Hi Harry, I've no idea when the self impressionng tool was first made, however when I was working for a boss back in the '60's, we had that tool. The only "Ace" type lock we saw then was in fact the original Chicago lock - no copies. They were as you said, a very accurate lock compared to many copies we see today. The tool was hit and miss as to whether it worked from memory - could have been our poor use of the tool, or the close tolerances of the "Ace." I don't know, but I would think the infamous Bic pen trick probably wouldn't be successful on the "original" ...... Regards, Brian.
@TheOriginalFaxon3 жыл бұрын
when I was a kid I was obsessed with that trick, i tried hundreds of times to get it to work on any of the locks I had legal access too, to no avail. then one of my friends bought a cheap knockoff U lock one day, and handed it to me to try out while it was in the return period. I was able to open it in about 30 seconds with a Bic pen that had already been sized out to the size of the inner bits on another lock. A lot of them were actually made larger in the early days to prevent the trick, but with the help of a Bic lighter (i know right?), you could heat the plastic up and size it out a bit, then try again, until you got it to size, and then the trick still worked on some locks. After that I tried it several more times on other different brands of knockoff locks, and a few cheap kryptonite ones that people said were supposed to be using the same lock cores, and lo and behold they all opened just as easily. What got me though was the old freezer can trick. Someone used some kind of refrigerant can to freeze my hardened steel lock to such a low temperature, that they were able to hit it with a hammer and fucking shatter the shackle. I came out to grab my bike and it was just gone, with the lock sitting on the pavement, absolutely shattered to bits in one spot, but mostly still intact. I was in absolute disbelief. Stopped bothering to lock my bike after that, just brought it inside whenever possible. Then my mom put that bike outside around back, where i basically never go, and it sat there for probably a couple of years, i'm not sure, but it was supposed to be in the garage. Anyway yea that got stolen out of our yard, probably by an old set of gardeners or something who no longer work here, and I haven't owned a bike in years as a result.

The Bic pick method came into usage when Kryptonite switched to a much cheaper 7-pin cylinder lock. Formerly, they used ACE-II cylinders that utilized different spring rates. One of the 7 had a longer inner pin, which would bottom out in the end of the cylinder, preventing completely depressing that pair of pins. Also, the diameter was different and Bic pens didn't fit like they did in the newer, smaller cylinders. That didn't really matter though because the ACE-II lock wasn't susceptible to such easy picking methods. I left one with a locksmith for months and he couldn't pick it, whereas he could pick any of the 7-pin cylinders at the time that were not ACE-II.

You know this reminded me of my father saying the nuclear torpedos on the submarine he was on had big locking bands on them labeled "kryptonite" (this was like 50 years ago). He assumed it was the name of some sort of fancy alloy.

@RyuzakiRandomStuff they weren't nearly as powerful as what's available now. 18v brushless versions are now prevalent, whereas they weren't just a few years ago. What took over 10 minutes to cut through and open a Kryptonite NY Fahgedaboudit now takes less than a minute. I have a 20 year old Makita 14,000 RPM angle grinder that's really powerful, but it's corded. And yes, there have been gas-powered 2 foot diameter disc cutters for cutting things like railroad track. But they're large, bulky and expensive.

1970s also did not have portable angle grinders unless your bike theft tools also included a generator and a pickup truck to carry it. It was secure then and not today, Its a good view on lock history in a way, the constant arms race between criminal and security. Its a good thing lock sport exists as it kinda comes off like the white hat hackers who use the skills of gaining system access to help those with important data make more secure computer systems.

Anyone else get an ad for altor bike lock. You need a uhaul to pack that massive lock around lmao but it’s supposed to unable to be cut with angle grinder and a pick proof 8 disc disc detainer core. Alright LPL it’s time to check this one out. It’s got a steel inner shackle surrounded by 78mm aluminum shackle which I can attest as they say is extremely hard to cut with an angle grinder the soft metal clogs the blades.
