Tim Donaghy could have been a blessing in disguise for the NBA. But the league missed the opportunity to clean up the culture. The fact that Donaghy was shown to be totally above board in his cooperation with both the league and the FBI in the investigation means that he pointed the way to widespread problems like referees allowing their personal regard for certain players to influence their officiating and how the loose-lipped way of dealing with inside information fed the gambling beast, including those in organized crime. But the NBA's attitude was "Donaghy was an embarrassment, now he's gone, so let's get back to business as usual."
@alwillk Жыл бұрын
Very true. The fbi suspected other refs were involved and were going to use donaghy as an informant but stern went to the media to try and save what integrity the NBA had left.

The. FBI suspected other refs? They’re all doing it, because they’re being instructed to do so. The league didn’t miss an opportunity to clean up the culture, because they don’t want to clean it up. There’s too much money coming to the league in the form of gambling for them to want to clean it up. Sports are real, in that the players are the best of the best in the world, but the outcomes of the games are fabricated. If the masses realized this, the sports world would be ruined.

All that winning, deflate gate pushed under the rug, he changed to a super team at 40 and won the very first year....it's just good business, it pays to have the players that people love, actually playing (LeBron James constant finals runs) Refs have been impacting the game with the whistle for years, they're actually supposed to (balancing the fouls out, making up for missed/bad calls, managing game flow) "gotta beat them by 15 to win by 1" (said many of LeBron's opponents in game 7's)

The NFL and NBA are such crooked organizations. The only reason Tim Donaghy got caught is because he got sloppy. There is absolutely no doubt that the NBA still does it’s best to rig many games to obtain certain matchups or to extend a series so they can generate as much revenue as they can possibly get. It’s obvious, though, that sometimes it doesn’t work despite their obvious attempts simply because the team the NBA wants to lose is unexpectedly hot and makes a very high percentage of their jump shots which foils the efforts of the NBA to succeed in fixing that game. The NBA knows they must be as discreet as possible, so they can’t call fouls EVERY time, but just enough to slow any momentum gathered and deposit it to the team they need to win. But if that team is making many of their shots despite obvious favoritism towards the other team, there isn’t much the officials can do despite their attempts to fix the outcome.

Amazing that in 2023 the nba is still fixing/rigging games and there has never been a real investigation..

The Bucks/Sixers and obviously Lakers/Kings series were rigged. It was so bad that I simply could not watch anymore for a long time. I don't care what the NBA says in even defending Tim to a degree, because it's in their best interest to sweep it under the rug. It's all still very shady.

its always been hilarious when companies and governments make money off it they call it "Gaming". When they dont they call it illegal Gambling Ironic part is a ref who made 300k got involved with the mob over $2,000 a game and claims he only made $100,000 hitting 80% of his picks. He is either a horrible money manager or he wasn't even trying to get money down..

Referees influence games all the time. As a sports bettor, I really try to focus on games that are not popular.. like a regular season MLB game. Games like NFL playoffs and NBA playoffs are always influenced.
@bfg5291 Жыл бұрын
The NFL, MLB, AND NBA are inviting this to happen now. Everybody is sponsored by a gambling platform, and in the past 2 years, there's been nearly a dozen suspensions for gambling on games FROM CLUB FACILITIES!!

Just looking at how long this video is, shows exactly why conventional TV, and by extension Cable and Satellite services, are failing. The show is on for an Hour, yet it's actually ONLY about 38 minutes. Which means over 35% of the show is useless commercials. Nobody wants to waste 35% of their time. It's just way WAY too greedy by these TV companies. A few commercials is fine but when it's more then a third of every show, it becomes extremely problematic. At least we got KZbin, who as of now understands that limiting adds is extreme important.

This on-line betting is an infirmia. It will destroy all of these sports! Why do they think that all of the former commissioners of ALL of these sports fought so hard to keep it away from their leagues!? Nothing good will come from this, there is too much money involved! The College sports will be the first to be adversely effected, and then it will destroy the pro games as well. There is just too much money involved for it not to happen! It will corrupt the officials, the players, the coaches, the team Doctors it will poison all aspects of the games! An NFL team in LV!??? That is just asking for trouble, and they will get it! There have already been Congressional committees formed to investigate pro sports on many different issues like drugs! When this goes bad (and it will) the damn Government will be running all the pro teams! Can't they see it!? There have already been 5 NFL players suspended for violation of the leagues gambling policy! Do they think that will get better over time!? They just can't see it, they are already BLINDED by all the money that they could never get to in the past! This will destroy sports!

I remember the game where he kind of exposed himself. He called like 3 travels on Allen Iverson when he clearly didn’t travel. Iverson spazzed out so bad and that’s when they really started looking into him. He just got too greedy and a lot of people were saying he was a dirty red because he made it so obvious.
@CH-wn8sq8 ай бұрын
I don't get why that's so bad. He is just a person betting on a sports outcome. Who knows if the info he gets is accurate or not. It has shown to be accurate, yes, but everyone is an expert on a certain sport in varying degrees. He could have been completely wrong and not won anything. His knowledge on the game is what made him money, you could argue he had inside info but so does every single person associated with the NBA or any sport for that matter. So I don't see how someone using their knowledge of something to make a bet is so bad. Politicians do this all the time with stocks and they never face any consequences.
