Being a retired airline captain I would not advise flying any aircraft where a single point of failure would cause loss of life. Single engine operation is ill advised is that kind of weather in my opinion. Awesome video - however, I would not have done the same... I am a CFI / CFII so please take this as wholesome advice... if you had an engine failure or any other issue that would force you back to the departing airport, you would have been in trouble. RVR minima for the approaches are .75 - 1SM so you would not have been able to land back... it is one thing being by yourself, or your own family, but have 5 pax + you, is irresponsible IMO. Try to stand up against the pressures of being PIC. You are a fantastic pilot, make good videos, but this one should have been a No-Go.... Blessings.

Robert G - I’m with you. I am 17000+ hour ATP in a modern jet with a Piper for fun. That weather is barely legal with a HUD and two jet engines. I would NEVER have taken off in that in my Cherokee. I was hired to fly Addison Tx to Wichita Kansas, which both were reporting 800, in 1993. OKC was 200 and a half. I told the pax we had to wait till OKC was better. Forget shooting an approach if things bad, engine out gives you literally seconds from breaking out to hitting the ground. I wanted at least 600 and 2. I was flying a PA46. Very sketchy situation. Great point about activating the vectors to final early. I did that recently then got put in a hold at the IAF, which wasn’t there anymore! @MalibuFlyer2 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin. My personal opinion is that when it comes to cost, performance, and efficiency, nothing beats the '84-'88 PA46's. I do like the M350's but given a choice, I would opt for the early Continental powered Malibu. Unlike the 3 blade props, I have observed a significant improvement in the MT 4 blade over the original 2 blade. It's noticeably quieter.
@colinbryant89692 жыл бұрын
@@MalibuFlyer Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated. Having seen you flying in some pretty big storms, I would imagine the weather radar on the M350 would have helped? I have heard lots of speculation that the Continental engines on the early Malibu's were a little tempramental? Your opinion? Are the new Lycoming engines not more reliable?
@MalibuFlyer2 жыл бұрын
@@colinbryant8969 The ability to see where the weather is as opposed to where it was is always best. I can only speak to my personal experience with Continental which was positive, if managed properly. If you agree that the two things that kill engines are heat and pressure, then the ability to operate lean of peak at ~15gph with CHT's well below 380 is a benefit. With properly managed mixtures, there is no reason for some of the valve guide issues that some experienced with Continental.

Just know Corey, there are people out there that you have never met, that believe in you, your skill as a pilot and what you do for so many others. Again my heart bleeds for you! But I lift you up feeling blessed knowing that you are OK and will recover from this.

Nice video, cool to be able to see the prop wash in action. What is the minimum RVR you are allowed to depart in? I had visions of the fire being at the BBQ place!

No visibility minimums for an IFR departure under part 91.

Speaking from the perspective of a professional pilot who takes his responsibility to his passengers as PIC very very seriously. I hate to be “that guy” but doing this kind of flying an a light single is going to get someone killed eventually. Mechanical failures and pilot errors are not a matter of if, but when. Therefore, for every flight we need to be mindful of our primary, contingency, and emergency plan. Doesn’t seem like there are any account for anything going other than perfectly. Remember as a pilot on command each of the lives of the people on that airplane are YOUR responsibility. Maybe I am missing something as to what your backup plan/plans for the flight, especially the takeoff, were if something went wrong. I think there is definitely potential for a good conversation about ADM and Risk Management that can benefit anyone who watches this video and cares to read our comments. Looking forward to your response. Respectfully, Riley

I have eaten BBQ in at least 8 states that claim the best BBQ. All of them are correct - cause the best is good Q that I am eating at the time. I was born in Texas, but the best pork ribs I have ever had were in Gainesville Fl not Memphis TN for example. Beef? Lots of Texas places make great BBQ but so does KC. Alabama and both Carolinas make great pork while I haven’t had much decent pork in TX. Had som Cubans in Miami cook a pig that was beyond belief. Had a couple of snouts in IL of all places. So it really is what you have available, not where you are. Just saying…..

I love BBQ also but would think twice before DRIVING in that pea soup much less flying (with family) for some. That's why they make home bbq's. (Get some good apple or cherry wood.)

I watched the whole thing, full screen, before reading the comments. Not a surprise, some criticism about doing it in a single with the “what if the engine fails” warning. My concern is the RVR, even if the airplane is operating flawlessly. 600’ viz at 50, 60, 70 knots? I wouldn’t drive a car at 70mph in visibility like that. I my area I would worry about a deer standing on the centerline, or a darting coyote. The tower can’t see the runway either, so who knows? Low ceiling - in “in the soup” before the gear is completely tucked up, OK. The leeway under part 91. But when the wheels are on the ground, I want visibility to be at least equal to my realistic stopping distance. Love your channel. Overall, pretty good stuff. Thanks for sharing your flying with us.
