I was able to meet Lee James shortly after he won the silver medal at the 76 Olympics, he is from my home town of Albany Georgia, and he inspired me to start my own weightlifting career after that meeting, but I never got to the Pinnacle of success that James had, but I did win the American Junior weightlifting championship in 1979 at heavyweight 😊

Hamp’s record is the first senior men’s record in 55 years. I hope I don’t have to wait another 55 for the next one. In 2079 I’ll be 119 years old. I don’t like those odds.

Schemansky participated in 4 Olympics, Silver in London 1948, Gold in Helsinki 1952, missed 1956 due to back surgery, Bronze in Rome 1960 and Bronze in Tokyo 1964. He continued to lift until 1968 and retired since he could make the Olympic team. He was 42 years old when he competed in Tokyo 1964.

Irawan was able to beat back his younger countryman which not automatic. Now he has a reasonable chance of a fifth Olympic medal though I give the inside track to Li, Morris, and Massida. If he’s able to accomplish that it would be quite extraordinary though not quite as exceptional as 3 golds which has been achieved 5 times in the men’s category. Just competing in 5 Olympics is quite rare. He’s never won gold however.

42:30 Could someone explain why Saputra Ricko was "no lift" twice? I don't know much about the sport.
@thecasualtheologian79008 ай бұрын
Essentially when he hit the bottom of the snatch, you can see his right arm buckle and bend a bit. This is called a "press out" and even though he technically stood the lift up, the judges would look at his arm and see the buckle and call that a no lift because he didnt hit the bottom position fully "locked out". Its definitely a tough break and very unfortunate!
@jonathanzoellick86024 ай бұрын
Yes, it was because his right arm popped in and out in the bottom position, and is considered a press out 😊

With what and how is that platform constructed to take those weights dropping on it many times

Looking at his body frame, I'm not sure Morris can stay at this weight class as he gets older and bulks up but if so he will be a top contender for many years.
@JohnDoherty-dl2fz7 ай бұрын
Lancent. I’m sure he’s going to go 67 right after Olympics. He has already competed at 67 for a couple internationals late last year-weighed 66+ at Dohar. Hopefully 2028 LA will include the 67 kg class.

hey everyone, new fan here who usually only watches the women's sessions (I am a female!). I am wondering about some very different issues I see in this category, namely the side walking and losing balance/strength on their left (I assume non-dominant side). I can't recall seeing this often in the women's categories at all. Does someone have an explanation or a theory about it? Thanks!

If Hamp the Champ gets a medal it will be the first US male medal since 1984 when we got a silver and bronze. That was however the year of the Soviet bloc boycott who had their own games. A much forgotten lifter Lee James in 1976 won silver behind David Rigert in the 90 kg class (165-197.5) the last time a US lifter competed with everyone there. Yeah I know about North Korea this year but they gotta play by the rules like everyone else. Lee James was a great lifter but only for a couple years because of knee problems just 2 years later at the age of 24.

And unfortunately Lee James just passed away this year 😢

Why do lifters go down in weight class? When they're no longer competitive in the higher one?
@SomeSeriousWeight8 ай бұрын
Some classes are Olympic while others are not as such some think it's easier to cut than it is to bulk. Or other reasons. For example Akbar Djuraev bulked to the supers but got back issues that cutting to the 102s helped with.
@JohnDoherty-dl2fz8 ай бұрын
Plus Akbar is a lot more competitive at 102 than as a super. He can sacrifice dessert for the next few months in order to have a good chance at a medal at Paris. He was unlikely to get one in the supers.

the problem with releasing a video of an event that happened month ago is that you lost interest over time - i was itching to watch these closer to the timing of the event but only got highlights of one particular lift. didn't even bother watching this - just wanted to comment .

lol doesn’t really seem like a super exciting category when you have 300 misses at 130. Glad to see Hamp the champ putting US back in the running though. Pee Wee Hermpton
