@@lucialamprey2690I spent some time working in Iran from 2000 to 2003. It was really interesting to listen to the locals take on the man. I was told that he was trying to modernise with a host of economic reforms, including land redistribution. But these were a direct challenge to the mullahs, which is why they fomented a revolution against him. A lot of people who supported the revolution at the time told me they wished they hadn’t. A question that gets to the heart of the complexities of Iranian identity and the Shah's own heritage! The Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was a member of the Pahlavi dynasty, which was a royal family of Persian (Iranian) descent. However, his ancestry was not entirely Iranian, and he had a mixed ethnic and cultural background. Here's a breakdown of the Shah's ancestry: 1. **Persian (Iranian) ancestry**: The Shah's paternal grandfather, Reza Shah Pahlavi, was a Persian from the Khorasan region of northeastern Iran. He was a member of the Qajar dynasty, which had ruled Iran from 1789 to 1925. 2. **Azerbaijani ancestry**: The Shah's mother, Tadj ol-Molouk, was from Azerbaijan, a region in northwestern Iran that has a significant Azerbaijani population. Her father was an Azerbaijani nobleman who had converted to Islam. 3. **Turkish ancestry**: The Shah's great-grandfather, Abdulhamid Mirza, was a Turkish immigrant who had come to Iran from Turkey in the late 19th century. He was a high-ranking officer in the Qajar army and married into the Persian aristocracy. 4. **Arabian ancestry**: There are also claims that the Shah's ancestors had Arabian roots, although this is not widely accepted by historians. As for whether the Shah was 100% Iranian, it's difficult to say. While he was born and raised in Iran and identified as Persian, his ancestry was not entirely Iranian. He had a mix of Persian, Azerbaijani, Turkish, and possibly Arabian roots. In Iran, the concept of ethnicity is often tied to language, culture, and geography. The Shah's Persian language and cultural upbringing were certainly Iranian, but his ancestry and heritage were more complex and multifaceted. It's worth noting that the Pahlavi dynasty was known for its efforts to promote a sense of Persian identity and to erase ethnic and linguistic differences within Iran. The Shah's government also promoted a policy of "One Nation, One Language" (yek-e jahan, yek-e zaban), which emphasized the unity of the Iranian nation and the importance of the Persian language. Overall, while the Shah's ancestry was not entirely Iranian, his cultural identity and sense of national belonging were deeply rooted in Persian culture and history.

How funny, cause I lived in Los Angeles during the 90s and had AOL Persian 6.0. Got it from a cereal box on CD-ROM, came with 30 free hours. Yes, we used to pay for internet by the hour rather than by the month. Luckily though the CDs with 30 free hours were distributed freely like mad. Theyd send them in the mail, even without you signing up for anything. Everyone I knew just had a stack of them and was able to use the internet for free for several years, until the digital millennium copyright act happened. AOL stopped offering the free hours, and quickly discovered people suddenly had zero interest in the CDs. Around the same time Legacy Napster got shut down, and suddenly the prospect in "burning CDs" lowered heavily in popularity, however soon after, DVD burners started to become affordable and available, and Napster-like fileshare networks started emerging out of the criminal corners of the net as the accelerated transition from dialup slowNet to high speed DSL (the first consumer internet type that was "on all the time" by default without costing extra or disrupting phone service.) and thus the interest in pirating skyrocketed when everyone realized they could now download files larger than 6mb mp3 files, and the software; tv series/movie sharing/downloading opportunities found a new spot up at the top, and would remain popular for a whole decade before hollywood would get triggered and start filing lawsuits to ISPs, who reacted by finding instances of using certain p2p or torrent softwares and send threatening yet not legally binding "warning letters" which I assume were nothing, due to me getting like 30 of them those few years it was happening. I cannot remember why I started this comment, I think it was gonna be a single sentencer, but I kinda drifted into memory lane and put it on cruise control. 🤷‍♂️

Six months later, I found myself in Tehran, Iran, working for the American telecommunications company that was poised to participate in the modernization of the whole country's telecom network. I spent over six months there and when I left, I was of the opinion that the Shah was a well respected monarch. Was supposed to return to the project in 1978, but then certain things happened. Seeing this interview again now, I'm still of the opinion that the Shah was an intelligent and savvy ruler who had the best interests of his country and people in mind.

It is so fascinating to watch Shah of Iran the way he was responding to Mike Wallace. his intellect, his grace, his choice of word. He was so much ahead of his time to pull his fellow Iranian whom most of them by that time were illiterate. now that I am in my 60s, I realize by that time, he wanted to do so much for the good of his Country, build a system to keep our nation in the right path after he was gone. May God Bless him. he is really been missed.

@@As.00a Hey my friend, I look forward to a time when all the nations in West Asia, (British phrase "Middle-East") will live in peace and harmony as the nations of Europe did after WW2. Part of the hostility between the two nations is of course due to the religious competition that has existed for the last 45 years. Obviously the great majority of Iranians are opposed to the regime in Iran. There are also more historical events that has left a bad taste in the history of Iran and the heart of the Iranian people and that has to do with the Islamic invasion of Persia in the 7th century and the consequent slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people by the hands of the Saracens. Somehow we have to cross that history and forgive, and learn to live in harmony. Of course the majority of Iranians love to live in harmony with Saudi Arabia.

It is wrong to blame one person, many people and many events caused the revolution in Iran, there was a wave of revolutions in those years and Iran was also caught in this wave, even human rights organizations gave wrong reports, and the newspapers They were printing wrong reports, because of his election slogan, Carter pressured the Shah to give more freedom to the people, the Shah was sick, ignorant people who did not understand the meaning of modernity rioted, educated people who wanted Iran to be a republic due to their education in the West, but They didn't even know the meaning of democracy, they just wanted to imitate, the media that kept talking against the Shah, it was a whole media war against the Shah, and I still don't understand the reason, I don't know how a reporter sees 80 dead as 4000 people. And he writes in his book, while he has no proof for his words and the cemetery declares the number of buried people to be eighty people, I don't understand how there are still some people who call the king a dictator and teach in the world's leading universities, while a king Can't be a dictator, still in the newspapers with the brazen lies They publish fifty years ago and slander the Shah, it was not Carter or the western countries that destroyed the Shah, some were journalists and intellectuals and the ignorant people of Iran, and at the head of them were the mullahs.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran from 1941 to 1979, was a complex figure with both positive and negative contributions to Iranian society. Here are some of the notable achievements and criticisms: **Positive contributions:** 1. **Modernization**: The Shah's government implemented significant modernization programs, including infrastructure development, education, and healthcare improvements. He invested in building roads, highways, airports, and seaports, which connected Iran to the global economy. 2. **Economic growth**: The Shah's government encouraged foreign investment, privatization, and industrialization, which led to rapid economic growth and a significant increase in Iran's GDP. 3. **Education and literacy**: The Shah's government made significant investments in education, leading to a rapid increase in literacy rates. By the 1970s, Iran had one of the highest literacy rates in the Middle East. 4. **Women's rights**: The Shah's government introduced reforms that improved women's rights, such as extending education and employment opportunities to women. 5. **International relations**: The Shah's government maintained good relations with many countries, including the United States, and was a key player in international organizations like the United Nations. **Negative contributions:** 1. **Authoritarian rule**: The Shah's government was authoritarian and repressive, with limited civil liberties and political freedoms. He used his security forces to suppress opposition and maintain power. 2. **Corruption**: The Shah's government was plagued by corruption, with high-ranking officials and their families accumulating vast wealth and power. 3. **Human rights abuses**: The Shah's security forces were responsible for numerous human rights abuses, including torture, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings. 4. **Oppression of minority groups**: The Shah's government was criticized for its treatment of minority groups, including the Kurds, Arabs, and Azerbaijanis, who faced discrimination and repression. 5. **Economic inequality**: While the Shah's government encouraged economic growth, it also exacerbated economic inequality, with a small elite controlling a significant portion of the country's wealth. 6. **Support for US interests**: The Shah's government was heavily influenced by the United States and supported American interests in the region, which led to widespread resentment among Iranians who felt their country was being exploited by foreign powers. 7. **Suppression of Islamic Revolution**: The Shah's government brutally suppressed the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to widespread violence and human rights abuses. In conclusion, the Shah of Iran had both positive and negative contributions to Iranian society. While he implemented significant modernization programs and economic growth, his authoritarian rule, corruption, and human rights abuses had a profound impact on the country's politics and society.

The Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was a complex figure with both positive and negative qualities. While he was known for his modernization efforts and economic development, his government was also criticized for its authoritarianism, human rights abuses, and repression of political dissent. Some of the criticisms of the Shah's government include: 1. **Torture and abuse**: The Shah's security forces were accused of using torture and other forms of physical abuse to extract confessions and crush dissent. 2. **Arbitrary arrests and imprisonment**: The Shah's government was known for making arbitrary arrests and imprisoning political opponents, journalists, and activists without trial. 3. **Killings and disappearances**: The Shah's government was responsible for numerous killings and disappearances of political opponents, as well as extrajudicial killings by the SAVAK secret police. 4. **Repression of opposition**: The Shah's government suppressed political opposition, including left-wing groups, nationalists, and Islamists, often through violent means. 5. **Censorship and media control**: The Shah's government controlled the media and censored publications, suppressing dissenting voices and critical reporting. Some notable examples of the Shah's human rights abuses include: 1. **The 1953 Tudeh Party purge**: The Shah's government arrested and executed thousands of members of the Tudeh Party, a socialist organization that was seen as a threat to the monarchy. 2. **The 1963 National Front crackdown**: The Shah's government arrested and imprisoned thousands of members of the National Front, a coalition of opposition parties that included figures like Mossadegh and Karim Sanjabi. 3. **The 1970s Kurdistan conflict**: The Shah's government launched a military campaign against Kurdish rebels in western Iran, resulting in widespread human rights abuses, including forced displacement, torture, and killings. However, it's also important to note that the Shah's government made efforts to address some human rights issues, such as: 1. **Establishing a human rights commission**: In 1976, the Shah's government established a Human Rights Commission to monitor and promote human rights in Iran. 2. **Introducing reforms**: The Shah's government introduced some reforms aimed at improving human rights, such as expanding education and healthcare opportunities for women. In conclusion, while the Shah's government was responsible for significant human rights abuses and repression, it's also important to recognize that his government made some efforts to address these issues. Ultimately, the legacy of the Shah's human rights record is complex and multifaceted, reflecting both his authoritarian tendencies and his efforts to modernize Iran.

The Shah of Iran's government introduced significant reforms that improved women's rights and status in Iranian society. Here are some reasons why women, particularly those from the middle and upper classes, may have supported the Shah: 1. **Increased education and employment opportunities**: The Shah's government invested in education, particularly for girls, which led to a significant increase in female literacy rates. Women gained access to higher education, and many entered the workforce, which was previously dominated by men. 2. **Legal reforms**: The Shah's government passed laws that granted women more rights and freedoms. For example, the 1967 Family Protection Law allowed women to obtain divorce without their husband's consent, and the 1973 Law on Women's Rights granted women equal rights in marriage and inheritance. 3. **Increased social mobility**: The Shah's government's economic growth and modernization efforts created new job opportunities for women, allowing them to break free from traditional roles and gain greater financial independence. 4. **Greater autonomy**: Women who were educated and employed under the Shah's government often gained more autonomy and independence, as they were no longer reliant solely on their husbands or fathers for financial support. 5. **Cultural and social changes**: The Shah's government promoted Western-style values and customs, which encouraged greater social freedom and equality for women. This was particularly true in urban areas, where women were more likely to adopt modern lifestyles and attitudes. 6. **Access to healthcare**: The Shah's government invested in healthcare infrastructure, which provided women with better access to medical care, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health. 7. **Influence of Western culture**: The Shah's government's promotion of Western culture and values helped to reduce the stigma associated with women working outside the home or pursuing higher education. However, it's essential to note that not all women supported the Shah's government. Many women, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds or rural areas, continued to face significant barriers and restrictions in their daily lives. Additionally, the Shah's government was criticized for its treatment of women who did not conform to traditional gender roles or who were involved in political activism. The Shah's government's reforms were also seen as a way to maintain his own power and legitimacy, as he used the gains made by women as a symbol of his modernizing and progressive agenda. Some critics argue that the Shah's government exploited the gains made by women to further its own interests and maintain control over Iranian society. In conclusion, while many women may have benefited from the Shah's government's reforms, it's essential to recognize that these reforms were not universally accepted or enjoyed. The experiences of women during this period varied significantly depending on factors such as class, education, occupation, and geographic location.

Personally, I believe that he was truly the greatest amongst the great leaders of Iran throughout Iran's history. I am truly ashamed of how many Iranians reacted in those days. His majesty was not only excellently educated, but he was also tremendously kind, amazingly wise and in addition to this, he had a clear sense of humour. He is answering the questions with the utmost sincerity and let us not forget that all the things which he did for his country (as well as the Iranian people) were undeniably great and outstanding. Shame on those who defied his majesty! May he rest in peace. Undoubtley, he is always alive in our hearts.

Two major facts to keep in mind: 1. SAVAK was a boyscout group compared to the secret police of any communist country or those of the average Middle Eastern nation. If SAVAK was half as fearsome as the opposition pretended it was, the revolution would have never gotten off ground. 2. Iran shared a physical border with USSR and had its territory occupied by the Red Army as late as 1947. Shah had been a target of multiple assassinations and had also seen two of his prime minsters assassinated in the years leading up to and immediately after the formation of SAVAK. Throughout his entire reign the Shah had to contend with radical Leftist, Islamist, and Islamo-Leftist (!) militant groups all vying to seize power through coups, revolution and assassination. Given these facts, *not* forming a secret police would have been downright idiotic for any Iranian head of state during that period. SAVAK was simply a necessity.

It's interesting watching this so many decades after the interview. Wallace talks about corruption in Iran as though it is unique to that country. We have all seen the financial corruption in the US, both within the political system and in finance and investments arenas. For example, Madoff, Elizabeth Holmes and Sam Bankman-Fried, to name just 3!
