This procedure is incomplete. The last step is (if doing the set up this way, which is not the way I do it) is to (after rendering the instrument completely level) loosen the tripod screw and slide the instrument over the point. It "looked" like it was over the point when the instrument wasn't leveled, so leveling it will pull the laser dot or crosshair/circle off the point. Slide the instrument over the point, and check that you are still level. If not, rinse and repeat. Now you are set up. A better procedure is to set up the tripod over the point, and check that it is close with a plumb bob, not with your eyeball looking through the tripod, since your eyeball doesn't really sense "plumb" terribly well. Then attach the instrument. Then level it up (as explained in this video). Then turn on your laser dot (or use optical plummet) to slide the instrument across the tripod head until it is directly over the point. Remember, when the instrument isn't level, the laser or optical plummet isn't plumb. I can set up very quickly this way, and it's dead easy to learn.
