I've been ignoring the Spanish property videos in favor of Italian, but saw this one - a cave house - which I've been fascinated with since I was a child, so had to take a look. THIS! This is the kind of home I've dreamt about living in. Having spent the majority of my childhood living in the high altitude desert region of Oregon (USA), even the visible terrain reminds me of when I was the happiest. I am in love with this home. ❤ We are so close to retirement, but not quite ready to buy. This home may have changed my mind about Spain. I will look into expat requirements to see if we qualify. I love these homes. I did a deep dive on your site today. I wish you could tell us more about living in the cave homes. Average temperature, compared to outside and what the area is like. Also, I've been looking at other homes in Italy, can you give any reasons why we should choose Spain over Italy? I would just love an idea of what the cave home communities are like. Thank you.

Thank you for your post. Modern cave home living is likely one of the most interesting, economical, efficient, quirky and comfortable ways of living in our inland Mediterranean climate. The natural underground temperature at the depth of the cave rooms will typically naturally maintain themselves between 17ºC-22ºC (63ºF-72ºF) with the natural humidity levels inside the home typically between 50%-60% (not too high and not too low) throughout the year. They cave homes are extremely efficient very little heating is needed and no A/C is needed in the summer. Many of the cave homes here were originally constructed centuries ago and if they are properly cared for they are know for being everlasting structures. The region where the majority of the cave homes are located is in the Granada Geo-Park UNESCO area. This region of the "Altiplano of Granada" encompasses an area almost 100km (62 miles) across. The surroundings are absolutely incredible, with variations in the landscapes from badlands desert type landscapes, to forested snow-capped mountains, lakes and trout streams to plains all within a 20min - 40min. drive of one another. The original settlements of this region date back 1.4 million years and with traces in all the surrounding towns of every civilisation who has passed through this region of southeast Spain since then. In our experience, the primary differences are that the overall cost of living in this region of Spain does tend to be lower than in Italy and you can typically get better value for money for homes in fully functioning communities here (not abandoned villages) that are very well connected and accesible.
