Hi John, thanks for making football great with Chelsea. You, and the whole Chelsea team from 67-72, have been firmly imprinted in my brain for the last 50 years. And I still love watching all of these old clips - and the only thing I would change from those days is the quality of the pitches!

Yes, the All Time Average Attendance list is slightly scewed but one thing is not and that Chelsea recorded the highest average attendances in the country for 8 seasons prior to WW1. They also set a number of attendance records right up to '60's. So all this bullshit about 'third rate' and 'small club' is exactly that, bullshit from loons who define a club by a few dodgy seasons in the 80's. And yes, money was siphoned away from the club for years but oh, the irony for Arsenal fans to scoff atm
@mizofan6 жыл бұрын
Right, the most amazing loyal supporters through thick and thin of any club in the world probably. Nearly 83,000 v Arsenal in the 30s, well over 100,000 v Dynamo Moscow just after the war. Big crowds in the 2nd division in the 70s, including 55,000. And it was the level of support, as well as being in the Champions League and having won recent trophies, that led Abramovic to pick Chelsea.

@razer4660 He's a complete tool. Funny how Chelsea were nothing before Roman yet here we are in 1970 walloping the Goonies on their own ground! BTW, we finished 3rd that season, they finished 12th. We were also getting attendances of 40,000-60,000 back then. You know, all those fans we never had before Roman, lol.

You should have said if you wanted a laundry list. Chelsea were always big spenders. In fact we were the reason the transfer deadline was introduced after the board spent a then-unheard of £3000 trying to avoid relegation in 1910. Whether the money was spent wisely is another matter entirely but it was spent nonetheless. So wrong again. As I said, best not to get into an argument with someone who knows more about this than you.

You are dreaming old son. Arsenal did come in The Shed a few times but NEVER took it. West Ham and Man U did though, and Nottm Forest came in once with numbers too in the late 60s. I was in the North Bank Highbury with Chelsea in 1968 when we took the entire narrow back section and stayed there the whole game. Won 1-0 (Houseman). Arsenal had a good mob in the late 60s and 70s but we did well against them. Chelsea battered Arsenal in the Shed in '74 and they never came back.

Against Wigan and Bolton recently there were thousands of empty seats around the place despite Arsenal strangely recording them as sell outs. You got 13k vs Boro 82, 14k v WBA 86, 15k v Wolves 82, 16k v Coventry 88, 15k v Forest 86, 16k v Coventry 86, 17k v Newcastle 87, 16k v Man City 83 etc, yet would get 40k+ for ManU or Spurs. We're also only one place below you in the all time attendances table, which is impressive given you've historically been a lot more successful than us.

I bow to your superior memory, Ido remember West Ham coming up through the Bovril entrance and getting run out also the whole of Man U disapearing from the North end in a mass exodus from just a few Chelsea. having said that I cant remember Chelsea being in too much trouble at home..maybe its my selective memory! Thanks

Good gawd. Such amazing ignorance and baffling irony displayed by a few gooners below. Firstly, Stamford Bridge was an existing athletics stadium (the home of London AAC) when it was bought. Fulham were approached to be a tenant club because they had planning problems at Craven Cottage and The Bridge was a far bigger site. So Chelsea were born. Let's face it, lots of well known football clubs were created by established cricket clubs to use pitches through the autumn and winter months.

I wouldn't expect a Gooner to understand what franchising is. Especially one who bleats about me talking about stuff that happened a long time ago (ho hum). Being a prototype MK Dons with more name changes and ground moves than you had empty seats against Bolton is as much your history and tradition as the marble halls or Nick Hornby. The Emirates is soulless, and it's either tourists or real fans who are attending matches disguised as plastic seats....
@FlaviusConstantius12 жыл бұрын
@ViceCityDJ Perhaps if Chelsea had changed their name 3 or 4 times, relocated to the other side of London, bribed their way into the First Division and had a manager and a chairman banned from football for corruption, you'd think we were a "proper club with a history". Arsenal have never been a real club. Boring Arsenal and Highbury Library stereotypes don't come about for nothing. Quite fitting they now play in a soulless bowl named after an airline and filled with tourists.
@johnfoley714612 жыл бұрын
Mate that isn't true. My first ever Chelsea game was in 1965. We won 3-1 and Chelsea took the North Bank unopposed (blue and white walking sticks were brandished!). I was also in the North Bank with Chelsea when we took the entire narrow back section in the game we won 1-0. Peter Houseman got the only goal right in front of us (1968). We stayed there the entire game. We also went in the North Bank for a cup replay game in the early 70s but we were overwhelmed by numbers and run out.

@chavmanx If you really didn't want to continue you wouldn't have typed out 3 more messages for me, lol. So, to clarify. Yes, Arsenal are a franchise, however much you try to fudge it. Yes, Chelsea were historically big spenders (I love how you think Chelsea spending big money doesn't actually count as spending big money!). And so it was Blackburn as well as Bolton where the Emirates was less than full? Even better. Cheerio now.
@cfcsteve8611 жыл бұрын
And if we're talking history lesson didn't you get into the top division by a rich buy buying you into it at tottenhams expence? so before you go trying to talk a good game how about thinking before you talk because there is a pot kettle black thing here. yeah go on name 5 london clubs with more support then and show facts rather then talk bullshit.

@chavmanx Actually the Chelsea board always invested in the team, 10k on Gallacher, 20k on Lawton and so on. Best not to talk about things you don't know much about. And it's funny being lectured about fake clubs when yours was the prototype Franchise FC, was rescued by a bent Fulham chairman, is synonymous with 'library' and 'boring', and now play in a soulless plastic bowl named after an airline. Quite fitting given that its mostly tourists in it anyway....

@ViceCityDJ From 1905 until the mid-70s we were consistently one of the top 5 supported teams in the country, through decades of winning nothing. That's proper support. Arsenal's fans are already deserting after 6 years of winning nothing. And I'm sure you also know that Arsenal used to get less than 20,000 for a lot of league games in the 80s, and you had a much better team than us back then. BTW, we had 1 or 2 fans in the Clock End in 84...

@FlaviusConstantius in what way deserting? we have a much bigger ground than you and still sell out, while you have problems getting SB full for champions league. getting less than 20,000 in the eighties? we got an average attendence of around 30,000 most seasons. only in 80-81 did we get under 20,000 for a home game more than once, and those were against brighton, luton and birmingham. not exactly crowd inticers.
@ViceCityDJ12 жыл бұрын
@FlaviusConstantius did you actually look that up? haha ok mate. the club records sales, the fact some twats put up theiir tickets for sale and can't be fucked to go to the game and no-one buys them is annoying but the least att we've got since moving in 06 is at least 45,000.
@ViceCityDJ12 жыл бұрын
i'm guessing its down to double standards. loads of clubs evolve throughout their history and change their names, just cuz you lot didn't it doesn't mean that you can act all high and mighty about it. i don't see how supporters of a club that was established purely for the purpose of filling a useless stadium no-one wanted can have a go at a club that moved north of the river 99 years ago to stay in business.
@springycfc113 жыл бұрын
Chelsea took the North Bank that day, no mean feat in those days and Arsenal were in the Shed at SB in Sept 69, they did'nt take it there were old bill 10 deep right the way down the shed separating the 2. Chelsea did take loads away, Never saw any mob in the Shed untill Mile end lot from West Ham in around 73/74...could have taken it anytime.Men against boys.
@springycfc112 жыл бұрын
Yes Barry. I always ended up in the North Bank when I went to Arsenal and not by choice. The ground used to bamboozle me. I was with a mate and feeling sheepish when there was a lot of jostling and the cry of Chelsea went up and the Arsenal legged it. Arsenal had a tough firm in those days. Around 73 ish they wouldnt come out to the Stockwell lot, whom I was with. The Man utd exodus that I was talking about was season 69/70 with 62.000 crammed in.
@BarryCFCOK12 жыл бұрын
yes in the 70's I remember Man.U coming in the shed in 1973-74 season but didn't last, Bristol City came in stood down the front and where escourted out after one song in 1975-76 season. But as for your comment about 1969-70 Chelsea taking the NB at Arsenal I didn't know that as didn't go to that match, Remember 1977-78 though

I was a North Bank boy 70-75 and never remember anyone "taking" it but West Ham ran through the upper concourse but kept running. That was pretty gutsy as Arsenal were pretty stiff back in the day. It was at least 10 to 1. I remember taking the Shelf I think in 73 but Spurs fought back but we stayed close. Cyril Knowles scored an own goal and we chanted nice one Cyril nice one son nice one Cyril lets have another one. We marched out of WHL with our heads high, no one touched us.

@razer4660 check your facts pre roman we went 20 odd times without beaten chelsea 1995 when hughes scored was the last timme you beat us ,then roman turned up and bought your success the only time you beat us regularly you had to spend millions so that does not really count and the last time you beat us at home in league was in mid 80,s when u used to get 10 thiusand at home games so you check facts you r a small club

@FlaviusConstantius ahh the old bribery argument. don't remember that being proved. relocating to keep the club from going bankrupt is wrong, but what about chelsea who might move south of the river to nine elms? is that fine? don't get the tourist jibe, your home matches apart from us, liverpool & spuds usually has the same atmosphere we get, to say otherwise is stupid. our club has 4 name changes. that comes with having a rich history. we didn't get given a stadium like you

l remember being at upton park feb 72,hereford utd (fa cup replay) nonleague club back then, it was during the power cut/3 day week era,they brought over 10,000 fans no yobs or boot boys just big miner types in rossettes and bobble hats, they made a lot of noise!....also league cup evening game 77 or 78?, low crowd, when 7-8 bradford city fans went down the front of the northbank, unfurled a BCFC flag while their mate stood on the wall, took a photo (kodak instamatic!!)...then fucked off. ha ha

I saw West Ham take the shed in 1971-72, 72-73 onwards until 1979-80 was the first time they didn't. Also in the 60's NF, Everton, Liverpool and Man.U came in the shed Although Forest got run Everton and Liverpool where in there all the game and so was Man.u in 1968-69 Norwich had a lot of fans in the shed in the fa cup (they had up to 10,0000 in the ground that day) but where not a mob just town people who came to watch the match (they where all down the front) more teams in the 1970's
@ViceCityDJ12 жыл бұрын
@FlaviusConstantius 69-70 chelsea had one of the best teams in their history since abromovich, one of the few times they had a decent side capable of winning something other than 54-55. yet arsenal still managed to win the fairs cup this season and next season we won the double. chelsea were always a fairweather club, established FOR the stadium which was already built that fulham didn't want. Arsenal were a proper club with a history that didn't rely on tourists.

@FlaviusConstantius back then chelsea were the glamour boys of london. a lot of their support was made up of daytrippers wanting to go to the city and watch a game, ask many chelsea supporters from back then, they were the stylish club, nothing to do with great support. As I'm sure you'll know chelsea hardly took anyone to highbury those days and their support diminished a lot during the late seventies and got relegated.
