If they're caught they'll be brought before their Bishop and will either be fellowshiped or excommunicated. Sexual sin isn't just direct intercourse. Sexual activity of any kind outside the bonds of marriage is considered a very serious sin on par with murder. The Church has a Sunday school class for Investigators and new members as well as fellowshiped members called Gospel Principles that has a whole section discussing "The Law of Chastity" in detail. There are no loopholes, those who think there are or simply don't care will have much to answer for in the eyes of the Lord.

What about the plural wives? How can men populate their own worlds when they're exalted to god hood without plural wives?
@JLM18837 жыл бұрын
In the Pre-existence, God the Father had a wife. She was our Heavenly Mother. Their Spirit Children had to grow to maturity before they were sent to Earth to experience a mortal existence. It's one husband and one wife, who over a long time have a very large family together.
@LabuEx20527 жыл бұрын
Plural marriage was first introduced into Mormonism by Joseph Smith in the 1830's . It is a common misconception to think of the practice of polygamy as starting with Brigham Young and the Mormon's trip west. Even though Joseph Smith had already married several women, he did not dictate his famous revelation on eternal marriage and polygamy until 1843 (Doctrine and Covenants, section 132). By the time he died he had been sealed to at least 33 women. 1 1 In a Salt Lake Tribune review of Todd Compton's In Sacred Loneliness on Smith's polygamy we read: In identifying 33 well-documented wives of [Joseph] Smith - other researchers have placed the figure as high as 48 - Compton found that in the case of 11 women, Smith's polygamy was polyandrous. That is, the women were married and cohabiting with their husbands, who mostly were faithful Mormons, when Smith married them. Yet not one divorced her "first husband" when Smith was alive. Indeed, they continued to live with their civil spouses while married to Smith. "If one superimposes a chronological perspective, one sees that of Smith's first 12 wives, nine were polyandrous...." Compton, a practicing Mormon...spent much of the 1990's combing pioneer records, diaries and reminiscences.... Eleven of Smith's wives were between ages 14 and 20, nine were in their 20s, eight were in Smith's own peer group of 31 to 40, two were in their 40s and three in their 50s. . . . Toward the end of Smith's life, knowledge of his secret marriages began to leak out. William Law, Smith's second counselor ... filed suit against the church leader for living 'in an open state of adultery' with 19-year-old Maria Lawrence. In a speech a month before his death, Smith responded by flatly denying polygamy, which was illegal under federal law. "What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one," he said. (Salt Lake Tribune, December 13, 1997, p. C2. See Smith's entire speech in History of the Church, Vol. 6, pp. 408-412.) For the next fifty years the practice of plural marriage was considered essential to attain godhood. Brigham Young, second president of the LDS Church, declared "The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy" (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, p. 269, August 19, 1866).
@JLM18837 жыл бұрын
I love the detailed response, but it's not entirely relevant to my reply to your some what snide comment. Plural wives wouldn't be necessary for creating Spirit Children to populate a world, as LDS Doctrine states that our Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother (a singular wife) created all of their Spirit Children who populate the Earth(s). Interesting thing about Plural Marriage being essential to achieve exaltation, from 1843-1904 only 22-33% of the LDS church practiced Plural Marriage for that 60 year period. Either it really wasn't that essential, or no one was preoccupied with "Godhood". I'd like to point out that just because a Church authority (Prophet or otherwise) says something, it's not an official doctrine unless it's declared as revelation from God, and then sustained by the body of the Church. I recommend reading "Joseph Smith's Polygamy" by Brian C. Hales, it's a 3 volume set and considered the most comprehensive work on the subject to date.
@LabuEx20527 жыл бұрын
According to what I've read, Hale is not very credible. See this board discussion: exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,803482,803577 Fawn McKay Brodie's biography on Joseph Smith gives direct testimony from wives of Joseph and their relatives stating that Smith did practice polygamy and polyandry. I know all of this is hard to hear, no one wants to be told that what they have believed in for so many years is wrong.
@JLM18837 жыл бұрын
It was only a recommendation, do with it what you will. You seem to be the type of person who'd do thorough research to the extent that you would like determine for yourself if Hales is credible as a source rather than just taking someone else's word for it. I fault to see anything that's hard to hear, nothing has gone against what I've been taught in Church. I don't care how plural marriage was practiced, I'm LDS and we don't practice it today, and even if we did I still wouldn't care. I'm focused on what I'm doing and where I'm going and how I treat others on the way. As far as becoming Gods concerns me, see: Psalms 82:6 & John 10:34.

The Mormon church STILL practices polygamy. The last LDS president that had more than wife was Howard W. Hunter who married Inis Stanton as his second eternal wife in 1990, NOT 1890, by Mormon convention of eternal marriage that gave Hunter two wives in eternity making Howard Hunter a polygamist. Gordon Hinckley performed the ceremony knowing full well the implications. Hinckley stated that Howard would have BOTH women as wives in the next life.

Being Married and being Sealed are different things. My mom was sealed but later divorced, then married my dad and was still sealed with the other guy for a time till they were able to process their temple divorce. Sealed is an eternal spiritual union that goes beyond the grave. I married my wife 5 months ago and it was in a temple. The differences are this.. marriage: "Till death do we part", or.. "For time and for all eternity." I prefer the second.

This is the great deception or bait that is used to lure prospective converts to the church fooling them into believing that the Mormon church is a Christian church..This man avoids to mention that the Mormon Jesus is not the Jesus of the bible, just as the Muslim Jesus is also not the Jesus of the bible..The Muslim Jesus calls the Jesus of the bible a lair that he is not the son of God who died for our sins...and the Mormon Jesus calls the Jesus of the bible a liar claiming that salvation is not through Christ's grace alone, and also that Christ suffered for our sins while praying to the father in the garden and not on the cross- the cross which is clearly the symbol of victory over sin and death..so in essence the Mormon church is saying that Christ died for nothing...Hence both Muslims and Mormons are offended by the symbol of the cross..and so is satan by the way..
@marioskitchen71308 жыл бұрын
Actually Jesus did die on the cross..and on the third day he rose from the dead..and then after forty days he ascended into heaven where he waits for those who believe in Him..The only true religion is Christ alone.
@marioskitchen71308 жыл бұрын
All I can tell you is that I know what my belief in Christ's grace has done for me..for many years I tried different churches, but it was always following laws and rules, and then feeling guilty when I broke some of those rules..But when I invited Christ alone into my heart and life, I became a new creation..In the past I hated a million people and I struggled with being able to forgive..and that is just one example..and if a rotten negative person like myself was able to be changed, then for sure I know that it was Christ who changed me..and this is all the evidence I have for you...
@marioskitchen71308 жыл бұрын
All you have to do is just ask Christ if He is really there to come into your life..and if you truly searching for something you feel is missing in your life and heart..you will know How truly real he is.

Technically speaking the cross is a pagan symbol. To the early Christians it was a symbol of death and torture, as used by the Romans.It wasn't THE symbol of Christianity until Emperor Constantine, had his "vision" and "converted" to Christianity. He merely used it as a political symbol and little else.

The absolute worst apologetic I've ever heard from a religious leader concerning the racist issue." It's behind us", BEHIND US?? Sorry but that's a moral issue that your church got wrong and if God is the source of morality then it's a false prophecy and therefore your church is false.
@chaywarburton20207 жыл бұрын
It is behind us. The Lord leaves the past in the past as well. Heavenly Father never makes a mistake... though those who receive His revelation are not perfect they themselves make mistakes, I'm sorry you were offended or are just justifying your anger but the truth is; is it's behind us.
@rdccs51227 жыл бұрын
Chay Warburton it's not behind you, it was one of your prophets who said it. so did God lie to him when he told him to teach it? when your prophets speak it's truth, that's what you mormans say. so did your prophet lie to you? yes he did and they keep lying.
@chaywarburton20207 жыл бұрын
It's behind us. He was told to teach that from the Lord because it wasn't time yet. Then when it became the right time it was established. Where in the scriptures does the Lord give everything all at once? He doesn't.. but line upon line and precept upon precept. The Lord has said "wither by my own voice or the voice of my servants, it is the same." So yes the prophets are telling the truth, I know Gordon Hinckley was a prophet and Thomas S. Monson is the true prophet today on the earth.
@JLM18837 жыл бұрын
flatpat Blacks were always allowed into the LDS Church, it was never segregated like many other Christian Churches in the 19th Century they were denied the Preisthood, but not originally. Joseph Smith and even Brigham Young ordained men of African decent while Joseph lead the LDS Church most notably Elijah Able and Walker Lewis. The Priesthood ban didn't even go into effect until five years after Brigham Young began leading the LDS Church. The actual cause is somewhat of a mystery, but it was clearly influenced by Protestant ideas. It is also important to note that Prophets are not infallible (a few Prophets of the Bible made mistakes so minor, some with lasting consequences) and aren't constantly speaking the word of God. Many people (even some in the LDS Church) would find it surprising to learn that the Priesthood Ban on men of African decent, wasn't actually a Doctrine of the Church but a tragically misguided policy. In order for the word's of a Prophet to be Doctrine he must declare it to be revelation from God. There is absolutely no evidence of that occurring, we have always recorded our revelations. And while Brigham Young's (and later Church leaders') statements about Blacks and the Priesthood are found in The History of the Church and The Journal of Discourses, not mention of revelation from God is made on the subject. Not until the Priesthood ban was lifted in 1978, when that was declared as revelation from God. The Curse and Mark of Cain which were used inaccurately by Christians in America to justify slavery and actually caused the Baptist Church to split. First off the Curse of Cain and Mark of Cain in the Book of Genesis are actually two different things. The Curse was Cain and his family's banishment to the Land of Nod which east of Eden (Genesis 4:11-14). The Mark (which isn't described at all) was a mercy from God. He marked Cain and his decedents so that they wouldn't suffer the same fate as Able (Genesis 4:15). The Protestants in America looked at the Curse of Ham to further justify the Slave trade, since Ham's descendants were cursed to be servants to servants (Genesis 9:20-17) and eventually Cain's "curse" of dark skin and the curse of Ham's descendants were combined.

This interview was not the time or place to offer an explanation. The LDS Church made a public statement that did go into details about this issue several years ago. Go find it and read it. And another point was that it was never a prophecy. It was merely 19th Century thinking.
