When he first started the house he started removing trees from the hill behind the house. Everyone watching even back then could see that the trees were not growing straight the base of the trees was slopping down while the top of the tree tried to straighten it self. That of course indicates that the ground was not stable but he knew better. Many of us encouraged him to build the house about much further down closer to the road. He did say he doesn’t read the comments and doesn’t take advice. He said in the beginning that he didn’t have any building experience and he was right. I unsubscribed when he put garbage can tin on the family home and then put brand knew metal roof on the “shop”. He is so full of himself.

Not to panic but you may want to keep everyone offsite until the risk of landslide has passed. Please consider your priorities for the year. Truly appreciate you sharing your journey and I wish you every success in protecting your wonderful family and the home you've built. This can be fixed 👍🏻 This too will pass. Probably should not have done all that excavation work last fall if you werent gonna have time or take the time to finish the project. Got to stay focused sometimes. When you do build your retaining wall, backfill it with clean rock and lots of perforated tile. Living where you do, i cant believe you havent bought an old road grader yet! One of those and your neighbor's excavator would go a long way to fixing that road...assuming the county let you do it

I don't want to be a know-it-all, but I wrote another comment on this last year. If your house survives this spring and the slope doesn't completely slide and avalanche because the earth is completely wet, you should urgently build a retaining wall, plant deep-rooted plants and create water channels to direct the water on the slope away from the house.

We have been saying this exact same thing Simon Says, for all the years we have been watching this entertaining channel from when they selected this hillside property. In comparison, we have a bit of a slope through our new yards (homestead purchased early spring 2022 and moved in last June). It is going to cost a couple of tens of thousands to properly put in French drains with retaining walls for 275 feet as this year's efforts. Earlier this year, we had grading done 80 yards above the house to the north as well as 3 culverts on our 2/10ths of a driveway to send that water coming from the crest of the mtn to a creek to our west. Yesterday (yes, on a Sunday) our superintendent of our work picked up 4 more culverts from a closed store (we paid them today Monday). This is a real effort for 5% then to 25% grade on TOP of a mountain, past our house, through our smaller orchard, through the aviary, past the barn, over the southern pass road and getting all that water to the creek 50 yards down hill from that road; water off the three buildings with new as of last year gutters and gutter guards via underground drain pipes and drain pipes running from the retaining walls ....... and I really think I learned to do this by watching that looming hill "behind" the house that had no choice but to collapse! God bless those enduring this inevitable flooding. With the way our weather is allegedly being manipulated it could most certainly be worse in future years.
@simonsays2774 Жыл бұрын
@@TiaraPoodles After all, he owns the entire mountain. He could also have built up near the top. The ground is much rockier there and he would never have to reckon with flooding or washouts. But he could also have built it right down by the road, where the land becomes flatter, then he wouldn't have had to remove so much of the mountain to get a flat surface for the house. Now it will be expensive. Fixing this slope afterwards will be much more expensive than before.

I live at 4,000' on the US/CA border. While this is an extraordinary year for most of the western US for sure, I commonly see this kind of road damage somewhere, most years. Most people build their roads with soil/dirt taken from the surrounding area and then put a 4" "base" of gravel and binder (hopefully) on top. When the weather gods decide this is your year to get a deluge, rapid snow melt or whatever, bye bye road. Road base made with 1+ feet of cobble base with broken rock 4"-6" (size) and then a finish layer of crushed 1" with binder 6" deep holds up much better with much of the road doing fine, and only a low focus point washing out. And with a true road base of rock, where it does wash out, much of the rock is recoverable, as it doesn't move that far. With dirt base roads, the dirt is halfway to the ocean with many dump loads needed to be brought in to rebuild the road. Dirt based roads are cheaper up front, but more expensive "down the road". : P
