If want to try running a low range EV there is nothing wrong by accepting its limits then use it accordingly. People get over this thought that a car has to have no limits. Your missing out if you do. I liked this video! Well done again.

Cold winter journeys in an old 2012 Leaf make even a 31 mile trip to train station exciting: “Can I turn the heater on?” “Hope this 20 mph headwind doesn’t last the entire way.”

Donald Parish Got to emit the finding charging points and planning I’d enjoy. Sad thing is by the time I get a EV 300-400 miles will be the norm and there will be four to five times more charger available so it will be an non event. Some of the best drives I’ve had have been in snow because it was a mission and exciting. 😁 When you can comfortably do say the north coast 500 in Scotland one of my favourite drives all be stopping at Tounge as it gets boring on the East coast and taking in Glen Coe and Fort William and charge points are easy to find fossil is dead to me😁

I try to stop every two hours on a long trip and I don't drive an EV.... yet.. The other thing people should consider is what is your journey profile? So how many long journeys do you do in a year that require say one or two recharges on each leg of the journey compared to your average day to day use when you might not need to recharge more than say once or twice a week. This is the way I'm starting to think now. Sure long journeys will require a bit more time and more planning. But most days my use of an EV will be no different to an ICE car. Going for a longer range EV helps, but the extra battery capacity means more weight. So there has to be a sweet spot I guess.

Having done an 1100 mile journey in a 24kWh Leaf (Scotland to the south of France) I know what you mean ;) Be glad you didn't have to deal with the French charging infrastructure. Agree it's nice and relaxing to stop regularly, having your car force you to do so ain't a bad thing. (although I think 40kWh would be the sweet spot for us) As for battery temperature, we drove south in September with ambient temperatures in France in the upper twenties. Still no issue.

Did a trip to Bremen from Copenhagen 470 miles to and from, in 1994 in a lead acid powered City-El. Range was 60 miles between fast charges (45 minutes of 5kW for charging the usable 2.4kW capacity). It worked perfectly, especially as back then, only a few hundred free charging stations existed around central Europe, so most of the time, I got power for free from local businesses. The few places where they accepted my offered money totalled 5 EUR for the roundtrip.

That's true, but to stop every 100 miles you would need a real range of about 130 miles so that you can charge to 80% and arrive with something in reserve. With the 100 mile Leaf you need to stop every 70 miles.

5 years ago we travelled in a 24kw Leaf to northern Holland via Hull - Rotterdam ferry. No problems and only two bouts of range anxiety but what an adventure. There are pics of us on plug points all over Holland. Now we have just bought a used 30kw and planning to go via the tunnel when everything opens up again. Many more charge points now here and in Holland. My only worry is battery overheating but we will be overnight before going in the tunnel. Thanks for your informative videos.

Fun video! As a motorcyclist and an older retired guy between those 2 factors my longest ride/drive is dependent on my need to pee or saddle soreness so that averages around 150 miles straight as opposed to my youth when I coukd go about 230 before a needed break so yep it's the human component that is the real limiting factor. Excellent points about charging to 80% and especially if you have access to fast chargers.

Great video ! Agree with all your thoughts on EV driving. I did London to Dundee and back in December in my 24kWh - around 500miles took me about 16hrs and 10 rapids each way. Absolutely nuts of course, but it was an adventure and taught me a lot about the impracticalities of a short range Ev. Cost was quite low as had loads of free EH charges - I also remember that very same Doncaster Holiday Inn Polar charger - it takes some persistence to find at the back of the hotel in the dark. It’s interesting to note that the extra range in a 30kwh versus my 24kWh makes the journey significantly easier, I had to plan stops every 50miles or so - and things don’t always go to plan - had one scary time with flashing dashes ;-) Currently lusting after a Kona, but want to test drive one before committing...Incidentally I am also a fan of Scotch eggs...Keep up the great work with these videos !

I agree. A 350 to 400 mile EV is the sweet spot. Even though I make regular 500-mile trips in the United States, that still applies to me. One meal break and a couple of bathroom breaks would present plenty of opportunities to top up while making a 500 to 600 mile trip.

If EV can charge 80% in 20 minutes like SparkEV, even 240 miles range EV is enough since 80% is 192 miles, 3 hours drive at 65 MPH. Even in some adverse conditions, that's still 2 hours. As an example of charging being more important, SparkEV took 16 hours for 650 miles while this longer range Leaf took 17.5 hours for only 600 miles.

Hi there :) As someone who drives a lot for business, the range has always been an issue for me. When Tesla came along with the Model S, I could see that was a great proof of concept, but out of my price range. I live in Peterborough and used to have a client on the North coast of Scotland at Dounreay. When I went to work there, I used to drive from Peterborough to Inverness on a Sunday, which I used to do non-stop. I could manage it on a tank of petrol. Not because it was big or clever, just because I used to enjoy the drive, and never felt the need to stop. I must say, I have driven Saabs for years and they have, in my opinion, the most comfortable seats of any car. It used to take me eight and a half hours, but I never got out of the car feeling tired. Having said all of that. I would have been quite happy to stop once in a Tesla say around Edinburgh and charged up. From Inverness, Thurso is still two and a half hours drive from there. So it was a Long journey! Now that the e-Nero and Kona are around, I think for 80-90% of the population who can afford a £30K car, range just shouldn't be an issue. Obviously, it will take a while for these cars to filter down to people who can only afford to spend £10K or less, but for 50% of people, a 100 mile range is perfectly acceptable and these are becoming more and more affordable for people on the secondhand market. Great vlog of a real life journey and what it means in a Nissan Leaf!

The Kona and E-Niro would be good enough range, if we had loads of 350kw chargers around. My pee stop distance is probably around 3 hours, so maybe about 200 miles. So 230 real world miles range would be plenty if I could charge the car in 10 to 20 minutes.

Well done on the journey... just my wife and daughters go to the Republic of Ireland every year...... we journey from Nottingham to Hollyhead then ship it over to Dublin then journey to Kerry, the amount of electric charges is as many as two chargers. The amount of chargers should be more and over in the Republic of Ireland in Kerry I've only saw one electric charger and that is at the port where the boats arrive... there might be another at Barack'O' Barmer's stop, but that is about 45 minutes to a hour away from the port... So I guess in Ireland they need updating big time... (There may be more charging stops, just the way we go there is the fastest way, it takes us 12 hours, but that includes the ship journey.)

got to be honest, been looking at a range extender, namely, a Vauxhall ampera, it's got a very short battery range (which is going to be fine for my daily commute) but on longer journeys, using the extender engine it should prove to be a lot more convenient. They stopped making these because they didn't sell, but if they sold them now I think they would sell also it would help to bring people over to a full EV later, once they got used to plugging in.

In Australia where long journeys are more common they ask drivers to stop every two hours its called "Drive,Revive, Survive" . Up until the mid 1990's I recall many ICE cars had range anxiety as most couldn't go past 500 klms or 300 miles and in the 1970s/80s not many petrol stations were open after dark in country areas. When I was a young man I had a Honda Civic with about a 500 klm range if I was careful I would drive 5 hours straight before stopping especially on trips between Sydney and Melbourne just over 1,000 klms (600 miles). The longest trip I did just stopping for Petrol and food etc was 1,700 klms in one journey the highlight was on a bend where it looked like I was approaching a Semi (Lorry) but at the last minute another Semi Lorry was trying to overtake it and I literally drove between them in my 1975 Honda Civic...there was no shoulder to this part of the road only two lanes and raised up off ground level as it was going across a flood plain. But there was just enough width for the three of us. I had also just picked up a Hitchhiker who freaked out and asked to be dropped off at the next town. I have been following EVM for a few years as he struck me as a very commonsense person. We can import used Nissan Leaf's usually from Japan but I'd prefer ones from the UK as they have the 6.6 kw charge option (Japanese none have it ) and everything is already in English. But they are usually higher priced. Shipping is almost the same cost.

Aleksandr Vysockij He’s running a 30kWh Leaf, (25kWh useable. Presumably the trip started with a full charge, at Woodall Services, there was 33% charge left and he’d driven 70mi, so apx. 100mi range. With a very small margin of error, say he’s using 24kW of each charge, not including what’s left. Even at 30p/kW, that’s just £7-20 per 24kW. And he’ll get 100mi in winter driving. Name a fossil-burner, that’ll travel 100mi on £7-20 worth of petrol or diesel. Plus for every mile/km traveled in a fossil-burner, the engine is also burning a small amount of oil, is wearing its various drive belts, shortening the life of the exhaust, plus pumping out end-user particulates and various gaseous pollutants. This car is evidenced to have a real world winter range, of 100mi per charge. Given the figures above, that’s 600mi = 6 charges at £7-20 (if costed at 30p/kW) meaning the total journey’s fuel cost would be £43.-20. But he’s probably a Polar Plus member and thus be paying a reduced equivalent pence/kW. Making the journey even cheaper. At the video’s start, he’d done the sums and costed this trip at apx. £20-00, which means he’s paying around 13.9p/kW.

DC, at least one charger was on free vend, presumably on each leg of the journey. Andy's estimate will be about right; he's a Yorkie, and that's an essential! For the record, our small fossil car does about 60 mpg (100 km per 4.5 litres) if driven carefully. That's about £10 per 100 miles/ 160 km, at today's prices. In a bigger car, that would be at least £20. For fuel alone. We'll have an EV for our next car.

@@dcvariousvids8082 Hmm, I own 2 fossil ICE vehicles. Not to rain on the EV parade, but my Nissan Qashqai (1.5 Diesel) did a 300 mile round trip with over 50+mpg @ a steady 65 mph. Started the journey with half a tank, didn't refuel until home and under a 1/8th of a tank left. Half full was £30. Below calculation link a bit generous, so if I said it cost about £20~ that would be fair. 2hr 15 min journey each way. Didnt need to stop and didn't need to spend a small fortune on coffee and snacks while waiting. I DO like the EV idea, but it's not within my affordability bracket just yet. I'd have confidently got the same result with our more venerable Fiesta 1.4 diesel, but with less comfort. Both of the above where picked to maximise mpg within our price bracket, and stand up well in comparison it seem 👍 Wear and tear vs EV's does appear to be inferior. However, between my remaining loan repayments and fuel we put into the Nissan each month (fiesta paid off) its only costing £275pm Simply no way I could get a similar sized / spec'd SUV sadly close to that from what I've researched. Then add the battery lease charges that most seem to come with (another £60pm) and its so far the wrong side of viability as to laughable. Shame really, but the % of drives who can afford a regular (3 year max?) Vehicle upgrade in the price range of say £30-45k isn't going to make much of a dent in the CO2 issues. Its a good start, but the cascade effect to the lower end of the market (ie biggest %) of vehicles in the 5-15k range isn't sufficient www.fleetnews.co.uk/costs/fuel-cost-calculator/?FuelType=Diesel&PencePerLitre=125.82&Mileage=100&ManufacturerId=17&ModelGroupId=127&DerivativeId=40269&Mpg=50

I really like the Ioniq but the range puts me off a bit. Then I started making a note of the long journeys (100+ miles) I’ve made in a single day. From last June up to today I’ve driven 100 miles on two occasions! Most of my day to day driving is less than 50 miles so an EV with a range of say 150 would be perfectly adequate.

400 ish miles is the sweet spot, from a charging point of view. Not for the range, because yes the person is the weak point, but if you're in a higher voltage and higher milage EV you're able to add high power where you need it without the worry of slower charging because you're in the sweet spot for charging more.

" & a very toastie battery" I have done 20 000 miles since June 2018 2500 miles a month in 250 to 600 mile chunks, with 3 to 6 rapid and possibly 2 low chargers per chunk. Winter is easier on the battery on long journeys but in Summer 500 miles or three rapids is about all im prepered to do as I have yet to go into the Red temp zone.

Think 300 miles motorway speeds in winter is plenty range for almost everyone and that would probably also factor in 15% battery determination over the lifespan of owning the car. Having said that when the Infrastructure is in place and 150kw chargers are the norm that range can be reduced to around 250

Ah the food dropped problem in cars! Sounds like you need to have, either a hand held vacuum cleaner which you plug in to the car's cigarette charger port using it's adapter, Or use a charged up battery only hand held vacuum cleaner to get those pesky crumbs of lost food using a narrow long crevice tool to get into those tight slim gaps near the seats? ( if you use the plug in travel vac best use it when your charging up the EV to save using up the battery! : ) Just a idea?

The battery temp is surprisingly low (after 600 miles) but then again so is the outside ambient temp. I wonder how bad it would've been to do the trip I usually do in my i3 over the summer from ireland to Hungary. That is impressive though I'm not gonna lie. Great Job

I noted with interest that the Ecotricity charger had been shut down by the emergency stop button. I had the same problem at 3 chargers on the M6 North. Two of the chargers restarted, but the charger at Gretna rebooted but the app would not connect. Is it just coincidence or is there some Pro Fracking warrior trying to disrupt EV drivers.

When 82 miles range rated SparkEV can do 650 miles in 16 hours (1.5 hours less than 600 miles with this 30 kWh Leaf), this trip is not much a surprise. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2exn2SlZZ6CepY Sad thing is, new 40 kWh Leaf would probably be even slower due to battery getting too hot even in -9C ambient temperature.

Holy actual **ck; that battery temp was just under the red zone! Apparently DCFC puts too damn much heat into the pack, even in winter conditions! I mean, my 30kW Leaf's battery barely gets to 5 bars of heat; and that's only after multiple full-throttle starts! Yes, I know how hard that is on the battery; but it's always a good idea to know what your car can do.

Interesting stuff as usual, many thanks. “My back’s killing me”. Does that imply the seats aren’t as comfortable as they could be? I’d be happy with a real world range of around 140 to 150 miles from 100% charge at home to a first rapid charge at about 25% and around 100 miles between rapid charges from 25% to 80% en route. Anything more seems unnecessary to me as taking a break is a good road safety benefit by avoiding fatigue, and 25% residue still leaves the option of reaching the next charger if the first is out of order. Trouble is I can’t afford an EV which meets this spec!

I agree with all you have said about regular stops etc but doubt if you could have done the same on a hot summers day without using that Holiday Inn. MY family Diesel has a 820 miles range (60 bucks) , I get it no one will drive for 12 Hours straight however is nice to choose : 1- When to Stop 2- How long to Stop for 3-Having the Choice to skip stops If you don't feel safe or if the place looks like a Horror Movie, . In my opinion Driving a Diesel is cheaper on Long journeys , Surely Stopping once, is cheaper than stopping around 18x to complete 1200 miles return journey
@ElectricVehicleMan

I get what you're saying but EV's are undoubtedly better for day to day driving and commuting (and way cheaper) so in my head your family derv is less convenient and more costly for 90% of journeys but more convenient for the other 10%/long journeys. Most people can count on one hand how many trips they do above 300 miles in a year, meaning half of your fuel tank is almost always redundant (if you get me).

Depends on the range of the car. Remember you set off with 100% so the first part is from full. So on a 200mile trip even in my Leaf30 it would only need one stop. It also doesn’t matter what you end up with at the destination so can run it down more. The 30Leaf is roughly 1 mile per %.
