I was wonderin just how much trouble is the Dirt Rooster in. I had this unsettling memory of a mean junk yard dog when she informed him that was her cooler. That was June and he is still with us which can only lead to the conclusion that not only did he return the cooler cleaned and sterilized but he cleaned the kitchen the bathroom, mowed the lawn painted the house washed and had her car detailed and then rubbed her feet. Now we now why he took such a long break. That hunny do list got a tad lengthy.

I just remembered something.. in the summer there would be a bunch of bees gathering around open trash cans around gas station. I use to drive around until I found a gas station without so many bees.. one day I had no choice. I needed fuel. I complained to the cashier.. you need to spray for bees out there.. it's illegal to kill bees in Nebraska. Not only is it illegal to kill bees, also, illegal to pick wild flowers. This is a farming state. Wild flowers attract more bees to the crops. We need them.. period. 😁 I started educating and descencitizing myself this last spring. Now, I love and respect honey bees.😁

Sometimes during summer months, when outside, I would catch both bumblebees and honey bees in a water bottle (that was dry inside, of course), and let them feed off of a mix of sugar and water, before letting them go, and use that opportunity to get some good photos, and it really is neat seeing the proboscis extended, watching the bee suck it up, and really a testament to how gentile they can be that I let them do it on my hand, and feel no fear about being stung.

I love ALL of your videos. My husband and I watch them religiously. We are in WA state and it is very cold this time of year. We have moved our two hives up on our porch to keep them out of the weather and for a little more warmth. My question is how many bees should I expect to lose? I watch the front of the hives and see dead ones (I realize that is normal) but when should I become concerned? I feed them with sugar and check on them for activity by lifting the lid only to feed due to the cold. Thank you in advanced.

You're going to lose a few through winter but as long as they have a food source the cluster can reach it's really up to them and not much you can do at this point except keep mice out of them and be ready when spring comes around. Sounds like you're doing the right things already.

The live bees that are collected don't bring poison into the new hive and any comb that is transferred stays in brood boxes so no honey is ever extracted from that comb but poisons off gas over short periods of time and if there is any in the comb it is quickly degraded to nothing or covered up.

I am form North Mississippi and have been using full bottom screened as you showed us on one of your videos and they do the trick. However, If the partial works just as well, I might change up simply for the connivance of the pan. Bought pans are cheap at sams but on the full bottoms, I have to custom make each pan. to fit. Rooster. Really enjoy your videos, and have a question not really pertinent to this video, but certainly to others. When you use rubber bands to hold comb in your frames from cut outs, do the bees repair and build new comb right over the top of the rubber bands? If so does that create problems for you down the road when you harvest honey, or divide for new hives? Just always been curious. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
@628DirtRooster6 жыл бұрын
Those typically end up being brood boxes so honey extraction isn't usually an issue but the bees chew through most of the rubber bands and drag them out of the hive. Any that are left are easy to remove even if comb is built over them.

Sad to say I sataryed warching ur videos along with other KZbin's bee channels and y'all got me so excited about bees that i joinwd my local bee club and got some hives of my own. I live in a trailor park so I can't exactly have alot. Long story short I think i've lost interest in them. Haven't done an inspection in like 2 months cause of the weather. Rain or cold or both. I thought one of my 2 hives were in danger of collasping but when I started feeding they prove me wrong. Saw them bringing pollen i Both hives so that's good. Had 3 bur donated a hive to mcneeae university. I guess I qas just wondering if u ever went through phases were u weren't that?intreated in bees and if so does it come back. Or am I just lazy.

I do go through spells where I get burned out, disinterested and don’t do inspections for two or three months but at some point I get back in there and the fun of it all comes back.

@@628DirtRooster that's very good to know. Thought all was lost lol. I was hoping to get a nice dry day to straighten my yard up but its started raining again today. I try to keep them dry and fed but havent done much else. Hopefully spring will renew all.

When you set up the new colony will there be any poison contamination by the bees or saved brood?

I get so pissed when I go remove a person's hive and I find 4 or 5 cans of flea bombs underneath it... I had to throw out about 60 lbs of honey the last time I did that. I told the guy he just wasted about $500 by poisoning them.
@628DirtRooster6 жыл бұрын
The ones I can't stand are the ones that I can smell poison in but nobody knows nothing. Must have been a Keebler elf that snuck in and sprayed them. What's funny though is they usually start talk about bees and telling me what they know about how much we need the bees and how healthy raw honey is. Then I offer them all the honey from their hive and all of the sudden none of them like honey. Gee I wonder why. Could it be because you just shot two cans of roach poison in the hive entrance?
@MasterKenfucius6 жыл бұрын
@@628DirtRooster That's a freaggin' genius idea to offer the honey to them! And you're right. Honey does absorb odors in the air, so if it stinks like Raid, then keep your eyes open. You know what... I would be inclined to charge them MORE to remove a hive that has been sprayed. That's now putting my life in danger.

Hey Dirtchicken, spend all the time you can with your dad. "We" are getting old and our dads have been winding down for far longer than we have, at least you can get along with yours, enjoy it.. Some of us were born into families in which our dads selected one of the kids to hate from childhood, no amount of trying can fix that in him, we will never get what you have there..... It is obvious he is tired, I suspect you have more than noticed so this is as much for others as anything. I have watched many I grew up with go home lately, well more like for years now. I keep telling people we cannot avoid that, all we can do is make sure that our loved ones are saved and that we know they are headed for the correct endgame destination. That is one of the things me and the kids love seeing in Mr Ed's ( Jeff Horchoff ) videos is his acknowledgement of our lord. TBH I think time is winding down for us all. Anyways, this was an immediate observation I made and felt moved to comment on.

I can't believe that company didn't know what kind of bees these were. I don't know much about bees but I can tell a honey bee from a wasp. What a bunch of dorks. You would think with their knowledge of insects that they would know to respect and treat HB's with care. They are a sacred little creature. No other bee or creature creates a life sustaining food like that. The lady was probably reacting to the pollen?
