Your links are just as glorious to have as your instructional videos! Just bought radiator, shroud, & spacer 👍 My question is what ratio of coolant & water is best (I'm in Southern California). And what's the best way to get all the air out of the system?

Oh awesome thank you. Can't go wrong with a 50/50 mixture. If you have access to a purge machine, that is an effective way. Other than that, we use Funnel Buddies.

Ha Ha "Alf" I finally beat you on a project! My Flex fan grenaded into my (not very old) aluminum radiator this fall. Didn't notice one of my blades got bent, so my bad. Got a good replacement from Speedway Motors and a new flex fan from Summit. Could not reuse my beautiful shiny aluminum shroud, so running without until I fabricate one. It has not run hot though yet as I have two 8" fans in front also, but it looked so good on there. Oh, PB blaster 15 min ahead of removing old bolts has worked for me 90% of the time, but the hand torch is always on stand-by. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours. Blessings and cheers from Motown.

Thanks for the video. It is very helpful. How do you tell which way the fan goes? It appears that you installed it the opposite way than it was originally installed. is there an easy way to know which way to install it? Does the curve of the fan go towards the motor or does it go towards the radiator?

Hi Alf, Great video! I didn’t see you plug the transmission ports because of the manual transmission. Is it necessary or does the radiator come plugged?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 ай бұрын
I believe they come plugged but it would be a good idea to make sure to plug them if they do not come that way.

My factory 289 has the factory 16 inch radiator. No shroud. (Didn't offer a shroud from the factory for 16 inch radiators unless you had air conditioning). I want to upgrade to a 20 inch OEM radiator. Not aluminum. Do I need to male modifications on any brackets? Do I need to change to a different fan? Or does the same fan work in a 20 inch fan?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Жыл бұрын
Well I usually don't make modifications to these cars in that way. However Andy Kruse has a great video on modifying the radiator support to accommodate a larger radiator. I would check out his video to see if that's what you're looking for. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g321na1uo9ShZ5I

Hey Alf - I've just purchased a new Champion aluminum radiator from Jeg's, and I know many folks go with electric fans, I'm a bit budget-limited so trying to save that project for later. Having said that, my 65 inline 6 currently doesn't have a shroud for the fan. Do you know where I can find one, and should I upgrade to a 5 blade fan?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, So I've used the Scott Drake V8 fan shrouds on 6 cylinder engines before. The radiators for v8 and 6 cylinders mount in the same location. So you will also need mounting hardware. Keep in mind, the mounting brackets are different depending on how many rows your radiator has. Here are the links. amzn.to/3QfhSWx amzn.to/3WSelzO

What do you consider a "too hot" running temp for a 289? Last summer in 90 degree weather, my '66 coupe would hit 210 while idling at a light, but would generally run around 190-200 most of the summer. It has a four-core radiator with a 5-blade fan, but the fan is so large in diameter it hits any shroud that I attempt to install. I am considering going the ACP route with that shroud and a little smaller fan.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Well I think 210 is too hot. I also think having a fan shroud would definitely help to prevent that from getting that high especially when idling. The feature of the fan with the shroud is to concentrate air flow through when there isn't any natural air flow from driving. So yes I would definitely look into the smaller fan so it will clear a shroud and of course a shroud.

Would you recommend using the flex fan or going with an electric fan?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Жыл бұрын
If all other factors are good with your engine and cooling system, there shouldn't be any problems with a flex fan.

Hey thank you for all of your videos. Question I have. I have a 302 in my 65 coupe. With after market A/C with manual transmission. Should I be looking for a 1968 302 I see they are 24” vs 17” that came with original 289? But would 24” fit on car.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome. A 24" radiator would not fit without modification to the car. The 67 and 68 cars had a different radiator support.

Can you tell us why you went with the radiator brand you used? I ask because I'm not seeing any reviews for it on Amazon (good or bad).
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 жыл бұрын
This might be weird but I went for the style points. A lot of radiators are plain and flat on the top and I loved the look of this one's top. It actually resembles the original much better I think. But aside from looks, it's very affordable for a 3 core aluminum direct fit.

Once upon a time, the only options for aluminum radiators were paying top dollar from BeCool or a similar manufacturer. But I've actually had some good luck buying these Chinesium aluminum 3 core radiators. Have one on my 69 and my 88 Fox.

My 66 with original radiator, fan and shroud runs fine. So I think my radiator , water pump and thermostat are ok. But engine gets hot as soon as I hit traffic. Is an electric fan my solution?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be able to diagnose your car from here. But I'll tell you that you could start with better air flow. It doesn't necessarily mean to go electric fan. Maybe upgrade to a 5 blade fan? Whatever is easiest for you but start with something that gives you more air flow.
@umangu
@umangu 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlfsMustangGarage thanks! Already gone from stock 4 blade fan to stocky style 5 blade fan. I put in the shroud and recored the radiator. So now she runs fine in normal driving. It’s just when I’m in stop and go seems like the 5 blade fan and shroud aren’t enough.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Well that should be pulling enough air through. How confident are you in your radiator?
@umangu
@umangu 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlfsMustangGarage not that confident! It’s original though it has been recored. It works so well when I’m cruising though that I give it the benefit of doubt.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Well that's probably because it has more air flow and the water pump is turning faster. So the aftermarket shrouds really do a better job at hugging the radiators and concentrating that air flow. Also, when you upgraded your fan, it's pulling air through the radiator from the outside right?
