Love this vid. HINT...On the shifter lever, use a CV joint boot to keep water out of the trans. I restore and find water, milk, in almost every trans. Water runs down the shifter and slowly leaks into the eng. CV joint looks good too

Well Fearless, as we say around here in french-quebec "C'est faite par du monde" (It's done by people). Some people do this often, some as a job, some only dream of doing it, and some, such as you, actually dare doing it. The only wrong way of doing anything is to not do them at all. Keep up your good and keep having fun doing it. Peace;)

Thanks man, that should be almost the same, besides the 6 gears, which I would think is better than 4. I haven't gotten the motor on it yet, but I will be getting it VERY soon, and then we will know how well it holds up.

Another great video by the way. I really enjoy your helpful how to's. I have a 1967 Suburban that I use for general gardening and food plot (for deer) work. They are incredibly tough tractors and steer much easier than most of this era. I repowered mine with a Kohler Command OHV 12.5 hp side shaft (my models was originally a Tecumseh and parts were scarce). Keep up the fantastic videos man.

Thanks for the vid. I've made a dual transaxle craftsman with two of these gear boxes and whenever I go over a curb or small log at an angle, 2 diagonal wheels of the rear 4 just spin. This will fix my problem. Thanks again!

Hay the last one I locked like that ....I welded in bolts exactly where you welded I just turned it to where the bolts Jammed and then welded them solid kinde like you did ... But I think I saw enough weld to make up for the bolts ... Lol nice video ... Perfect

Very good video. The only thing I might add to it is to replace the little pressure relief valve. on the right side of the trans, with a vent hose routed up behind the dash or somewhere dirt and water can't get in. That valve only lets pressure out, not air in, which could cause it to draw in water through the seals when the trans is ran through deep water which would cause it to cool fairly quickly. I've pulled a few of these transmissions apart and they always have water in them. Just a thought. Love your tractor by the way. That thing is awesome!!!

hey fearless, you didn't actually have to weld your gears, all you had to do is flip one of the gears on each side, so there would be 2 gears on each axle shaft on each side.

I have a similar transaxle in a old murray that i use for offroading and i wanted to lock it but i thought it would be hard, but your vid really helped. (:
@zacharythole307710 жыл бұрын
I am very surprised that locker has held up for you so long. I did the same as you, learning by the video, and my locker died quickly. I still have the stock rear tires on but im pretty heavy 250ish. Drove her around for a bit and snapped the teeth i welded to clean off those little gears. Luckily nothing else was destroyed so I was able to dissasemble and reweld. Only difference was i welded the living shit out of the little gears and then procededed to weld them directly to the bullgear or whatever to prevent them from breaking again. That has worked well. I would definately suggest pulling that apart and doing some more extensive welding to prevent breakage. Just my two cents, trying to help ya out
@Fearlessfront11 жыл бұрын
I think so, if you look at the end of the music video i did of the antique tractor festival, there were two pulling tractors that had the same trans as this, they had 26" ag tires AND competed in pulling competitions.... Un-locked of course. So it should be pretty rugged. everything has bearings, not bushings.

When you put a seal in, don't use a socket..you can still dent the seal with it, and cause it to fail. The best thing to use is a piece of wood the same diameter. I use an old wood hammer handle that is sanded smooth and square on the end.
@Fearlessfront11 жыл бұрын
yeah, this one is 1" vs the murray 3/4" thick. it also has bearings everywhere, the murray? bushings...

I recently picked up a 1966 suburban 10, not sure if it is this same model trans or not yet. I am considering locking it but I was wondering about how well they steer afterwards. I have had some carts in the past with posi that pushed the front and made turning difficult on road. Does your Sears push the front on road?

Using a socket on the new seals is a good way to do it but I find a better way to keep the tool centered with each hit of the hammer is use two pieces of steel pipe nipples that fit into the seal (1/2-3/8") and a coupling. The pipe goes into the seal and the coupling is what presses the seal. This also works good for other seals or bearings

Those planetary gear differentials are awesome, a lot of R/C cars use those, but they are usually in their own plastic case. So what I'll do is scrape out all the grease and use red loc-tite on those diffs, then re-install them after 24 hrs... Obviously it wouldn't last here, but what you've done is essentially the same, but with welding. I've never had a problem, so I don't see why you would. :-)

I think by modding a classic into something else is what the viewer was referring to. I have one now, 3 years older than yours. Sure, I plan on adding a few things, but... mainly leaving the drivetrain stock. and only giving it better tires, new paint in some scheme or another, and more lights. MAY regear. *shrugs*

Brother have you ever thought about installing left and right brakes and 2 pedals like on tractors instead of welding your differential. With your skill level and design ability's it would be easier than all the disassembly and everything would be external.
