I wasn’t an EMT before joining so I can speak for the emt phase. It sucks, but if you study the material in the books and use different emt study apps or websites and take practice tests you will pass the NREMT. keep your GPA up as best you can so you don’t have to go to study hall. That keeps you out of morning pt and if you don’t do pt you’ll struggle on the pt test, and if you don’t pt on your own like I did, you’ll have to retake the pt test until you pass. Work on the all skills, especially the medical and trauma assessments. Go through scenarios with your roommates or friends so you don’t fail and get recycled. I had a lot of friends get recycled for those tests. Once you make it to whiskey phase do your best to memorize the steps of the CCA and you’ll be golden. EMT is by far the hardest and most boring part. Also the lack of sleep will have you dozing off in class, even while standing up. Just basically stay awake and push through until you earn that MOS-qualification.

I remember 68W school when I went in 2007, and the EMT portion was challenging. I actually ended up getting recycled after getting less than 80 percent on two tests. After that, I buckled down, applied myself, and passed all the tests; including getting my NREMT on the first try. Long story short, you cannot just drift through and become a 68W without trying. You REALLY have to earn and want it.

You guys have it made with your barracks rooms and beds. Back in my day you were in a big bay with bunk beds lined up all the way down. You did a great job explaining the whole course! Chelsea Vargas Just take every day as a new challenge. Basic is going to suck, but the best piece of advice I can give you is to not lose a good attitude and have a good sense of humor. It’ll be a long ten weeks, but in hind sight, it really is not that long of time. Don’t quit. Trust me, it is much quicker just to get through basic training than it is to quit halfway through and then get out processed out. I knew people that quit and left weeks after I graduated. The two things that keep people from graduating is pt and injuries. Injuries aren’t very common so be sure you are doing correct pushups and sit-ups and always push yourself on run days. Good luck and keep me updated on how your training goes!

@TboneMMA5 жыл бұрын
Cotton Mouth Don’t worry about reclassing. Just pay attention in class and don’t fall asleep (that may be harder than it sounds sometimes). If you have the ability to grasp concepts quickly, that’s great and some people have success with that. But I don’t want anyone to rely only on that ability. In the event you do have to reclass, you do get some options based on the needs of the army, but odds are you will either be refueling, cooking, or reloading artillery. Not taking anything away from those mos’s, but they don’t even compare to medics!

There is always ways to get on the line by volunteering for airborne or rasp if you meet the 270 with 90 in each event on the pt test, but in terms of going to the hospital, it is just luck of the draw. I'll tell you what though, wherever you go, whether that's the line or in a hospital, you will be surrounded by many people that have the same passion for medicine and you'll learn a lot. Jacob Johnson that is certainly a factor going into this job. There’s a lot of things that you may have to experience that the normal person might not be able to deal with. You, in a good way, have to be a little crazy to do this job. But on any given day you may have to help save your bleeding friend and may not be able to bring him back. It’s just the reality of the job. Knock on wood, but I’ve never had to do that, but I’m prepared to do so if I have to. It’s just the nature of the job. I will always push this MOS because I truly believe that it is the best MOS in the army, but I will never push someone to take this job that won’t be able to mentally handle it. I have seen the effects that this job can have on people and I will never wish that on anybody. If you don’t think you can get past that side of the job (btw, admitting that does not make you weak in any way), I would not encourage it. But if you can, it is the best MOS in the army and I will always push people to do it!

Hey there! Thank you so much for this video. I’m currently trying to sign as a 68W and have my National EMT certification, however it’s been a few months since I’ve gotten it, and will be several more months before I deploy. So I’m worried most my emt knowledge will have left me. Did you find it difficult to go straight to the whiskey phase? Did they ask you questions from the emt phase or is it just basic knowledge I may already remember?
@halenesong55293 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for the video. It was veryyy informative. I am graduating hs next year, and am thinking about being a combat medic. However, one of the main things that confuse me about this MOS is the various paths that you can take after training. If you could roughly summarize them, it would be awesome. (I also understand that you chose to go to airborne school. What brought you to that decision?)
@TboneMMA3 жыл бұрын
During training, if you have the proper PT scores and test scores in class, you had a choice between airborne school or rasp. I chose airborne school because... well it sounds cool to jump out of planes and I wanted to be in an infantry unit. And I don’t regret my decision at all. Rasp is the selection to become a 75th ranger. I chose to go to airborne school first before rasp because if you fail rasp you will not go to airborne school and then you are just needs of the army at that point. I went to airborne school and perhaps I would see a rasp recruiter after, but once I found out I was going to fort Bragg I wanted to go there. I am very happy with my decision and it worked out very well for me.

Did you have any prior service people in your class? And if you did can you elaborate on how they were treated in comparison to you. And what they were allowed to do and not allowed to do
@TboneMMA5 жыл бұрын
Yes, we had a few prior service. They essentially had to do PT with us, then got released for breakfast and shower, then had to be at class, then were released for lunch, then resume class until the end of the day. After class was over they were released for the night. They also had their weekends off as well (which a weekend in San Antonio is absolutely outstanding). Other than that they were still in training status so they are treated just like everybody else during training hours. They also did the full Camp Bullis and are usually put in leadership roles. I can't comment too much on the barracks they stayed in, but I believe that it was two to a room. Even though they had a lot more freedoms than a lot of the regular trainees did, the days are so long and vigorous a lot of their free time is spent studying and resting.

I’m a paramedic looking to become a flight medic. I’m assuming it’s fairly easy since I’m already trained.
@TboneMMA4 жыл бұрын
Myles Mace you would think but that’s not how the army works. By having paramedic you would need to go to basic and ait still (btw you would skip the EMT portion of ait and be able to come in as an E4). After you get to your unit you need to do the packet and do the flight medic physical, then receive a class date for critical care since you already have paramedic. After critical care you would do flight training at fort Rucker then you would be a flight medic. I just got my paramedic cert and was in the middle of getting my physical done when basically everything was halted because of the virus. Even with paramedic it can still take about 4-6 months or longer to get a class date for critical care at the moment because it is so backed up right now with an influx of flight medics. When I was going through ait they were trying to pull people that were already paramedics to go through critical care out of AIT, but it never worked out. Now, I knew a guy that was a paramedic that had a contract with his national guard unit to go immediately through the flight medic pipeline out of ait, but that is a very rare case. At the end of the day, if you are willing to be a medic for a solid year after ait before having the opportunity, then I would recommend it. Unfortunately that’s kind of how it’s looking right now, it could change but that’s how it is right now.

Badger Nooo That is very great and ambitious goals at a young age! I was very similar to you! At your age it can be tough, but look into EMT programs in your area, that certification will get you far in your combat medic career. If you’re interested in just learning more about medicine in general, I recommend crash course anatomy on KZbin. It’ll give you a great foundation in human anatomy before you try and branch off and do more with medicine. But first things first, get your NREMT certification and make sure it stays valid before you join the army and talk with your recruiter about the ACASP program. You’ll come in as an E-4 and will skip half of your training and go straight to the field care phase on combat medic ait. Also, if you’re in high school, definitely try to take anatomy, biology, and other science classes while in school. Try and apply for AP classes related to science and anatomy. They’ll help you a lot with your understanding of the human body!

I honestly had 0 desire and didn’t want to see combat at all. I’m here for the college benefits lol. How are my odds looking for that shit

@TboneMMA4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. It all depends on the unit you are going to. I am in a line unit and I do a lot of both medic and infantry stuff. But the odds are about 50/50 of going to a line company or to a hospital from my experience. But either way, the line or a hospital, there are benefits. On the line you have a much wider scope of practice while in the hospital you really only take vitals and might do some patient assessments if the provider allows you to. There are benefits to both.

So I watched your video about a year ago. Took your advice and got my EMT-B cert... taking my NREMT in January. I'm wondering would it be worth it to take my Advanced EMT course and NRAEMT. Only way I want to join the army is to become a flight medic. Would that help in order to be considered a flight medic faster. My age won't allow me to become a paramedic in time. Turn 33 in March and army cut off is 34.
@TboneMMA5 жыл бұрын
Efren Castaneda unfortunately, having advanced EMT won’t aid you for flight medic in the army. They only look for paramedic. There are some unique circumstances where people enlist for flight medic with national guard or reserve aviation units. If you can get in contact with one of those recruiters that will be really the only way to be a military flight medic on your initial contract. You can also enlist and try to take a paramedic course with your unit or and then apply for flight. That usually will get you pushed through the process more expediently. The only other way to apply for flight is to go through the normal pipeline, but that is backed up with applicants so usually that is something that a person would get when they re-enlist after their first contract.
@efrencastaneda18635 жыл бұрын
@@TboneMMA thank you. I was actually thinking the national guard as in more time because their cut off age is 35. That could allow me to become a paramedic. But their tuition is only like 20k for college. Can you do 68w on a two year contract with the army full time?
@TboneMMA5 жыл бұрын
Efren Castaneda I believe so, but it all depends on what kind of contracts are available. That would be a question for a recruiter. If you do join the army for two years, you would not be able to go flight medic because you have to commit to being a flight medic for at least two years after your training is over. I would not recommend a two year contract anyway because I believe you need three years to qualify for the full GI bill if you intend on going to school.
