I waited to age 70 to collect to raise my monthly amount. It went up $600 a month by waiting. I also kept working to bank as much as possible, leaving the workforce at age 72. Being divorced in my 60's necessitated this decision, giving me a livable amount monthly.

The avg. American is having a tough time, I know I am not alone. There are others in same position as me. By certain statistics: 22% of americans have no retirement savings. 64% are worried that they will not have money in latter years while 47% of adults who are not yet retired think they have to work part-time in retirement. How can I best grow the 100k I have saved seperately outside retirement access which of course had depleted over the years?

When you sign up for a Medicare Supplement & Drug plan, make sure you ask if there is a drug plan with no premium. I paid $20-35 each month for 6 years, but discovered a no premium plan. You must do the math to see what your yearly cost would be with several plans. My no premium plan ended up being $200-400 less per year.

Its purely a matter of opinion. Which differs between all people. Who have different financial situations. The later you retire the more money you receive. If you want less money, are disabled, etc. Yes. Its best in your situation to retire earlier. If you're healthy and employed contributing to Social Security. Retiring later is better. I will retire somewhere between 67-70.

With the trust fund estimated to be depleted by 2035 or sooner, a question that many of us who are eligible (but have been holding off filing until FRA or later to file) is would it make more sense to file now, taking less per month, but knowing that changes (possible reductions to future benefit amounts) will need to be made? Considering the political climate, I could see where it may be better to take less for a longer period before possible reductions are implemented and not risk waiting until FRA or later.

I will be 62 and I am really considering retiring right after my 62nd birthday and moving back to my country of birth where I will be able to afford life even with less than what I would get at my full retirement age of 67. My father lived with less than half of what I will be getting and he lived to be 89. My father retired in his early 70th birthday. He received his SS for at least 19 year, although his last 3 years living were the hardest for him. He didn't enroll in Medicare because he never planned to use since wasn't planning to return to this country anymore and instead paid cash for medical care back home. In a way he saved more money to Medicare here, just like many people who never applied. I plan to apply and come over for medical care whenever possible, although medical care is cheaper where I come from and since I'm also hold citizenship of where I was born, I will be eligible to receive senior government medical care, similar to medicare here, but without the penalty if I don't enroll on time.

So now I applaud those who don't feel they owe their lives to a rich CEO, but have no clue what to advise them. The aide recieved a raise to 25,000 the following year from 19,000 they kept my check till payed off, I just resigned 😢 because it wasn’t worth it being my retirement age isn’t here yet. The school year is only 9 months with off in the summer but we get a 4 check payment as if you worked when in fact the remove that pay from your checks which already taxed. It just became too confusing. Apparent when I resigned I forgot to let them know in January that I was leaving in May so that they wouldn’t take for the whole year. They took it anyway. They sent a letter that they miscalculated my income and owed me but I didn’t receive payback. So I gave up😢

I will be taking my Social Security Benefits this coming March/2025 at age 64, my question has to do with my son who is 35 yrs old and was born with cerebral palsy and cannot work do to his visibility. He has been collecting SSI since he turned 18 and lives with me and I was told he may be able to collect SSDI off of my Social Security. Is this true

dealing with those now. SSI = welfare. SSDI = Disability (you or child/disabled child) based on parent's income history. My daughter should get a note soon from SSDI to collect up to 1/2 of my SS (which I just started). She didn't qualify for SSI cause she has a few thousand bucks in the bank. SSI tops out at $900-ish/mo....SSDI tops out at much higher amount...over $3000/mo. A confusing mess....

Yes, sign up for Medicare Part A (free) and Part B (depends on your income-starts at $187/mo). Tricare acts as your wrap-around coverage. You DO NOT need Medicare Advantage OR MEDIGAP supplements. Nor do you need an RX plan as Tricare covers your prescriptions.

Question - When I retire, my daughter can claim extra benefits (currently on disability) however, Social Security needs documentation showing she was disabled before I think the age of 18. She’s 46 and I cannot get any records going back that far. Is there a way to bypass this? Thank you.

Everything I have is paid off and get a lot of Senior benefits, most of my Friends have passed away so retire as soon as you can .No sense making your boss more money 😁

Dr Ed, I have a question about the high 35, I plan to retire at age 63 at that point I will have worked 45 years and I will have enough pension/401k to live comfortably without SS, If I wait until 67/70 to start taking SS does the 4/7 years of not working get figured into 35 years???? I cannot find this information anywhere.

Is he drawing his SS benefit yet? You can’t draw spousal benefits until he starts drawing. Also, you would only be eligible if 1/2 of his check is more than your benefit.😊

I'm 61 and he is 62. He is working a full time job. (Long haul trucker with a physical leg injury)Forced divorced because of my disabilities and medical issues. (together 45 years.) So, if he wants to take early retirement he would be penalized and still be paying taxes in with his weekly check? He's tired of being gone all the time. :( He basically lives in his truck. We just don't know if he should take early retirement and be penalized. He makes about 80,000 a year and they take a lot of federal tax out. He gets penalized and they take tax out of each check as well as Medicare? So, Isn't that a form of double dipping? There are at least 7 people that paid in all their lives and didn't live to see a dime. Passed in their late 50's to 66. I also live across from a funeral home in a small community and there are so many that pass before full retirement it's unreal. So with all of that it's a roulette wheel on whether anyone ever live long enough to collect a dime. In our view it's getting quite rare

I'm not going to take my benefit early, and there's a good reason why. My wife is 20 years younger than I am and is likely to outlive me by a significant number of years. Her own SS benefit will be far smaller than mine so she'll be using mine when she reaches retirement age. I want to maximize her survivor benefits after I'm gone, and that means waiting until 70 to take my SS benefit. I'm currently 61 and healthy. I expect to live a long time yet, so I believe I will also ultimately see more dollars by waiting, even though it will take longer to get them.

@DrEdWeir when you were referring to delaying benefits once you've reached your full retirement age you can delay... Are U referring to someone already collecting SS & decides they want to receive FULL benefits, so they call to STOP receiving & request to delay them until 70? NEVERMIND.. I listened again & answered my own question 😂

I want to take ss at 62 in 2025.I have filled income tax jointly with my spouse in the past. He has W2 I have 1099. I make under the current limit for SS but if I were to take SS this year while working and file jointly with my spouse does SSA consider this as my total income thus putting me over the SS limit for my drawl? If yes, Then what do I do?

It's not complicated. SO much nonsense out there among financial folks about when to start Soc security payments. You receive the same amount no matter the age you start. Start sooner get paid less over a longer period of time. Start later and receive more over a shorter period. The fly in the ointment is death. If you start later you risk death and losing all the funds you and your employer contributed over 40 plus years. The gov't takes it.

Do I have to have the divorce papers to claim ex spouse benefits? What do they need so I can claim benefits from ex spouse?
@DebLindley-xg8gz
@DebLindley-xg8gz 8 күн бұрын
The requirements for IEDS (Independently Entitled Divorced Spouse) benefits are, you and your ex spouse have to both be at least 62 years old. Be single if the ex is still alive. Collecting on your own record first. His PIA (Primary Insurance Amount) has to be 2x's yours. You will need the original Marriage Certificate and Divorce Decree with the seals on them or stamps. The SSA will let you know what's acceptable.

Average life expectancy in US is 77. If you have a pension plan and savings you should retire as soon as you can. If you are relying on social security you should wait until full retirement age to draw from it and continue to work a couple of years full time if you are fit and bank the money. If you are in not so great health work part time and draw social security at full retirement age.

If I collect benefice on 70 I get that 8% ,in year after 67 ,but don’t I’m losing three years money that I didn’t collect? Suppose I get 1000 a month and for three years until 70 I get 8% a year this means I get 80 dollars a month on 68. 160 dollars a month on 69 and 240 dollars a month on 70 .so I will make 680 dollars extra a year on 68 years of age and 1600 dollars extra on 69 and 2400 dollars on 70 but I’m losing 1000 dollars a year on 68 1000 dollars on 69 and 1000 a year on 70 ? If I’m correct I’m losing 3000 dollars on those three years if I don’t collect the benefice to gain 4,680 for those three years if I didn’t collect the benefice .Please if I’m wrong correct me .Great video thanks!
