After making this video...I sold the supraphonic! The Supralite kills.
@DZNTZ5 жыл бұрын
Not odd at all to me. The Supralite is the ‘phonic killer. Ludwig accidentally made a cheap snare that sounds better than its legendary big brother. Now, they’re not worried about it, because the snobs MUST have their Supraphonics (gotta have a baseball bat muffler if you want to be hip!) - it’s the one ‘everybody used’... But I play drums because they sound good, not because that guy played them. I don’t care where it was made, I don’t care who did or didn’t play it, I don’t even care if I fail hipster 101! The Supralite is a better sounding drum. Period.
@mattnewell54142 жыл бұрын
They sound similar because of the chrome plating. Chrome adds brightness. The Supralite has more cut because it’s made of steel which is a denser metal compared to the aluminum LM402. The Supraphonic is “airier” and slightly mellower because it’s aluminum, a less rigid alloy. It’s also the reason Supraphonics are so much fun to play, the softer metal has flexibility and adds natural rebound to rimshots. The only constructional similarity between the two drums, besides the bead, is the chrome plating. That’s my theory anyway. As an aside, chrome or the lack thereof, is why Acrolites sound exactly like a drier version of a Supra.

I tried a 6.5x14 Supralite and a 6.5x14 Supraphonic....I couldn't believe how the Supralite sounded like a Supraphonic...

The Supralites have an updated strainer/throw off and its actually fantastic. Its surprisingly one of the best throw offs ive used. I just bought a new 14"x6.5" and ive only been using it about 2 weeks but so far its fantastic. With the updated strainer its a no brainer purchase. Its my most tuning versatile snare for sure.

You can tell the difference by the lugs on the drum. The Supralite uses tubelugs. The Supraphonic has the Imperial Ludwig lugs.

Supralite HANDS DOWN. No comparison - the Supralite has a more resonant sound while still being tight and crisp, but not ringy, it’s got character. It sounds like a very high end metal snare, and it’s $200! The Supraphonic sounds fine on it’s own, but compared to a better sounding drum (like this Supralite) it shows its weaknesses - it’s rather lifeless, dead, bland. All things that generations of lazy sound guys might find endearing, but not so for a discerning drummer. Got a Bonham jones? Throw some tape on the Supralite. Great video, it needed to be done! Thank you for doing it.

Currently using a 6.5x14 Supralite (which I love.) The perfect bread and butter snare on the market in an affordable price range. That being said, I've always wanted a Supraphonic 402 and am currently in the market.

Dick Face I have one in 1970 Supraphonic in 5x14, (converted from a super sensitive because the wires are so awful), and I’m getting the 6.5 x 14 supralite. I don’t feel good having the same drum twice for almost $1000 in price.

2 completely different shells. Supraphonic is aluminum and Supralite is steel. Aluminum is great to acheive a dry, warm, controlled sound. Steel shells produce more ring, volume and cut. I have a 5" and 6.5" Supraphonic plus a 5" Black Galaxy (ceramic coated aluminum) and they have served me well over 35 years.

Very well! I actually sold the supraphonic. The Supralite gives me the sound I’m looking for and I don’t worry about it as much on gigs because it’s a cheap drum. Still have to deal with the strainer loosening up over the course of the gig but you get into the habit of checking it after each song.

My main kit as based around an Sonor AQ2 Safari...I'm partial to 13" snare that fit better frequency wise with the rest of the kit...played a 13x6 supralite and it kills...same feel under stick...classic ludwig sound...until they make a 13 acro or supra...it's supralite all the way.

Most YT drummer's that practice everyday at home (that can do this with really cool neighbors) like show off on YT instead of kicking back and try and play slow. This guy could never play Steely Dan, Pink Floyd Dark Side stuff etc. I used to be like this and just play 200mph

Be careful with them ears, man. I just spent my first six months drumming without ear protection, and I tore my eardrum! Now it's been more than FOUR MONTHS, and the middle ear is still not fully drained or pain free, so I don't get loud music anymore because I did exactly what you're doing. They have earplugs for music so the frequency response you get is still linear. Here I am, wondering if I'll be able to play again in a couple months when HALF A YEAR has gone by. Now maybe I could have lucked out and not gotten any fluid in my middle ear while it was perforated, and it would have healed much faster. But you try showering with your ear taped shut every morning for a month.

I actually use etymotic clear ear plugs (for musicians) which I highly recommend. I think they even sell them on amazon these days. Sorry to hear about your ear drum. All the best to you!

"The most recorded snare drum of all time". People always say it, but I don't buy that. Where's the proof? Did someone research every drum recording session in the world since the dawn of time and find out what snares where used? Come on. It's bs.
@shawnziemann3336 жыл бұрын
Ppl come to this videos to hear the instrument being played. Not 5 minutes of talking then when you finally get to the sound test you really should of captioned which snare was being played. Finally during your 5 minute intro you mention that you get an extra half inch of depth with the supralite? Not sure if your aware of this but Bonham played a 14x6.5 supraphonic. Both drums are available in the same 3 depths.
@midifortress1706 жыл бұрын
Scroll ahead to 4:03 to hear the snares! They have two different drum heads. The supralite has a slightly yellow, modern vintage aquarian and the supraphonic has a coated white remo ambassador. Yes, I'm aware that Bonham used the deeper supraphonic snare but the "character" is the basically the same having all the same exact features/components otherwise. To be clear, the supralite is 5.5" in depth, whereas the supraphonic is 5".
