I find it undemocratic that sport books can ban serial-winners. It’s flooring your own losses, which it not common business. It should be banned - if people keep beating your odds, you should go out of business it’s your business risk
@namastyle5 ай бұрын
The problem isn't that books ban winners, but rather that they limit their action to only a few dollars. Other sites like Fanduel will limit action to a percentage of what they offer the general public, which is especially insidious. Sportsbooks should be regulated to forced to accept "bids" on their "offers" with the same amount of depth/liquidity to the public. If casinos are willing to allow a punter to wager $100K on an outcome, they should be forced to accept a sharp bettor to take that same bet. If this results in a world where sportsbooks are extra risk-adverse and have lower limits for everyone, if there are increased cooldowns for the algorithms to suspend markets to evaluated if odds should be adjusted, all the better. If odds are worse for everyone, that's also fine--let these companies show themselves to be the real predators that they are, and let them be scared of being preyed upon like their customers.

And then when you realize that the companies they’re giving money to provide absolutely nothing to them in return, but rather just create ever more devious ways to fleece them of their earnings, it just becomes downright sad and twisted. Our culture just keeps finding ways to sink lower and lower. If you wanna gamble, gamble, but it should be done how it’s always been done: quietly and discreetly, or in designated venues, to minimize its destructive and pervasive influence. Our culture should absolutely not be hi-fiving sharks and bookies in the spotlight like this for all the world to see; it’s despicable.

@coolcreep4 ай бұрын
I mean they CAN make a loss but just like any other business, if they run the business well they won't. The whole idea is that the losers pay the winners - their goal is to create betting lines that will get roughly even amounts of money on either side. That's why the line changes over time - if lots of people are betting one side, they'll improve the odds for the other side to get more money to even it out.

This further highlights the fact that morality and legality aren't mutually exclusive terms. Something once considered a degenerate act is suddenly advertised everywhere, and the only difference is that now it's making the right people money. As long as we're moving this way I can think of a few other things people continue to do despite being illegal that would instantly become safer if they were simply regulated. The proliferation of gangsters in the 1920's following Prohibition was no accident. I feel like driving people underground into circumstances where grotesque brutality, death, and disease thrives is decidedly more immoral than partaking in those non-violent actions deemed illegal themselves.

It seems too easy for criminal organizations to turn an insider into an asset (just like a gov't spy) who can either provide enough info to take advantage of, or are able to influence a player's performance (either knowingly or unknowingly) enough for the betting org to make a confident bet over the house odds. Once you have that advantage in place, you can start playing the numbers game knowing that while some bets will lose, the majority will win, thus creating a gauranteed ROI. From a criminal's pov, you almost don't want a gauranteed outcome for only one game but rather a small advantage over the course of the whole season(s).

Tbh athletes gambling is only really a problem if they are betting against themselves. Aiming for 100 yards in a game… great that’s your job. People might argue that there are specific situations in which interests can be misaligned and that’s true. But that’s always the case for athletes, their interests and the teams interests can’t be aligned perfectly. The issue is when there is an obvious conflict of interests (such as betting against yourself) or a strong enough reason to substantially change your play (if an WNBA player who shoots a couple 3’s a night bets she’s gonna make 8 in a game she’s probably going to play a little differently).
@mikebarnes229428 күн бұрын
Team members of professional athletic teams by necessity have inside information that is not privy to the general public. Even despite their best efforts there will always be games where the team has a lower than expected chance of winning due to things average people are not aware of - and on which normally betting players would refrain from wagering on. So even if they only ever bet on their team to win, there is still potential for athletes to inappropriately benefit from inside information.
