Race seven of the America's Cup Match and did Emirate Team New Zealand just break out a previously unseen manoeuvre mid race to secure a split and overtake from Luna Rossa?
We take a deep dive in to exactly what is special about this turn and how they achieve such a high turn rate with only one board down.

So... what are we going to call this new manoeuvre? Pirate Pete? One legged J-K? I need your suggestions!

Most people in New Zealand assume the acronym 'JK' refers to a former rugby player and author (John Kirwan). So definitely needs a new name.

So its sorta, like weight loading a race car, where right before you put on the brakes, you roll a lil outside, wait for the inertia outside, then, pull hard to opposite, squeeze the brakes, wait for the weight to even, & accelerate through? So you can tell that your becoming a huge YT star, asking for subs, likes & bells! Getting to your head ey? Listen mate, who cares. You are not a sellout. You didn't start out asking for views. Don't let that discourage from acquiring you dues. You were just a humble channel, having a discussion about the thing you love. It is that what gives you your popularity. Passionate, factual, expert content. Well deserved my friend, & I'm excited & ecstatic for your success. Your damned right, it doesn't make a bit of difference. Genuine does. Keep it up brother. You da man.

Hey your efforts make a huge difference, adds so much. Great to all when such core data is being shared including to us. A team only gets any advantage once! Fantastic, hopefully the AC75 stays as the Americas Cup boat for a decade or 10. Let's see maximum evolution, what we've seen so far in these boats is outrageous and exciting.

Wow, I was impressed with the lifting and ‘leaning’ on the leeward foil for the rolltack, but to do it for a JK is really ballsy. It’s all so dependant on getting that boat hull rolling absolutely right to get maximum force or ‘grip’ as you call it onto the foil. Hats off to team NZ!
@ikerstges
@ikerstges 3 жыл бұрын
I think their flat foil shape plays a major role to pull this off opposed to the V-shaped foils on Luna Rossa.. awesome analysis! 😎

Hi Mozzy. Thanks for this further analysis of the rolling tack technique. ETNZ are really showing the rest of us how to get into the detail and what is required to win. Roll tacking at 40knots in complete confidence of your hardware. Looking to be in complete unison with your boat. Tis truly beautiful racing. The devil is definitely not wearing Prada in Auckland!

Good spot and good explanation. I noticed the extra heel and actually thought it was a mistake an that they were potentially going over. I hadn't noticed the foils. Only ever played in small dinghies so I love your technical explanations. Understanding makes watching more interesting. Thanks.
@AngusMcIntyre
@AngusMcIntyre 3 жыл бұрын
These boats are miles apart from any other sailing vessel so its pretty tricky for us all to get an idea. The 2 canting foils are another dimension entirely. As a windfoiler, I can have a guess at where the balance points are, and how they might compensate for it, but ultimately we will probably never know just how technical these boats are.
@damientelle
@damientelle 3 жыл бұрын
Mozz, Great work to collect and show the data ! i think you agree with my comment about the previous video and heel angle. the 10deg heeling is also reducing the lateral wind force vector (by cos (heel deg) ~ 2% if heel=10 deg ) which during the first phase of the JK is added the lateral G-force. This is typical maneuver with ice boat/sandland yacht: OK nothing to do with AC75 but same input : speed > 30 nds, high lateral G-force, limited counter lateral force induced by the skate. Thus if possible we launch a JK by heeling up, moving the wind force vector downward, which reduce the lateral force and thus the drag induced by the skate during first turning phase

Hi Mozzy Sails! It's getting more exciting towards the end now. We even saw some real match racing, didn't we. But until now, if you guys hadn't provided this incredible analysis and background information, I think I would have hung up and stopped following the America's Cup. Huge thanks for the great work and the professional presentation. I hope this is your ticket to the ETMZ strategy team for the next AC... ;-) Highly merited!

Great commentary, discussion, and insight. To your point, unfortunately while a bit of bad luck, Luna Rosa lost race 8 on a mistake. In the light air, they accidentally ventilated the foil (you can hear Jimmy saying “a lot of cavitation boys...”). The foils at all speeds on that boat do not create cavitation (the design and engineering ensure this does not occur), but putting the flaps all the way up to try and create lift does - thus they came in with the flaps fully up on the foil causing the cavitation and losing lift such that the new foil had no chance as they had already stalled. Dean Barker (of all folks) pointed this out during one of the commentaries before Race 9. Really interesting

They tried to do the same manoeuvre against the USA during the World Series, they had a huge skid out and fell off the foils, so they have learnt the cant/heel trick since then to refine the turn
@MozzySails
@MozzySails 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, see my previous video on the tacking. They weren't micro adjusting the cant system back in the ACWS. This is almost certainly something they became aware of after watching the other teams (and INEOS complaining about the FCS issues).
@damientelle
@damientelle 3 жыл бұрын
haven’t notice this new way of JK ! but as said in previous comment, this is why the T-shape has a advantage, as long as you manage to control properly your kant. Guillaume Verdier (french architect, member of ETNZ architect team since 2009) was nearly given the explanation during a french interview. But he did stop before the full answer ..... In top i think ETNZ arm profil is much more asymetric at his underwater part, keeping both board down with a high turning rate can probably induce a bad angle of attack for the inboard foil. I think the one leg JK is something foreseen by the design team, but until now the sailing crew wasn’t taking the risk.

More great analysis, thanks! I'm still reeling from seeing Luna Rossa 2 km and 4 minutes ahead tell themselves "At least 28 knots before turning" and then going into the move at 27.5 rather than spending a few seconds and a few meters VMG building speed to their own stated minimum. ETNZ, once they got foiling again, were super disciplined in doing whatever it took to get 30 knots before turns even when it meant 0 VMG for a few seconds before the turn and again building back to 24 knots after the turn. The biggest risk ETNZ seemed to take was dropping to 22 knots pinching up to get around the mark while passing the floundering Luna Rossa.

Hell yeah. A physicist who knows squat about sailing watching this can totally appreciate it (that's me), it's juicy physics. Plus, if you know any sport, that high degree cant and massive heel seemed risky AF, but the sort of thing high performance sport rewards if you execute it perfectly. Awesome technical analysis as always, love your channel! Would just like to say, Kiwis have been at the forefront of different (odd) things, like the Bob Semple tank. We do things differently and look outside the norm, and make good with what we have available. The old number 8 wire thing, "You can't do that, it is impossible." Kiwis answer, "why not?" So, is the new manoeuvre now called a BK?

@mozzy sails - thanks for the interesting videos, have been watching religiously and appreciate the research. I was wondering whether the heel you identify, (even after discounting the additional cant), lets them bury that large extended white fairing section on their foil vertical? If so, this might be giving them considerable extra lateral resistance to help them hold the turn with only the one foil in?
