Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #651
Dates of adventure: 7/13-7/14/22
While headed to Lake Powell, my 4Runner started acting up right outside the tiny little polygamist town of Colorado City...so I had no choice but to pull in and try to find help. Which I did -- from the most UNEXPECTED trio of angels!

1987 my family and I took a trip from SF to Michigan for my wife's 10 year HS class reunion. When we arrived in Salt Lake, my truck started to have the same issues you had on this trip. We got towed to a gas station and turned out it would take a couple of days to get a alternator. The owner loaned us his spare car so we could explore and enjoy our side trip for FREE, no charge even for milage. Great people.

I have to agree with the others recommending you replace that alternator now. Your battery is primarily there to crank the engine while starting. Once running the alternator should produce enough electricity to run the vehicle and recharge the battery. In your case, the alternator failed to produce enough electricity to keep up with the electrical demand causing the battery to take over and eventually drain. Once the battery drained, your ignition system and computer were not able to keep the vehicle running. You have an intermittent alternator failure that will soon turn to a permanent failure. Replace it now before you get stuck in who knows where.
@TheGor54
@TheGor54 2 жыл бұрын
Right on point. She describes a whistling sound before the breakdown indicating a bad alternator bearing. When they tested it at those stores they probably only tested the electrical components and didn't inspect the bearings.
@sizzelot
@sizzelot 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheGor54 they have to spin it to test it dont they? What about possibility oil got on belt during oil change and started slipping causing the whistle?
@Doesitmatter113
@Doesitmatter113 2 жыл бұрын
@@sizzelot Oil is drained through the pan, at the bottom of the engine. How did you envision oil getting onto the belt that controls the alternator? You have to be one stupid mechanic to pull that one off. If you have oil on your belts, it's from gasket failure. Not from an oil change. Only two reasons that battery died. Age, or a bad alternator. In either case, with that mileage, you replace both.
@sizzelot
@sizzelot 2 жыл бұрын
@@Doesitmatter113 Uh yeah it would be pretty easy to do when you refill the oil if your not careful. You don't just drain oil without refilling it unless you want a short ride, but I guess you never thought of that.

A suggestion from an engineer, amateur auto mechanic, and long time wonder hussy admirer, get your alternator replaced. Find a convenient time when it's not an emergency. The alternator could test good and then fail and test bad and test good again. 150K miles is enough on an alternator. An alternator failure could strand you anywhere so it's not worth the risk. mks

Crazy timing. My battery died yesterday. Ordered lunch, went to pick it up - car was dead. Thankfully I was able to dig out my bike, put some air in the tires and pick up my late lunch cause I was already hangry. Usually I get my batteries from O'Reilly but when I looked it up online they wanted double what I paid last time. I looked at Costco on a whim and it was half of what O'Reilly was asking. Got a jump and got the last battery in my size from Costco and changed it in the parking lot. Went inside to see what their bourbon selection looked like and found a delicious Four Roses single barrel which I had a taste of last night. Glad you got some help so far from home and hopefully you too are now relaxing.

Given all the time you like going off the grid, I recommend you purchase two items: -Cigarette lighter socket battery checker -Solar Panel battery charger Checking your battery and alternator are super easy. - Alternator: start engine; voltage should be around 14 volts - Battery: with engine off, voltage should be 12.9 and 12.1. It’ll slowly drop as you use the energy from it.
@bobrouse8634

It could still be the alternator breaking down under heat but will run fine after cooling. Within an alternator, there is a semiconductor within called a "triode" pack (basically 3 diodes). That converts the AC from the 3 phase winding to DC . It is a rare phenomenon but semiconductors can suffer from damage that can only manifest failure / breakdown when they get hot. Depending on the state of the alternator at the time it was checked, all three mechanics probably were right based on what they saw . I would go ahead and replace it at your mileage, heat levels, and if you idle alot, a 140K mile alternator with desert heat may be equivalent wuth wear to one w/ 160-175 K miles anywhere else.

Yay for helpful people! I've been sleeping in my car since the end of January, and while I don't have much in the way of adventures to share such as you, mechanical issues are a huge source of stress. In August of 2021 my Check Engine light went on, and I lost count of how many visits it took until it was fixed. Around late April 2022 it seemed as if it was fixed, but then the light came back on in late June and it turned out apparently they used an incorrect part, so it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago (mid July 2022) that they rectified that screw up! Hopefully it will stay fixed! Admittedly, the car never had issues running, it seemed as it maybe it was related to a botched software upgrade on a recall related to a temperature or particulate sensor? Very worrisome 11 months regardless.

When that check engine light comes on, make sure you go to an auto parts store 1st, most will plug into your cars computer for free for a diagnostic code that'll tell you what the problem is, sometimes it's a simple sensor you can buy there, then watch a tutorial on KZbin on your make model and problem fix....this will save you a TON of money!
@sizzelot

If it was the mass air flow sensor those are very easy fix on your own. Just remove screws securing it, unplug from electrical harness, and spray with mass air flow sensor cleaner from auto parts store being careful not to contact the delicate platnum sensor itself. Had to clean mine twice now over 450K miles to clear a check engine light on a 98 Tacoma.

What a beautiful story! When things look the darkest the dawn shines its brightest. Had this happen to me in a 85 convertible Celica. Walked three miles to a farmers place and he let me spend the night in my car while my battery charged in his shed. The next morning I made it from Kearny Texas to Brownsville where my parents were RVing. The have an auto shop there that does nothing but alternators. It cost maybe $25 bucks to restring my old alternator. That car lasted another hundred fifty thousand, until it quit on my way to work at over 300K. Life's adventures.

Hi, there! when watching video and you describing the breakdown: the dashboard lights coming on and other things going haywire... basically, everything was shutting down. Well, if you had a voltmeter gauge attached to your "rig" you would see the voltage of your car "very low!"... (with car running, normal voltage will show around 13-14 volts, and just sitting (parked) somewhere in the 12s.) So, just as you were describing the symptoms I thought "the ALTERNATOR has gone bad." Well, as changing out that old battery is a good thing... I would replace that alternator, too, Miss. It is most likely faulty or on it's way out. "Get'r done." ❤️

The plastic cover on your engine has two main purposes. First is to provide a slight amount of sound insulation and the second is to just make the engine compartment look prettier. That second is the main reason it’s there. As for the battery/alternator issue, a bad cell in the battery (a whole auto battery is composed of several individual cells.) can cause a battery to not provide sufficient power to start a vehicle. And also pull excessive charge from the alternator. Because of all the computerized electronics in newer vehicles, proper battery charge and alternator output is essential. Get bellow about 11 volts output and the computers will start competing for the current and that will start bringing warning lamps on in the dash. Extreme heat or cold can be very hard on batteries as both will reduce its ability to store and provide current. One thing to always check is how tight your battery cables are attached to the battery. If you an wiggle them at all, they are too loose.

Great story Sarah ! Last year I got a flat tire in a Cabela's parking lot in Tualatin, Or. My roadside service guy got way behind schedule, and I waited over 3 hours for him to show up. I lost count on the number of folks (all perfect strangers) who offered to help me change the tire. At least 8 or 9 people. Shows how good and helpful most people are.

I'm curious, does your vehicle not come with at least a donut spare? Unless you're handicapped, changing a tire is very simple. I never could understand calling a tow truck to change a flat tire. Imagine if you would have been in the middle of nowhere, with no cell service, not being able to change a tire.

Husby is an expert mech. I said "OK, whats wrong?" He said "Battery, and check alternator. Heat kills batteries." Bumpy roads, I learned, do also. Please keep battery in your thoughts in future, have fun!

Hang in there Wonder H.! Glad you weren't way the heck out there. Maybe you can bring one of those electric scooters that go like 30 miles + on an electric charge, that way if you are ever stuck in a dead zone you can ride out of there for help or at least to get cell service in a location that is safe. You rock bud!!! 🎸

Car batteries typically need to be changed out once every 3 years. My little Toyota Yaris had to have the battery changed last week. The new battery has a 40 month warranty for private cars, but they only give you 12 months if it's a commercial vehicle, or 6 months if it's a taxi or rideshare vehicle. That pretty much tells how much time you are going to get out of a car battery.

If your alternator is a Denso (OEM) it should make it well past 250K miles. Edit: Hang on to your 4Runner! It can be serviced practically everywhere on the planet! Picked up my '02 4Runner (4×4) new in Nov '01. Odo just turned 167K; lots of off-road except for a few U.S. cross country trips, and extended trips in South America and N. Africa. Pro tip: ALWAYS insist on Denso parts. p.s. Stay casual!

The hot desert heart will kill batteries and tires. They need to be replace much sooner than under normal temp areas. Desert heat just kills everything on a car.

Since you are traveling to desolate locations. Items subject to failure are the alternator and water pump based on age and mileage. Replace those preemptively. Along with hoses and belts If needed. This will save you alot of anxiety for the case of what ifs.

My wife grew up in Kanab, Utah, which is North of Fredonia by just a few miles. The FLDS in Colorado City do keep to themselves, but they are usually willing to help someone who is having a problem like a dead battery. In Colorado City, which is in Arizona, Rocky Mountain Auto Care sells batteries, and Carquest auto parts in Hilldale Utah also sells batteries. Hilldale is on the other side of the state line from Colorado City. A lot of FLDS have moved to Texas, and now Colorado City has elected a mayor who is not FLDS. We lived in Cedar City Utah for 8 years, and I would have had no qualms about asking someone in the store if there is a garage near by. Also, the FLDS often have a small cash business they run from home, and I wouldn't doubt that there are a few home mechanics there. Going back to Hurricane (yes, they do pronounce it "Hurcun") was reasonable since Colorado City is half way between Hurricane and Fredonia. We also lived in Yuma, which gets hotter than Las Vegas, and car batteries last about 1 1/2 to 2 years there, so 2 1/2 years is really pushing the limit of the battery.

Been there, done that, with alternators going out, while on the road. But this has happened to me only in the mountains and hills of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. NOT in the remote Southwestern landscape! You're good at problem solving, though. And you had some good folks helping out, too. All's well.

I used to work in a call center that did roadside assistance and we served everywhere throughout the US. The way it works is the towing services have to agree to be part of the program. It was very difficult to find a towing company willing to go out during the middle of the night when people are stranded in the snow or flooding areas...and they will change a tire but if your spare tire needs air put in it, then you're out of luck and will need towing to the nearest town. Best thing to do is to call a local company...the towing can still be deducted from your insurance.

Quick way to test an alternator is to disconnect the battery once the engine is running. If it keeps running the alternator is good..This works on old school vehicles without all the electronics, but see no reason why it wouldn't work on the newer stuff.
