Yeah, old video but i got almost the exact same problem, i mounted my noise source in a alumimium box and it works perfect until i mount the "roof" of the box, then the output power goes down about 10-15dBm.. But when the source warms up 10 minutes it sometimes goes stable again.. I glued a ferrite bar over the MMICs and it looks like it helped but i will remove it and test the coppertape method, thanks a lot for this video, it hit my problem bullseye but i also got other problem with my board.. It heats like crazy and the last MMIC in the chain gets 5.6-5.7V supply so i removed the three 100 ohm resistors for the biasing and mounted a 7805 regulator instead to supply the three MMICs.. And i mounted a little heatsink on the Boost converter.. A lot of work just to get the board to work as it should in the first place.. I dont know if the creator runs with to much voltage on purpose to get extra noiselevel out but maybe it is just my board that is a little bit sick.. The MMICs is almost 100% counterfeit i would think.. Me stop rambling i will.. Bye..

This was a great project and likewise example of problem solving. I've watched most of your videos. I've found more meaning and application for your demonstrations as my skills and experiment levels improve. A great breadth of application areas. I'm still using noise generator, but you've got the 21st century upgrades for your garage. Thanks.

Though lots of hams are getting TinySA's these days, very few of them understand what it means that they lack a tracking generator. So when I was at a local ham swap I picked up an old transistorized noise source to use with my TinySA. It was in a box of odds and ends junk underneath an exhibitor's table, (the place where I find all the best stuff.) I got it for $2 and it works fine. But I suspect that good KZbin Elmers like you will substantially increase the interest in used, prepackaged noise sources for folks with TinySA's.

Be CAREFUL with those cheap noise sources, some have VERY high ENR ! Yupper, good ol copper tape, great stuff to have around ! TNX 4 the upload, 73 N8AUM

I know nothing about noise sources but bought a nooelec sdr+ham it up upconverter with noise source package recently. I think I probably should've gotten an sdrplay rspdx in instead.

The volume is used with an option I do not have. It adds a demodulator function at the very end of the analyzer and allows AM and FM audio to be sent to a speaker.

@@patricedumont5203 the only experience with SDR is the really cheap ones (receive only). They can be a poor mans spectrum analyzer so should be able to use the noise source on the input of a filter and the SDR on the output so see the filter shape

Good afternoon Guy, Would one be able to accuratly tune a duplexer w a Noise source plus SA that doesn't have a tracking generator? I wonder if between a TinyVNA tuning the return loss and the Noise Gen+SA if one would be able to optimize repeater duplexer tuning, if one didn't have a high dynamic range VNA. I can't wait to have retirement time on my hands to play with such things. In the mean time, I will use my Agilent 8712EB when duplexer tuning is required. Just was wondering what you thought. I believe the tools needed for duplexer tuning (never did it myself) will come down to dynamic range as you already said. The NanoVNA is not good enough. I'm not sure about the TinySA. A good spectrum analyzer and noise source should be able to get the job done. If more range is needed then running the noise source trough an amp would help on the high side. There are little RF generators ($25) that I will be featuring in upcoming videos that would be better than the noise source. They can sweep and while it won't track with the analyzer it is still quite usable. I think the noise source is fast and get you in the ball park, then move to a generator for the final adjust. I'm jealous about the 8712

@@IMSAIGuy You did do well, I'd much rather have an 8921 than my Motorola R2001D (also $100) I believe it was made by Gen-Rad. But it does the job. I came across a Tek 2235 that right now is listing for $80. I am sure that I could get it for $50 but I must resist. It's the first new scope I was authorized to purchase in industry, so it has nostalgic value.. I must resist!

Wow. That's a good learning experience about the effects of screening especially at VHF and UHF frequencies. The board without screen and the the box acting like a resonance box at 1.5 GHz is like the microwave in the oven. You, finally nailed it. Thanks for posting.
