Because it might not matter to you, but brown black and lgbtq and poor people often intersecting demographics, suddenly got voices from not often having them. Realize in the 60s and 70s a lot of these groups had no real platforms. It’s pretty awful social media and it has given folx voices who normally don’t have them. So I guess what’s the best move?

CBS covered the 2016 Campaign. Two Candidates were very popular: Trump and Bernie. CBS amd the networks talked about one Candidate's popularity but not about his background, the other Candidate was ignored completely. It is disingenuous for CBS' 60 Minutes to run a story about disinformation when Trump's background _predicted_ his Presidency whereas Bernie has a long political background and has consistently fought for the Working Class. Remember, it was Superdelegates that made Hillary Clinton the Democratic Nominee. CBS and ALL the major networks are not on the high ground here. They have themselves to ALSO blame for public discourse.

It's a real shame that 60 minutes has chosen to portray what is happening in America as "people's ideals clashing" instead of showing The People what is really going on: that the former president stole secret documents that put American Citizens and our Allies in danger. That the former president falsely claimed the election was rigged simply because he couldn't accept loosing. That thee former president let loose a mob of brainwashed maniacs upon thee Capitol building and that they almost killed this Nations servants.

Yeah. Many imagine the social media problem to be a technical one or some maliciously designed master plan. But all it's doing it maximizing user engagement for revenue. It's our own basic human nature to pay attention to outrage and outrageousness, to align into tribal thinking and mob mentality. The "system" is simply amplifying our most dramatic reactions. Sadly, cute kittens are about the only benign aspect that rises from all this. Our modern world needs more lolcats and less crazy.

Nobody is entitled to the status quo. There is nothing sacred about the status quo. The status quo IS an extremist position. I am sick & tired of using labels like "extreme" or "extremist" or "hatred" or "hate speech" to dismiss or to refuse to address someone's ideas POVs, without investigation, or deny them power in government. Fairness & justice are what matter & what should be optimized. NEVER just law & order for law's sake. Law & order IS government IS communism. It is just as stupid and fascist for anarchists to be fanatically anticommunist as it is for communists to be fanatically anti-anarchist/pro-communism/pro law & order just for law & order's sake. Government/laws are just tools. When they fail, don't use them.

Morons and idiots got to stop throwing around words like "anger" and "hate/hatred/hate speech" as an excuse to silence/ignore/deny others freedom of speech. Those words alone tell us NOTHING about whether that anger or hatred is justified. e.g. Worker unions, the poor, prisoner rights advocates, Antinatalists, climate activists, Animal Rights Vegans, Atheists, Alien believers+UFO disclosure activists are JUSTIFIED in being anger, enraged and hating hypocritical pro-status quo conservaturds who have oppressed/silenced their causes - IMPORTANT causes - for decades.

Why isn't there a senate committee dedicated solely to social media and it's engagement-based algorithm?! Why doesn't this dominate news coverage? Our economy, public health, climate, democracy, and frankly even civilization itself are all threatened and debilitated by how social media amplifies our worst human natures. None of these would be such a serious crisis if not for our echo chambers and divided response to these fundamentally common causes.

@@lantrick It's true governments (in America and elsewhere) are already so hyperpartisan that it barely functions thanks to our respective echo chambers. But that doesn't explain why no one is even trying. I would at least expect to see individual politicians focusing their campaigns and town halls around this issue. They should be competing to best present the problem and possible solutions to the public and on the debate floor. A skilled politician could raise the alarm and propose at least some regulations that both conservatives and liberals would find common cause around. Perhaps just to shed light on the problem and educate the public. But I can't think of even one who focuses on this more than an occasional criticism.

Great piece. The harms to our social interactions and political discourse are not just happening in the US but worldwide. A must-read on exactly this topic - The Chaos Machine, by Max Fisher. I stumbled over it on Apple Books - it's a scathing attack on the very design of these platforms, the ethos those behind them do business by, and an eye opening account of the harms done over the past decade or two, both on the individual brain level and the societal level. The book is written by a New York Times investigative journalist, based on dozens if not hundreds of insider interviews, and thoroughly evidenced. Cannot recommend enough.

An interesting commentary on the "gladiator effect" of social media polarizing everybody. What it doesn't address, is the underlying issues which Americans continue to ignore which have made them angry in the first place. Policing social media isn't going to do anything. As long as Americans try to avoid real problems and make a specialty out of lying to each other, things will only get worse. That is the real issue.

I think we need to acknowledge our part in all this. If people choose to be angry, abusive etc we can't just blame SM. We clearly have that in us and SM is simply giving us the drug we wanted. We can't blame an app no one forces us to click on. Yes, we know it's skewered but we also know we have to control ourselves. We can't demand 'freedoms and free speech' then complain when we abuse it. We are allowing it and should be the ones to act.

You’re missing the crucial point: social media platforms are not dumb pipes. They’re deliberately designed to emotionally engage us, because emotional charge will make us spend more time on the platforms. They’re very interested in maximising those posts that will enrage us. The apps “no one forces us to click on” are core communications platforms for the younger generations, they’re their “TV” like TV was for us in the 80s and 90s. And they employ psychologists (like myself) in designing software to deliberately be addictive.

I am sure that is true & I love that statement but I have seen more people in my age group which is the mid 50's that has been radicalized and most of our parents are the actual boomers. It is probably because I see more people on Facebook in my own age bracket but I am still shocked at how many people I grew up with and even hung out with who have turned into rabid political know it alls. Most of them haven't read a book in decades but believe every dam Meme that they see. They no longer even care for facts as long as they have a list of friends who agree with them and see Memes & pages that say what they want to hear even if it is false info. I was raised in a time period where we were encouraged to be open minded, listen to different viewpoints and I/we never made friends based on viewpoints, especially political viewpoints. Many people from my generation & other ones as well set their friends list up so they mostly only have people that have the same exact political leanings as they do. They have created their own echo chamber so they never have to even see or hear a view that doesn't agree with their own views. They only watch the 24/7 news outlets that agree with their side & only visit and like social media sites that only agree with their views. They then claim it is everyone else who is blinded by propaganda and many love to use terms like "they drank the kool-aid, They are a bunch of sheep, etc... All it takes is a Meme with a false narrative or straight up lie made by anyone & then large groups of people actually believe what the false Meme says and they can't be convinced otherwise even when shown facts that prove it to be 100% wrong. It is so frustrating!! I dislike both parties equally & refuse to pick my friends by their political viewpoints. I no longer discuss politics or social issues on Facebook. I was so burnt out by the whole thing after the 2020 election I didn't even log onto Facebook for over a year. I only comment or reply to posts here on KZbin but only do so occasionally and avoid anything that remotely resembles an argument.

The fact that the Chinese version of tic-toc is so different, makes it obvious that the version sent here is weaponized. I love the opium analogy but wonder how many viewers know the history behind it. Opium was introduced to China by European traders because there were few items from Europe that the Chinese would trade for. Once addicted, demand for more was assured.

Agreed. Remember the job of the news is to sell news. Social media may have perfected the model, but it didn’t invent it. To be fair, the consumer has been driving this sort of thing since Bible times: “Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.” Proverbs 26:20

One very misleading thing in this video about TikTok is that ByteDance only designed this "healthy" version for kids in China voluntarily. Last year, the Chinese government issued an updated law on teenage protection that covers online content. As a consequence, social media platforms had to establish protective rules. For example, no teenager can play games for more than two hours or so and only during the weekends or holidays (the exact numbers I forget). Thus, it is not that ByteDance intentionally "poisons" kids in other countries; like all profit-seeking firms, they only stop maximizing their profits while facing harsh regulations.

Stopping social media in its tracks isn't the answer. Funny thing about technology is its tendency to outpace human morality & common sense. We're always playing catch-up. But catch-up we will.

The important lesson that people will get from the polarization of America (liberals vs conservative) is that no side is always right. Sometimes, its the conservatives that are right and sometimes, its the liberals. We have to rely on our wise judgements in order to decide what's the right thing to do. The powers that be will always give people something that will divide and destroy them from within but they dont realize that from these challenges is that Americans will become wiser and think more deeply about things. So for the powers that be, keep doing that and the people will emerge to be wiser.

I dumped all social media (except KZbin) 8 years ago and don’t miss it at all! I do wish serious communications did not use these platforms for updates-about 2 years ago I had to re-sign up for Twitter just to get wild fire and road condition notifications in my neighborhood as that was the only way to get that info and many neighborhoods use things like Nextdoor or FB to communicate updates. I wish we had better alternatives.

By watching this video, you’ve probably already realized that something isn’t quite right with your social media habits. But don’t be fooled-KZbin is social media too. If you’re spending a lot of time watching videos, especially so-called 'news' on any network, you may still be trapped in the same cycle, just in a different form. You’re not out of the woods yet. In fact, KZbin isn’t much better than other platforms-though TikTok might take the crown as the worst offender.

As part of the older generation who is on Tik Tok, Instagram & Twitter, I scroll through many contents that I don't agree with. The same goes for KZbin. I as the viewer have the right by choice and not by popular demand to what I watch. Now I am from the generation that was raised watching Cable and music videos. We had and made our choices. I think it's our personal duty to teach and learn with and towards future generations. I personally think this lacking nowadays.

The best thing that happened to me getting hacked and losing my Facebook account before the presidential election was how much better I felt being unable to witness the drama that escalated. I felt like I went through a withdrawal at first, but it was very helpful breaking the cycle of not having any control of tuning into all the hopeless, paralyzing feelings I focused on. Especially all the worst conspiracy theories and fears of the being victimized by my own irrational thinking patterns. I still had this fear of everyone I loved dieing from covid. 2 weeks later, I was ready to start planning moving from my community, and seeing how many people I live around had also been tuned into the same things and not being able to talk about anything else but politics or covid. Social media divides and conquers and brainwashes definitely on purpose. It helps the politicians have much easier jobs and ability to predict the results by paying for typical advertising and probably having typical algorithms with proven tactics developed. Everyone has typecast themselves by psychological patterns. Recognising this and being aware of how easily it is to be manipulated is the only thing I can see to be less susceptible of being manipulated. But also not being too confident that it there isn't something I don't know.

I don't agree with this. I have participated in social media for decades and I have had no issues mentally or emotionally. The problem is poor parenting and poor education. Disconnecting from one of the few most honest sources of news in the world like TikTok is a horrible idea. Without TikTok many people in the states would not have known about what was happening locally or even in the world because main stream media fails to cover those stories. Without social media we would not have come to learn about instances where police officers abuse their power. There is simply too much at steak to be blaming the tools. We do not blame the gun for a crime. We blame the wielder. People should be more educated about how to navigate social media in a way that is healthy and educational. Babysitting laws/policies are proof of stagnating development.

They're using a psychological method called Classic Conditioning, which was pioneered by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov in a 1897 experiment where a dog was trained to salivate everytime a bell rang because it thought it would receive water. The response of the dog was the same whether or not water was given as long as the bell rang. The elite extremist are using the same Classical Conditioning approach to train people to react a certain way everytime they see certain words or images pop up on their phones and tablets. It may get you to react by buying something when exposed to stimulants like target advertising, or make you copy a certain fashion or trending item everytime you see something that's gone viral. But the dark side to this Classical Conditioning is that it gets you to hate the opposition of your own personal and political beliefs everytime you are exposed to a stimulant like a campaign ad or a news headline. So much so that it encourages certain people to elicit an extreme responses like go on an all out mass murdering rampage against people who opposes their personal and/or political beliefs. So by cutting off the access to these stimulants which is essentially the free and unlimited access to the internet and social media platforms, it gives you nothing to elicit the Classical Pavlovian response to. The alternative to cutting off the free access to internet is to have a government oversight agency make sure every content posted online and through social media is non-biased, and free of hateful thinking. In order for that to work, government oversights must be non-political, or not politically biased which is not were hearing is going on even within our own FBI agency, let alone other government agencies out there.
