Foil sailboats are crappy and unable to use for anything else besides racing.

This stuff is amazing. But its not sailing. Its flying. Or something in the middle :) However if it adds to the sum of human knowledge Im all for it.

Throw in an AHRS, and fluxgate. I think a couple of sensors will do the trick. Leave the overall strategy up to the pilot. Two second delay does exist with the AHRS.

I liked the days when sailboat racing was about strategy and they had to fly a spinnaker downwind this new racing is quick and done 15 minute races.

Oh that music... talk about culturally insensitive. Barcelona is in Catalunya, not Analucia, cringe worthy, as in "Hayling is like Hawaii". Fixable? Best view of INEOS dock outs are from the 5th floor terrace bar on top of the Museu de l'Historia de Catalunya. Plan B, if you are self employed, for 50€ you can join Tech Barcelona (100 startups next to the museum) and use their roof terrace. Best food with view of INEOS at La Mar Salada. Order table by window on top floor.

Very complicated boats, and it seems that this means there are going to be grey areas. For instance they need to have control systems for the ride height that react faster and better than any human. Is that considered a kind of autopilot or not? We know that there is far too much data for the helmsman and strategist to respond to, so automation has to come in otherwise these boats are unsailable. Another complication is that once the computers have been set up, it is virtually impossible to read the code back to figure out what exactly it does. Will the organisers have to scrutinise the code on every boat to ensure that there are no transgressions into sailing autopilot technologies. I'm glad I'm not a race organiser. I'm sure as a AC skipper, what they would love is a boat that largely sails itself, barring a few nudges on the wheel and a couple of button presses per tack, so that they can focus out of the boat on what's happening tactically on the race track. Is this we want out of a Yacht Race? When I started sailing, all I had to coordinate were two ropes, centreboard height, body position and the telltale in conjunction with reading the wind, waves and current. It was very visceral and physical, and mostly quite slow. I do enjoy watching these Formula One boats racing, I like innovation but I don't want to see cheating.

Great insights Tom. I love Barcelona. Easy to get around using Google maps and the great bus services. Lots of relaxed outdoor architecture to enjoy including the Sagrada familia and Park Guell.

Perfect information from 2 seconds ago plus an amazing autopilot might be better than human perception in real time with human input.

bikes on which you lay are lot more efficient then the ones you sit on.. would also help aerodynamics on the deck..

Love the design concept direction of American Magic. Minimalism is a very worthy focus, Luna Rossa also looks sleek as hell. It looks good and looks fast! But the proof will be in the pudding!
@jimheaven4 күн бұрын
If it doesn’t look right, it isn’t right. It’s clearly not as aerodynamic as the competition by some margin, that’s a massive red flag out of the blocks at 50km/h. Especially when the hull is going to be flying out of the water for 100% of a winning race. I don’t buy your displacement mode ‘foil angle of attack’ theory to get on foil earlier. The boat is 75ft long! What advantage? 1 degree? The angle change will be minimal. Better to have an arrow through the water to get water moving over the foil as quickly as possible for early foiling. All the wetted surface area fuss under the water is a sandbag, but someone thinks they’re being clever. I’m sorry, but if this boat isn’t a dog I’ll be as surprised as TNZ. I wish it looked like Luna Rossa or even America Magic. Even Red Bull is flying in 6 knots apparently. I wish them well, but I’m thinking this is the boat version of the Mercedes/McLaren MP4/10….

no, all my main videos will still be up on the channel (just waiting for French to launch and then will revisit the other boats again). However, I am putting up some additional content on Patreon and KZbin Channel Members. These are early video ideas and thoughts, plus some smaller details

I believe the angular section in front of the foils arm are designed to work like bargeboard used on F1 cars. Push airflow out wide, reducing flow under the boat, and increasing the ground effect and righting moment during flight. This is why the rear section looks like a diffuser and is angled up during flight.

My tip would be to grab hire bikes. There is a great cycle path all along the beach, and it will slice your time to get from dockout to the start area.
@ANDREWCROWTHER6 күн бұрын
Having visited two of the team bases so far I´d say grab a bike and some binos and get pedalling as this allows you to cover both team bases and the sailing beaches with ease. The best fixed spots would be the World Trade Centre or the newly opened square on the water directly in front of Luna Rossa which gives a direct view of the Italian and French bases while covering the exit and entry routes for the remaining teams. From Luna Rossa you are 2 minutes from Barceloneta beach. The bar next to the America´s Cup Experience gives reasonable views of Ineos and is also 2 minutes from the Swiss base. The French and America bases are very difficult to view unless you are on the water in Port Vell.

Brilliant info / production Mozzy! Thank you for this. This clip reminds me of the days we used to walk around the Viaduct checking out all of the teams bases. My wish is for TNZ to defend successfully and bring the cup back so I could see and feel the vibe / action one more time.

Hey man, love your channel. Was just sitting here thinking about how crazy it is what ETNZ have done, basically walked away from home advantage, alienated a huge amount of their fan base, but in the meantime they look about to grow the sport to new heights with the youth and women's cups/ac40s and just how good the main class is, taking it to Barcelona for more exposure and to make it easier for the other teams. It's a huge gamble but quite amazing what they have done. Thought you could make a great video about it
@MozzySails7 күн бұрын
It is a big talking point and I am sure a lot their kiwi fans will have an opinion. Personally, I think the AC40 looks great, and am excited to watch the youth and women's racing. And obviously as a European having the Cup here is easier than Aukland... not sure I would feel the same if INEOS won then defended overseas though

Loved the video. I'm already booked with my family to be there. Would like to know where I can find the daily schedule with hour-by-hour listing of events/activities/ceremonies for the Thurs-Sun races (22-25 Aug). For example, if the races are starting at 14:00 (I don't know, but guessing), what could I do/see if I was down at the site from 10:00? Could I meet any team members by just going to their bases? Did you check out the simulator? Is it worth the price (or is it not up and running yet)? Do you think you need to book a time slot in advance, or could you do it when you're there? Any info would be great.
