipment(which was made for them). If I remember, Bradford or Bradley was the one who made their garden tractors way, way back in the day. Those things were heavy duty. Don't forget when Kitchen Aid was a good blender/mixer. Singer had rock solid sewing machines for a time. I have my grandmother's antique Singer that folded into a wood desk type table. The machine was beautiful and flawless in appearance, at least until someone stuck in a garage for a while and the elements started getting to it. Remember when Harley's and Indian were THE motorcycles. Schwinn was the bicycle. America also had many piano companies that built high quality pianos back in the day. Ludwig's were the drums. On and On. Now, everything is made in china or elsewhere. All the chinese products are high teck, but low quality and durability. Everything is plastic these days.
