Getting back onto two wheels as my son showed me how many great bikes are now LAMS. 2008 Classic, with the Vance and Hines shorties, so I have ordered baffles. Most of my trips to S.A. have been business - done a lot of miles, but not in those sort of areas. A couple of visits to friends, Adelaide and Mt Gambier, so a little of the Limestone Coast and the Hills - if I could get a job there I'd move!

Well howdy to you. They are a very good bike well made and can take a bit of a hard time but, and the but is here the 650 is a bit down on power compared to other brands of similar size. On the surface that may not seem to much of an issue however when you start going on 100 kph roads the power of the 650 lacks somewhat and overtaking needs to be planed a bit more than other bikes. The 650's top speed is just on 160 kph and it takes a bit of time to get it there as well these bikes will zip up to say 120 kph okay but after that they grind down in acceleration big time.... but if you are new to the bike world or moving up to a bigger bike again the 650 is a solid engine and it will do the job.

Howdy back; I had the pipes and hyper charger put on from bran new oh and the re-jet kit for the induction system as well. Then about six months later I put on the tachometer and that is very handy to have. Then a month or so after the tac I installed a charging wire and connection plug to keep the batt charged in the winter months when I don’t use the bike and at the same time I installed the volt gauge.

Hi back Luke; The tachometer, Hypercharger & Vance & Hines exhaust all were ordered for my local Yamaha dealership when I got the bike brand new. The Volt gauge I got form EBay. However you can get both the tachometer and the volt gauge form EBay in one of my replies to someone in this vid clip I found both of them on EBay for a guy and I sent put the links up in one of the answers but that was some time ago now. The Tachometer wires directly onto the coil of plug one with just one wire for that and a red and black for the light very simple and the volt gauge is the same just connect it to any 12v line and it will read the voltage.

Fun bike to have I feel and even when I jump from the ZX-14 to the Yammi yes it is a big jump but honestly when one rides within the speed limits power is not a big consideration. And like I have said in one of my vids; Once the engine frees up somewhat the 650 v-twins 0-120 KPH is quite fine and it’s on a par with a family 6cyl car or slightly better in an all-out race. To get back into riding again they are a good choice as the bike is easy to handle and forgiving with a solid engine that will take heaps of hard usage however on the highway though one must expect the rpm to sit higher than a large bore motor and that seems to give an impression that they are not the best choice of a bike to travel long distance with. In saying that though the Yamaha 650 V-Twin is very happy to sit on the highway even with two up on them given the rpm max out at 8k for us this way the highway speeds are 65 mph and that’s 4000 rpm so the engine will sit on that easy and more.

Hey back and congratz on getting a XVS man that’s awesome and they are one tuff engine as they can take a pounding. But all up they are a top bike I really enjoyed mine and the short shots well yup they are loud. At first and for a long while I wanted the noise and liked it loud but after a good chunk of time and many k’s on the clock it did start to become too much I felt, and a system a bit quieter like the long shots might have been a better choice for me I think as the long shots are deeper in there note and just that bit less in db. My M 109-R that I replaced the XVS with has the factory stock the exhaust on it and I am going to keep it that way too as I like the note that comes from it mind you if that sound was just that bit louder I would be totally happy. And thanks Darren for watching content on my channel as I do appreciate it very much and as you may well know my channel has a bit of everything on it but mainly bikes and cars…keep safe man and enjoy your ride.

@@rolandkeith5322 Thanks mate 😁 it’ll be my first bike obviously, i have ridden my dirt bike a few times but haven’t been in a few years. I’ve heard a lot of the Short shots and they sound great in videos but yeah i’ve heard the same thing you said also that they’re a little deafening after a while i’ll definitely check out the long shots i reckon, want something with sound and a nice rumble but nothing overpowering. I’ve currently got the stock exhaust but previous owners removed the baffles and sounds really good! Do you know if i get the king shots if the bike needs re jetting or is that only with an upgraded air intake? I’ll definitely check out more bikes on your channel mate! I’m pretty keen to get out on mine pretty soon, go for my license this weekend coming so of course my work week will go slow like a kid trying to sleep christmas eve. Ride safe mate!
@rolandkeith53222 жыл бұрын
@@H..H_ A guy I know had a XVS as well and we did a bike swap one ride he had the longs I had the shorts out of the two the longs sounded far deeper than my shorts if I was to do it again I personally would go for the slightly quitter deeper sound of them longs. As far as tuning, if you alter the intake ( air filter set up )from stock & the exhaust together as I did then re-jetting is something I would do for all out extracting the most power out of it but in saying this the standard jetting option that is used when one does this is off and the engine runs to lean. So really a dyno tune to get it right is the one thing you may want to consider, if you’re going to do this as I did and I added to the mix a ….. Power Commander all at the same time. The Power Commander will change the important timing of the bike as the XVS motors are governed back by retarding the timing from the factory to hold the limit at 40hp. So change the exhaust open the air flow and allow the timing to advance the engine and it’s a bike that goes dam well for its engine size and overall weight. Doing all of this though man costs a bit of money including the dyno to set it all up correctly and the question is? Is it all worth this cost for the gains? My answer is “perhaps not”. Yeah it goes better about on a par with an Iron 883 but in the world of powerful cruisers fundamentally they both are not engineered to be super-fast bikes. If I was to do it all again I would get the sound I am after and just call it stops at that but concentrate way more on my skills of been able to ride smart and handle a bike well, because if power and a drag race fast cruisers is something you’re after ( like I was ) then the best option is the M 109-R once you are on you’re your full licence. To get an idea pop over to a video called …. “Why the M109R is INSANE and why you don't want one”. By a KZbin channel called ….Srkcycles…… . Because I have a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 I also wanted a cruiser as well so I had one for summer and one for winter so the XVS was my pick at the time as I loved the looks of them and how solid the engine is but I got to the end of the road after a bit of cash and still wanted more so that’s why I changed bikes. But ( and man this is now all turning into a novel ….LoL ) I want to get another XVS 650 one day as I would love to rat-rod one plus they are a dam fun ride and I know I will enjoy having one as another option to ride along with the other two so one day it will happen.

Howdy back to you. Sorry I have been away but I just got back and got your comment. No I did not do anything to the fuel controller. Hey mate thanks for the video. I’m a just time rider and am currently on my Ls in NSW. I bought a 2018 xvs650 custom and am loving it. I’m interested in getting the Vance & Hines short shots for the sound/safety aspect, however I’ve Read that they reduce the bikes power. Is this true and if so by how much? I’m still a novice in the mechanics of bikes however any feedback would be appreciated. Cheers
@rolandkeith53224 жыл бұрын
Reduction in power? nope that's a new one on me ...wow. apart form the fact that well that just can't happen if you can grab some as they are good. There is too much understanding to go through in exhaust to have an idea what effects power and what doesn't but in the shortest expression with a 4 stroke engine you want as mush gas removed from the head as you can get and only a restriction in gas flow will cause a loss of power but never a increase of flow will cause that. A two stroke engine YES but not a four stroke.

Can you please do a video on how effective the brakes are on the vstar 650? I’m thinking buying one of these but the quality of the brakes keep coming up as a red flag in other reviews. How do you find them?
@rolandkeith53226 жыл бұрын
At the moment the bike is not on the road because of winter as I use my other bike when it’s cold weather so just now I can’t do a video on that. However I can put some light on the topic of the brakes for you on the Yamaha XVS 650. One thing to understand about any legal motor bike or car is that before it is allowed on the roads is they all get tested for compliance and safety.So in short the brakes work within boundaries set out by the authorities of each country. How are the brakes on this bike?? Well they are in proportion to the performance of this bike as this is the best way I can put it. They do work very well as I have tested them out many times on dummy emergency stops. The XVS 650 brakes are not unlike many other similar bikes and they do need a bit more muscle to operate them rather than say a sport bike and in many ways I think that it is better because been to sensitive in the case of an emergency stop for a new riders can be a bigger problem. What I think is the case here is that people will ride all sorts of bikes but then have expectations that things will be the same but they are not. For instance let’s say you hopped onto a Yamaha R6 a bike that can reach a top speed of 295+Kph then you swap onto a XVS 650 that has a top speed of just 160kph so one will get a difference in breaking power and yes then comparison would seem like the XVS braking system is not that fantastic but the point here is that the higher the top speed the more power the breaks need to have. So in reality it’s all in proportion.
@rolandkeith53226 жыл бұрын
Also in my video at the 11 minute mark I did have to do a quick stop to the lights as they went yellow on me and looking at the video I was doing 60 Kph and I in complete control pulled up the bike in 3 car lengths with heaps of head room to apply more stopping power if needed.

Hummmm it's that alternate universe deal I was talking about where the water goes down the drain backwards and we drive on the other side of the road, no one needs a gun and most people have a good amount of cash because people believe that credit is crap, clean air, a lack of drug needles in playgrounds for kids, a government that actually does something at times and vegemite.

you know ..... sometimes some people just don't make sense. And this is one of those times. Dude once some thing has been recorded all of the settings have been set so it is you that only has the option to make volume changers. How odd.!
ummm...????? for what country? Wow some one is smart ........... Not.
