@deborahmerkerson11454 жыл бұрын
Dick Dingwiza I wish I could have shared Otis with my dad. He died at 42 in 1964. He would have loved the soul music he missed out on. The last three years of his life didn’t afford him much time to listen to music, he was aboard ship most of the time. He did write us a letter from the Mediterranean telling us that there was this new group from England that we would be hearing about. That was soon before he died. He missed out on the Beatles too. The first LP I bought wasn’t the Beatles, it was Otis Redding. If you like this song, check out Robert Palmer ‘s cover. You might like it. His first LP was also Otis Redding. Palmer was straight up blue eyed soul.

Oh, man. The talent of the 1960s: Otis, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, Ray Charles, James Brown, James Carr, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson . . . and that's just a few of the great male vocalists. All of them great. This is one of those knockout songs. I was in a store recently and heard it on the radio. I wasn't expecting to hear it, but there it was. I couldn't move until the end of it: too powerful.

Back in 1968 at the age of 17 my cousin lent me an album, “This is soul” that was the first time I had heard of this unequalled soul singer. It was Christmastime and a year since his young soul was taken from us. I soon collected most of his records, and found a new love of music, which has never left me. Motown’s Marvin Gaye, was a close second for me, but Otis was and is still a soul singer that can never be rivalled. A voice so mature at a very young age, my God, what would he have achieved if he had lived? RIP great man.

There is a lesson I see often in these comments: we often miss how good music is because of generational bias or something, but if we listen 'again n again" that often turns around. An open mind will open all kinds of great stuff up to us. I always liked soul but now I love it. I listen to anything. That is another comment I see a lot. These days, the availability of music is astonishing. Balance that with *live* music and you are blessed.
