Hi Martin, I am a heating engineer. To make this system safe the solid fuel side must be open to atmosphere (open vented system), and normally open valves must be used. Linking together a solid fuel heat source and a boiler is possibly the most complicated domestic heating system going, not only the plumbing but also the wiring. You can run into all sorts of problems like tanks boiling over, huge amounts of condensation on the heat exchanger that could ruin your stove, and at worst an explosion that could rip the house apart. I massively respect your work and think you're doing a great job, but I would highly recommend getting professionals in with specific experience on solid fuel heating systems for this one, most of this stuff is beyond your average plumber! It will absolutely pay off to have it done right the first time.
@danthompson8212

I don't know much about electric boilers, but I would imagine you could run into problems running them on a low pressure open vented system, low pressure systems are also less efficient. The best way around this would be hydronic separation of the two systems, and a neutraliser.

I am a plumber by trade in Canada, a fully qualified journeyman with decades of experience and I agree one hundred percent. Heating systems should not be designed or installed by amateurs, they are incredibly dangerous, and will kill you in your sleep, and the dangers are often very easy to misunderstand or to overlook. It is a place to pay for professionals, and also to soak up as much knowledge from them as possible so you will know if something is wrong. heating systems almost seem to want to murder human beings with carbon monoxide, and it requires a lot of knowledge to set things up, and a fair bit to maintain systems that will not manage to murder you in your sleep. Yes I am being a bit over the top, but the dangers are very very real.

It's good to hear the experts say "Get an expert!", because that's just what I, as a diy-guy, was thinkin. But in principle I like the idea of a very well insulated storage tank much better than a tank next to the fire. In times like autumn you might want to run the stove only every other day or so, but the storage tank can provide you with warm water over a few days without running the stove. Also it gives room for future addition of other heat sources like solar water heating.

Here's something I just noticed: because this community is so friendly with each other it's easy to forget how many of us there are here watching Martijn every week. Over half a milion people are subscribed, and after just about 1 day of the video being up already over 150 thousand people have watched it. And we're all just here, vibing, enjoying a small reprieve from our daily hustle just to watch man dig some dirt, cut some pipes and take a walk.

I am a homesteader of over 50 years, and a retired carpenter. Here is what I like about your ways, you gave up on the crane and went with your roofer friends old school way. You scrapped plumbing plan1 with it's pumps and valves, and went with the straightforward plan2, after listening to other's thoughts. This kind of thoughtfulness, flexibility, and lack of ego will serve you well. More power to your arm, brother!

@ML Wessel That is so incredible sad & pathetic at the same time. Martjin is merely a hard working man ,who loves what he's doingcandvis making a living by filming it and posting it on YT to get likes & comments that in turn make it financially viable to continue in the pursuit of his goals. That he lives in a beautiful peaceful environment is a blessing to be sure but he is merely a man mot a god.

I would strongly advise to embed some conduit before pouring the final conrete. You never know what you want to add later on. Let's say you want to have a Starlink dish on the roof and put an ethernet cable to the other cabin, that could be solved neatly with some conduit.

There's a kind of romanticism in being so close to the fruits of your labor. With a job, at least with my job, I do it and I get paid, and then I use that money to live. But the abstraction of money makes it all seem disconnected. I'm not delusional enough to pretend that living off the land would be better, necessarily, but being closer to the ultimate result of what you do is an attractive thought. I guess that's what your videos give me. A window into what life could also be like, if I pulled up my metaphorical tent poles and did something entirely different - even if I doubt I'll ever do that. Thanks for your videos. They are enjoyable and appreciated.

Martijn, i listened to your discussion on the masonry stove and found it very good. I think you want to optimize the heat transfer to a water jacket very near the heat source. The expansion valve removes any danger of explosion. Also run very short heating coils in the concrete floor. Lastly utilize the sun for h2o heating as well…you’ll beat the utility supplier!

One of them had become very physically powerful. A world renowned personal trainer and a kung fu expert. So he grabs the pick to loosen the soil. About 2 inches of soil then boulders then bedrock. He was so strong he bent the pick!. Lol. I showed it to all our friends. He was worried we would be mad at him but we loved him. Some strength, eh?

Birds are usually where insects are, and those live in grass and leaves, so as soon as those birch trees near feeder will have leaves again, some bird will occasionally stumble upon the seeds, tell about this place to all of their flock, and then you will have another problem: too many birds! :D Also, different birds prefer different seeds, so probably a pre-made mix of seeds will bring more bird variety, which is always awesome. Loving your series, did not miss a single one.

Martijn, I heard you say you left your laundry in the machine in town. Once you get your bathroom set up, you may want to consider getting a portable washer (they are lightweight) that you can hook up to the tub/shower faucet and wash your laundry at home. You just need space to store in between loads. YT has plenty of video's on the pro's and cons of these units. However, since it is just for yourself, you won't have to worry about leaving the laundry in town again!

Hey I realize everyday you have a LOT of work to do preparing your house BEFORE winter comes, so I am going to make a suggestion, why move the dirt behind your house on the slope, just build a retaining wall from the rubble, flatten it out, a terrace. It would be a nice place for a future garden. You are a very resourceful man, moving rock and dirt to the bottom of your chicken coop, None of your ACTIONS , are wasted, all thought ahead. And you are so hard working, you are a very Admired man, for your diligence, and ingenuity, you Dutch are extremely intelligent.

It's a great change from the hustle and bustle and frenzy of life and some other channels. I appreciate that you are sharing this with the world. There is so much worthwhile to learn from your example of life.

the electrical boxes are modular, there is also 1 place box. you can also put the shukos in the 3-place box, and if you don't need a button you can put the special cap, you don't necessarily have to put 3 buttons. The best brand you can find is bticino

May I make a suggestion to your planning of the area you are now excavating ,to make this a downstairs bathroom with a short staircase down to the current opening to the outside and fill this opening with glass bricks for light. You would have plenty of space then for a shower, toilet and wash basin, leaving ample room upstairs for a bedroom I'm sure you have thought of this idea as everything you have done has been done with forethought and precision. I look forward with great anticipation for your next weekly vlog ad always.

Mille grazie! Non finire mai i lavori😊 brig.

Well, for the heater, I would use an existing plan that has worked for other people too. There should be something on the internet about this topic already. I've seen fan heaters around stove pipes, I've seen copper piping around stoves, and around chimneys. It should work just fine. I've also seen Pellet Stoves, they have a cast iron piece where the water goes through. Two wall radiators should also work, but if you really want to, the floor heating can be done too. :) Just be sure to use firebricks for the stove. Greetings, Jeff

I hope you continue to love being at your cabins for a long time. I certainly enjoy seeing the progress you are making in the renovations of the cabins. I've often wondered if the previous owners have ever been in touch with you or commented on your work to date. Thanks again for sharing a part of your life with us all. I've certainly come to appreciate my surroundings more just through watching your weekly videos. Looking forward to the next video. Take care.

Living in rural areas you do take notice of the changes of the seasons much more, at least I do. “As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can".” ― John Muir

Spring in the Alps, the new cycle begins, wonderful! Maybe plant a pumpkin? It's fun to watch it grow, it's like an explosion. Good to store, good to grill, fry it in a pan for paddies with onions, egg and parmensan. Or caramelise with sugar. The shell is a good addition for the chickens, they need something to peck at, even in autumn and winter when there are too few insects.
