@vinucche

So I’m an amateur electric audio circuit designer, and I have a theory as to why this doesn’t sound nearly as good as it could. That (what I’m assuming to be Xenon filled) tube is just a high voltage diode, and it’s probably working alongside a standard silicon diode as well, likely in a common “noise gate” configuration. It would appear that the converted high voltage audio signal is being sent directly through the diodes, with our Xenon tube putting on a show as it is filled with signal, and the entire circuit generating a harsh crossover distortion/fuzz. This functions because when the upper voltage threshold of the diodes are met, the signal hard clips, but as a result, it also acts as a shut off valve when the signal diminishes, because the diodes stop conducting and cut the output. This style of circuit is normally used with standard rectifier diodes in the later stages of higher gain tube amplifiers, to act as a proper noise gate. It’s normally placed later in the amp, so the signal is always large enough to pass (but too small to clip and distort), and when the input diminishes to close to nothing, the diodes shut off and don’t pass anything. My recommendation for improvement on the concept would be to use the gas tube in a soft clipping feedback configuration with a high voltage OPamp, almost TubeScreamer style. Another option would be to have a variable DC bias of the diodes, to control the threshold of the noise gate. Just my 2¢ though.
@The_Mister_E
@The_Mister_E 6 жыл бұрын
It says "Xenon Filling" on the bottom left of the pedal. You ought to send that feedback to the manufacturers!
@samuelmumby7982
@samuelmumby7982 6 жыл бұрын
My suggestion would be pass a low frequency through tube to avoid the gating, if there's always a signal it won't be so harsh. However I lack the intricate knowledge surrounding voltages, low frequencies and xenon to confirm any of this.
@vinucche
@vinucche 6 жыл бұрын
Samuel Mumby That’s an idea that would work, if the frequency is below human hearing; but that would require a low frequency oscillator circuit, which would need more parts than a basic DC bias feed. Plus the gate would always be “off” then, without the variability. It’s not out of the reach of feasibility though, and is a really interesting concept!
@lucasmunoz6951
@lucasmunoz6951 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm...if it works like a rectifier, and rectifiers exist the later stages of high gain tube amps, then why not put it in the FX Loop of a cranked tube amplifier. Since the pre-amp signal will be much larger than any guitar signal, the noise-gate effect may roll off more naturally. Also without the pedal running thru the pre-amp the treble wouldn't sound like sandpaper grinding away my eardrums; however, I imagine the knobs would still take endless tweeking to get it working JUST right.

Its a nice pedal, but im afraid the bulb there isnt a gimick, which is sort of its downside. I feel like the voltage shooting across is the actual signal amplified. Would have been much better if they had a parallell wire running controlling the actual signal and having the bulb be a visual element only. Signal seems to be cutting out and sounds a little broken.

Hmm... So this would be fun after a delay and/or reverb to "cut off" both of those things or gate them in fun ways. I want to hear this through a phaser, I think that'll be neat. Since the plasma in the tube is, well, plasma in a tube, this will probably respond to magnets and other devices that have some sort of EM (think all the usual electric motor-powered stuff). I want to play, i think there are all sorts of ways to use this.

I get the feeling the plasma is mostly for show and doesn't really contribute to the signal too much. Back when singing arcs/plasma speakers were a bit of a trend on KZbin, there were a ton of videos that had a more subdued version of this sound. They recreated the audio perfectly but had a soft crackling underneath them. This pedal sounds like what would happen if you put the audio from those videos through a cheap distortion pedal so that the crackling was much louder.

Honestly, you gotta play this thing yourself to get the hype. I put this in front of my 1968 Alamo Fury, and it straight up rips. This guy didn't set up the EQ the way I like it, and I'm pretty bummed about that. It's a superb pedal for the fuzz obsessed.

the pedal is cool and all, but what happened to the oldschool way of getting this effect by overdriving your amp way higher than it has any business being?

you can still do that.

Interesting stompbox. In my opinion it's like an OD,Distortion and fuzz pedal all rolled up in one. Doesn't really impress me. The crackling sound would drive me freaking crazy!! I get this queasy bad connection vibe. But cool demo.

Sorry, but I have a Bugera v22 with a ripped speaker that can get every one of those sounds. Just saying. I'm so over the gotta have it because it's new thingy. Bugera, ripped speaker, same sound.

In a studio fucking around with this pedal. A difficult beast to tame. Result: Too much Jack White to handle.

Castlehill650 it’s a very specific sound, I’d be interested in hearing it in a fully produced song

60 Cycle Hum It is very specific and not “1000x worse than a metal zone” as someone else said (although it is fun to joke). We were experimenting with lead tones for a specific solo, and initially we were thinking of a “Jack White” esque tone, however we ended up with something more traditional. It definitely may have worked out in our favor regardless.

Please, make a review of the Way Huge Conquistador! I think it is a much better gated Fuzz/Distortion pedal! And it costs half of the price of a Plasma pedal.

Ah! Podrías probarlo mezclando Plasma, flanger y Plasma con Phaser? Y Plasma con Wah-wah cómo sonaría? Se podría probar? 😃 Y plasma con heavy metal, qué pasaría? 😄😄😄 Muchas gracias!!! 😃😃😃
