After my wife had cancer to bring in extra money i sold firewood for 7 years averaging 110 cords a year. I used a 22 ton splitter from tractor supply. Very rarely did I have problems splitting anything with it. If you keep the edge on the wedge sharp it will cut through the knots and twists.. hickory was the most challenging because it is stringy. Bottom line a 22ton will serve you just fine.

With these short days, it"s nice to have some light to work by. Leave those work lights in the store, buy a good led head light. I tried work lights out side and you always have shadows. Wear a head light and every where you look, you have a bright light at your focus point. I work in the garden at night in the summer when it's cooler. The only draw back is bugs in your eyes. I know some folks think you split too small, I split mine even smaller to get the fire going quicker. I heat with wood in a air tight fire place and if you only have a few coals left, you can pick out three or four smaller ones to lay on the coals and get a flame quicker. I also split some six by six over-nighters to throw in before I go to bed. You were splitting up a storm with that red monster, awesome.

Mike - i work with quite a few large pieces and set the splitter up vertically. The hydraulic lift is very convenient. I don’t have one. Also, the LED replacement bulbs work great for all the old halogen lights. Will send you a picture when i get back home from work travel.

I have a 22 c this will be my third year with my wolf ridge spliter I added auto cycles and 36 inch stoke which cycles approximately 11 seconds. With those features and the way it has been thought thru my opinion it is the best bang for your buck.

Good morning -4 F degrees in Northern Vermont this morning. I have a neighbor who does firewood on the side and probably does 20 or so cords a year. He definitely could use a splitter like your Wolf Ridge. Watching him work he is producing probably less than half the output per hour than you do with that splitter.He probably doesn't do enough to warrant the conveyor but definitely the controllable multi-cut head would be a huge game changer for him. Blade design . Angle / bevel on edge / The setting and hardness of blades / sharpness of the blade are the big factors on splitters . That’s why that splitter will split anything . 👍

I'm currently looking for a smaller but strong splitter. I split mostly Ash and oak, but occasionally run into hickory. Great video! Even watching wood being split is stress relieving.

I love how you have used the Wolf Ridge so much. I can't see any signs of the paint wearing. The only thing I would like to be different is the axle moved more towards the discharge end and the tongue on the other end. I think it is a great splitter. I love that it is made in the United states and by great people. God bless

Hi Mike, I'm always amazed how clean your firewood is. It must be due to the fact the trees are in the forest and grow tall & straight fighting for the sun. I never get wood that clean here in the burbs of CT I get big nasty wood with crotches going every which way. The piece you call gnarly looks pristine to me. I agree for you, the 22 ton is plenty, but I'd up the tonnage in my neighborhood. I run a 7" cylinder. I made up for the cycle time with lots of flow, a Ford 300-6 truck engine and a hydraulic pump from an excavator. Lets just say mine's not compact though.

Mike, you were saying about getting lights. I have Hyper Tough's 2500 Lumen LED portable Rechargeable work light. It produces a good amount of light and lasts for around two hours on a full charge. I also have the Hyper Tough 5000 Lumen corded work light. That is very powerful, it will light up my back yard. They are both available at Wal-Mart.

love the wolfe ridge compact commercial splitter. My brother bought the exact same model after subscribing to your channel. our first time using it, we knocked out over 6 totes full of wood. We used both the 4 way and 6 way and agree, 4 way is best for general use. but 6 way was better for a certain sized round.

Mount a few lights on poles that mount to side of the conveyor that pin going up but can swing down and pin for traveling. Definitely gotta have them with these short sun days

Nice work mike! I used to burn firewood in our other house before we moved, I would cut 12 pick up loads in the late summer on the weekends then spend the nice cool fall days splitting and stacking - all with a 8 pound splitting maul. Had to have roughly 5 chord to make it through the winter. This of course was next years firewood, had to stay a year ahead so it dried. Take care and see ya on the next one.

That is amazing how many rounds you can get through with that splitter! The design makes all the difference, our splitter has the wedge on the hydraulic piston opposite the Wolf Ridge. The Wolf Ridge design makes work go a lot faster. Thanks for the videos Mike. God Bless.

Might rig some up on the ramp unit - using the battery that is being charged as the motor runs. And likewise on the splitter. Saves other power source like a tractor running.

Back 50 years ago my dad and I built a splitter with low (1200 PSI) pressure hydraulics and a 3 inch cylinder. We still have it. With a little over 4 tons of force it would split anything we put in it, though it did have trouble with large elm. It was only single wedge, no cross wedge. We found that most woods popped right open within an inch of touchimg the point, so it probably could handle a staggered cross wedge. I'm amazed at the 20 to 30 ton splitters made today.

I have a 22 ton Huskee that I had a friend that owns a welding shop modify for me. I split some monster Oak with it. I have calculated that some of the blocks that I split weigh over 600 lbs. I show a video of the splitter but it has rained almost non stop here in Iowa and I am hoping to show how the modifications work and work well. The video that I show of my splitter show the size of some of these blocks that I am talking about.

Hey Mike, Instead of using a generator to run a couple LED lights. Maybe look into one of those larger jumpstarter battery packs with the inverters. Search on Amazon for "Schumacher SJ1332" Really handy little unit and it only weighs about 25 pounds.

I can tell I'm getting old because this is therapy for me, and I'm watching Mike work from my office chair. The only thing missing is the smell of crushed apple, when you're splitting oak. Wish you could pipe that through my MacBook Pro, Mike. Stuff we split smells like rancid turpentine (cedar, juniper, aspen, fir).

Maybe a leanto carport structure with lights to cover equipment and operator from rain, and the conveyor would take the wood out... Maybe bring in a power line... maybe infrared heater...save time on hauling things out too to make the best out of those 30 min days.

I like your consistent love of the land and all that it brings good or bad you seem to be able to Handel it all, wood splitting is a some have said with the equipment you have is therapeutic. A sense of accomplishment and yes even fun. I miss doing this with my Dad and wish I would have been more attentive to the time we had those many years ago. Many of the log splitters make claims of tonnage that are unrealistic. The higher quality ones like Wolfe Ridge and Eastonmade are going to be more accurate.I am interested in a vertical splitter made by Powersplit. They have a nice large work table at the right height and three of their models are self propelled. I saw a video were the operator rolled a 32" log on the lift and had no problem splitting it up. I was taught when working to make gravity my friend while working.

Mike, I have an old Huskee 22 ton splitter. Its atleast 20 years old and has split some knotty pieces of Pin Oak and Hickory. Splitter does slow down a little, but it does get through it.

Seen a lighting system a Michigan M-dot road crew was using. looked like a hanging White Chinese lantern. wicked bright, illuminated a huge area like day light. one lite up about 100 yards of roadway easily. might suit your needs in one led light.

Mike, you could have a 10'x10' ez-up tent, enclosed on 3 sides, with KZbin and OWTM logo on it over the splitter. It could have 12v LED lights powered by splitter battery and the solo stove near by. Have a productive day.

Mike , I see these towable highway construction generator lighting trailers at auctions all the time and they always sell for very reasonable prices. Just one would light up your whole work area. The lighting mast is telescopic for transportation.

Good morning. I believe RK has a 10x10 4 post e z up. Possibly use it as cover in light rain/snow. I'm sure you can find a couple straight trees for posts and you have options screw in j hooks or run conduit and wire in lights or as you said use rechargeable. J hooks are for hanging lights. I like dusk to dawn on a switch myself you could have a switch down by the Renewable Energy Work Center and one up by the garage. Just spit balling here. Hi Hunter and girls. Be safe.

Hey Mike, you have that 22 ton splitter working just right for you and the size of wood you are harvesting and you explained the 6 way splitter and how you use it too. You get great firewood and also great amounts of kindling wood for starting the fires without any extra work other than picking it up. Great video and thanks again for sharing your time and videos. mike trust me on this.go to your favorite farm store.get a 18 inch long led light bar,and a magnetic tool bar.apply this to the rops on the rk24 wire it in for auxilurary lights.it works as good as any light plant going,takes little fuel to sit there and idle,and turns night to day.i have this setup on my kubota,one facing forward,one back.makes plowing after dark a breeze.

Mike check with your power company and get a pole put in and get dusk to dawn Led. I just changed over to LED and Love it. You could even put it on a switch to turn it off if you dont want it on all night. My light only cost me $12 bucks a month

Mike you are correct. 22 ton is plenty. I had a 20 ton splitter. I can count the pieces that it wouldn't split on two hands. In 20 years of splitting. I love your hydraulic adjustable wedge. I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about getting the 28C with electric start, then I can power some LED lights for late evening splitting just like you are. I'm looking at both Wolfe Ridge 28C with autocycle and Eastonmade 9-16 with autocycle. Not much chance getting my wife to help with the wood much. Autocycle would help me a lot... or maybe just wear me out faster LOL. Right now I've got a 19 year old Brave 22 ton V/H that has been getting it done, but I need more production, there's just not enough hours in the day, and I want to get more done.

Hey Mike, would it help if you took a black marker and made a thick line on the red vertical blade marking the optimum height for the top of the horizonal blade so you can quickly position it to the correct height and keep the wood thickness mode consistent? Just a thought. Looks like you need some more stone on the road between the splitter and the rounds pile. Getting a little muddy. Great Videos Mike. Love the channel!!!!

I would love to see you try out and give your opinion of their box-wedge log splitter with a log return. I'm sure they can customize the split size to, say, 5" X 5" or slightly larger. I have mine at 5-1/2" X 6" to get longer burn times, but I understand you might want them smaller when it's for sale to the public.

Mike I really like the splitter but I would be interested to see if it could handle the really hard and knarly Australian gum trees. I bought a 4 way wedge for my splitter and it is useless with most of my trees, I spend more time clearing stuck logs, it is quicker just with the single wedge.

Really looking forward to getting that Wolf Ridge, at 70 yrs old my back is killing me after lifting 15-20 inch rounds for a couple of hours. How's Hunter doing?

If your going to be building a shed(s), will you be digging a trench and running power to the "A" field? How bright are the lights that you put along the top of the fence when you set up for your parties? Good for general lighting then bright area floods for specific work areas. I mike, how do feel about large pine trees? I have several that are probably 36 - 38” in diameter. The canopies are so big and they are ugly, but I have no use for the wood if I cut them down.... any suggestions?
