There's not many of your videos I've missed Phil so I feel confident in saying that must be one of father Phils finest comedic performances 😂 He gave you a right going over on the pumpkins. You'll have to get him back some day! Some nice looking crops, that beet is shocking clean, no wonder ye proud of it!

Neighbour had ten acres under plastic totally cleared out by the crows.Don't know what variety, but the supplier said it was something wrong with the dressing and it caused problems with 800 acres around the country. I love Father Phil's witty comments and Farmer Phil's determination to keep on subject and keep on reporting. 👍

We have two 12 acre fields in our silage ground. This year we put nitrogen on one after the usual slurry dosage, the other got no fertilizer and 500 gals to the acre more than the usual slurry dose. Both fieldd yielded about 20 bales more than last year's totals. I wouldn't do it every year but it goes to show that if your soul is maintained to good levels, it can handle a skipped round of fertilizer. It's not something I'd do every year though.

If you have crows working a patch of barley you should get a old sweeping brush and a buket of waste oil. Just gently sweep oil on the barly surronding the patch. The crows wont bite the straw to crack it down then.

Just a thought, look into trying sugar beet leaf silage. Might help to extend your diet feeding ration. I know it's not good to feed just sugar beet silage because of a chance of the cattle choking on it. Maybe in a mixed ration the choking hazard wouldn't be a problem. If you read this Phil, please let me know what you think. Overall, all of your crops look great with all the things you have delt with this spring! Keep up the great content, and the hard work!

I'd agree with the comment that the lack of fertilizer will have a long term affect, but if you replace it with other suitable nutrients it will be ok. Just takes more management. The vetch/oat ground cover works wonders over the winter. Keeps the soil drier let's the worms work more.

Grazing cover crops might harm soil structure if the weather turns bad. I have fed cattle on stubble a few different years and for 2 years after it will show in the following crop and I had subsoiled areas I thought had heavy traffic when supplementing them with silage before housing.. But the cattle fed on stubble before housing had no lag in daily weight gain after housing

I wonder Phil If you could use a compost tea for your crops, the ingredients are cheap and the results are great as the more fungus and air bacteria in the soil the better? You have the river for water which is better than tap and you need to pass air through it unless nettle or seaweed tea, I wonder if an old shop vac on blow for 24 hours would scale up?

Did u ever watch Sask dutchkid, dairy farmer in Canada, they cut the barley green before while grain is still milky and put it in a pit as though its grass silage, to me it makes more sense how ye do it to wait till its fully ripe, mighty fields of barley ye have, I would have thought even though maize without plastic had issues would have thought the heat of this year would have helped it trive better
