Wish we had Garratts in the US, would love to see a Mallet vs Garratt type pull contest

The Big Boy's have nothing on the 6029 A Garrett. I've had chill bumps just watching the excursion trips & the mainline service of this fantastic workhorse. We don't have such unbelievable train service. Truth is we never had except between highly populated cities and that existed in early 1900's thru 1948. Metro Atlanta has a population of over six million people witn only one train running between New Orleans & New York with a short stop running south in the A.M & North P.M. during the past /present 49 years. Amtrak employees do the best they can with the little they have to operate. Best Regards, Ken

Kenny Anderson thanks for the great comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed filming it Cheers Lucas

@@762Media42 The Garratts had two problems that the Big Boys and Challengers did not have. As they used up their fuel and water they lost tractive effort and on long hard pulls they ran out of steam.

Great video. I enjoy it so far, and have paused it, to subscribe, and post this. I live in the USAIN the State of Maryland, on the Eastern Shore, and very much enjoy train videos. Besides the beautiful steam Engine, you also have some stunning scenery. Thank you again for the video.

I passed through Kandos back in April 2022 & it looked for all the world like the haulking great sleeper was bolted to the line barring any further travel towards Rylstone.... An even greater shame is that the line into & out of Mudgee is now covered in tar & just about all the sleepers at the station in Mudgee itself appear to have completely rotted away. A puzzle as the line was put back into service (briefly) back in the 90's. A very pretty/picturesque line all the way through that REALLY should be put back into service, even if a semi-regular rail-motor through the week & the occasional visit from tour trains, Thanks for sharing!

Hi Thanks for watching! From what I remember the line from Charbon to Rylstone is booked back into traffic whenever a tour train visits because there was a tour there a few months ago and another one soon Cheers Lucas

Visiting my Auntie in Liverpool in the late 1950s I saw a couple of ex LMS Garretts at Stoke on Trent sheds they were in a sorry state.

just listening to the sound the loco makes, this is something incredible. and therefore my questions are QUESTIONS only. no nasty comments or the likes. the first cistern behind the Loco, I assume is water? what is in the second cistern, before the 2 diesel helpers?also water? and why TWO diesel helpers? i know the story about dynamic braking and extra light and power for the air conditioning... or that they are there, just in case something SHOULD happen, to get the train off a busy mainline. in order not to create havoc with the timetables... But why TWO? is one not strong enough? i mean just for fun they dont come along. the dispatchers and organizers must for sure have thought why two diesel locos?
@762Media422 жыл бұрын
Hiya! Reason for the two diesels from memory was the GL for dynamic braking and the 44 to lead the train from Rylstone to Clandulla. Tbh the Garrett could haul the load but the diesels are simply for operational purposes Bear in mind this was filmed back in 2018 so the reasoning may be different to what I’ve said but that’s from memory

@@762Media42 thank you for your fast reply. and as i said, my questions should have been in no way sarcastic or funny or insulting. just curious why. and your answer said that.

I am not sure why Garretts were not made more extensive use of except they were employed at the end of steam traction!

I know of that one, it's out near Cowra somewhere, and it's a crying shame to see it just rusting away.
