Today we get to work on Awesome survivor 64 Olds Six window H/top. Once we get the Anchors (brakes) working we can road test it and see what else she might need to bring her out of her long hibernation.

That is a nice car. Big land yacht those brackets on the back axle. I bet you they were part of the trailer hitch and that thing on the dash is a trailer brake. I bet you back in the day they were towing a big motorhome like you used to see an. I Love Lucy. That's more likely what it is but a beautiful car. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦

Anti sway bar mounts, they keep things like campers from rolling when cornering. At least that's my guess, you can still buy them for towing RVs any they just mount to a special hitch you have to use.

Reminds me of my first car at age 15 that the owner of an independent auto parts store in Michigan gave me as a bonus since I worked in the back machining cylinder heads and the 425 of the 66 Oldsmobile 98 LS needed a valve job. I had never actually wrenched on a car before and ended up having a few bolts and a bracket left over that I could never figure out where they went, but it ran great. As a freshly licensed 16 year old, I showed off the power to another teen and suddenly it was stuck at wide open throttle and the brakes couldn’t stop it from hitting the pickup parked a car length in front of me. Turning the key off was my only option. The bumper of the pickup truck flew into the air and landed on my hood. The owner of the truck came out and graciously allowed me to weld his bumper back on. I just needed to tweak the carb linkage to make the Olds act right again. I can’t remember what happened to the 98 except I drove it until I enlisted in 1974 at age 17.

Years ago... hell decades ago lol I bought a 1970 98. That 455 had tons of low end torque! It was a very smooth riding and quiet car. A bit of trivia, Originally, 98 meant series 90 with 8 cylinder engine. That's a nice example of a 64 hard top. That chattering noise sounded a bit like a speedometer cable?

I mentioned this when Steve showed off his car, but in the mid-80s in New Mexico, I had a 64 Starfire, which is basically a 2-dr version of this car, with front buckets and a full sport console. The tach was in the console, forward of the shift lever. Same engine. At that time, you could still find parts in the junkyards.

It's a personal opinion thing, but I feel the cars (and the engines that came in them) that were created in the 50's & 60's are more visually appealing & stylish than anything being made now. Anything being built now, the designers have to hide the engine behind big plastic covers to make under the hood aesthetically acceptable.

I had a 1968 Olds 98 with the 425 ultra-high compression V-8. It was loaded down with options, like the Magic Eye auto-dimmer and the posi-traction diff. That car would start in the Maine winters down to minus 20 degrees. You could hold a square dance in the trunk. With a 11.25:1 compression ratio, I had to mix leaded regular and high-octane unleaded to keep it from pinging. The frame rusted out and broke, and I passed it off to my brother-in-law to junk out, still miss it.

For Steve's Oldsmobile, I would suggest a GPS speedometer. I have one in my 67 Chevelle because the Holley Sniper upgraded screen/controller thingamabob has that as well. Not sure if there would be a way to have that signal somehow move the stock speedo needle, but that would be WAY cool! Even if you just had it in a digital display screen kinda hidden out of the way low on the dash, or some other visible location, you'd have a speedometer. Take care Kiwi, and stay cool!

@gordonborsboom7460
@gordonborsboom7460 Ай бұрын
1965 models had the replacement for these engines, in the 400/425 cubic inch range. Side by side you can see the similarities, in that it was an evolutionary design. In 1964 you could get the 330 cube version of the new design. Basically low and tall deck versions of the sameengine, as the bore spacing is the same. This allows the blocks to be machined on the same machining line. Even the head bolt spacing is the same. The diesel engine Olds would have run down the same line as the gas engines, with detours for the diesel specific items, such as the injection pump mounts, etc. it’s one of the corners they cut when developing the diesel engine, by making it have too many compromises

I drilled out a spindle for a speedo drive on my 61 Corvair Rampside. I used a long drill and a drill press. I also drilled from both ends, meeting (almost) perfectly in the middle. It did take some time and patience, especially since a spindle doesn't want to sit on the drill press table perfectly square. I had to jury-rig the speedo cable to the spindle, since it wasn't designed to have a cable attached to it. Only 63 and 64 Olds and the 65-69 Corvair had the front wheel speedo drive, at least at GM. That Olds is a pretty nice car!

This may be answer 1,025 about the unit on the dashboard and the shackles underneath the rear axle. The unit on the dashboard is almost certainly a brake controller. The shackles under the rear axle would be attachment points for a load leveling trailer hitch. That's kind that would be used to pull a travel trailer. There are a lot of those in the 1960s.

I suspect that a competent machine shop may be able to drill through the spindle. Spark erosion (EDM here in the states) would work but is slower, hence more costly. I ran an EDM daily before I retired. There is a specialized EDM called a hole popper. It is used strictly for burning deep holes quickly. If you could locate a shop with one that would be the way to go.

Yes - there were a few variations on hitch systems designed to transfer the trailer tongue weight applied to the towing vehicle. Some would tend to lift the rear of the tow vehicle by pushing the front down. The goal being to even the load somewhat between the front and rear. Reese offers this system and it can be quite effective. The system on the Olds placed a portion of the tongue weight directly on the rear axle housing completely bypassing the tow vehicle suspension. Both systems use a configuration of levers and springs to offer some give and flexing in the setups. Otherwise something is going to break with undulations between the tow vehicle and a loaded trailer. The trailer brake controller on the dash and this load distribution kit indicates the car was probably used to tow a larger travel trailer. The roto automatic transmission can’t be all that bad tolerating this service.
