Ep.2: Race for the Aliens is part of the 3-track set Re-Volt Abduction. It was made by CED! and published in February 2024. The tracks are intended to be played as part of a custom cup, but for this series I'll be reviewing them separately. The middle track, played here, is the meat of the experience, with the outer two tracks taking more of a prelude and epilogue type role.
Race for the Aliens is over a kilometer long, and will take longer to race than regular tracks because it has low gravity. There are very few tracks utilising different gravity settings, and I was excited to see more. This track utilises the gimmick very well, I find, and of course for a theme that fits it. The low gravity is combined with force fields to push cars around in several places of the track, which combines greatly. What I also appreciate is that the force fields are represented visually.
This is an instance track, containing no original 3D modelling. A lot of the track is easily recognisable as JimK's off-road kit, but instances from other sources were incorporated very well to give a fresh and cohesive track. The visuals are simple, but effective, and although it would be possible to have more atmosphere, for an instance track it is really quite effective at that, with plenty of details, some of which animated.
The gameplay is unique because of the combination of two unusual gimmicks, and the track flows fairly well. The AI is not always too competitive, but this might be because the Re-Volt developers didn't design it to perform well under low gravity and force fields.
Overall, this is a track I think you should definitely check out, preferably in the context of the entire cup! I'm hoping to feature the other two tracks later.
