T7 community been on the pulse with this for awhile now. They were introduced to char tier lists in endurance sets (FT10 by the Korean players) which is a departure to chars in 2/3 tourney settings where even power bottom chars like Lucky Chloe are still fearsome because she's high/risk damage. And you only have so many rounds to adapt so if you can't play your clean defensive game, you are getting slapped around. People also knew about how certain chars are VERY strong in wood/teal low ranks just because their play style preys on those players lack of movement and defensive awareness. So you had the Williams sisters being able to climb pretty high until an opponent could defend their pressure and punish them accordingly.

I love this story. Recently my games design course has started hosting its own fighting game tournament because my lecturer and one of the other staff had a grudge to settle in street fighter vs x-men. Neither of them made it to the finals lol, with my lecturer losing to someone using Poison in USF4 who had never played fighting games before. It's finally given me the motivation to try and get better and show off my (currently non-existent) skills. I always look at tier lists as an estimation of the potential power of characters. When I look at the same characters from my perspective, I'm looking at it like "which characters will/do give me the most trouble and for what reasons?", which is a perspective that will shift over time as I improve. The meta of what I'm good at and what I'm weak against will always be evolving.

I think to young players, fighting games are actually very cool looking. We kind of undersell the cool factor of the games because we know how technical and complex they are (and we're too jaded by hearing all the complaints and scrub quotes). But as a kid who doesn't know the difference between a deep game and a shallow one, they won't be scared by the depth, and will be attracted by the fact that these games are cool, violent, and fast paced, with sexy and badass characters. I know that's what drew me in as a kid. What teenage boy could see a game with babes like Millia or Baiken and badasses like Zato or Venom and not want to play?

It's not just when you're new. A tier list is invalid for almost everyone except pros. And even then, a low-tier can win if the opponent has no experience fighting her. Tier Lists are extremely fun to make and discuss, but they aren't an excuse for winning or losing in a majority of cases

tier lists made by noobs is relevant for noobs though, skill floor is a thing
@keltzar13 жыл бұрын
I like how you said "her" when referring to a low-tier character. Are you thinking specifically of A.B.A. here?
@itraynell3 жыл бұрын
@@mattyryon I wouldnt really agree. Most tier lists for noobs simply place the characters by ease of use. They usually have a philosophy of "This character is easy to use and understand which makes winning with them easier so theyre top tier." But if you get a beginner that knows how to play a more complex character, that low tier is all of a sudden a huge problem because nobody understands how the character works so everyone starts getting bodied by that character.
@Luchamasterfit3 жыл бұрын
This isn't really the case though. Tier lists quite often reflect something other than top end potential strength. They also often represent a reward per time invested ratio. If you spend your limited time playing say, Anji, you will be weaker per hour put in because of the general weaknesses in his kit. That being said, character simplicity can skew this. A very difficult to play top tier like fox in SSBM, you may not reap as much value. However another top tier, like Falco, who isnt easy to play mind you, is incredibly rewarding as a reflection of time put in, because his general moveset is so strong. A tier list is an easy metric for people to see what will be the best use of their limited time. Sure Zain's Roy can beat 99% of the player base using the top tiers. However I would NEVER suggest a new player pick up Roy because the amount of time they would be required to invest would be dramatically higher as opposed to hell, 50% of the rest of the roster. If my goal is to hit celestial, a stronger tool makes more sense to most people. I can hammer a nail with rock, but its much easier to use a hammer and even more so just use a nail gun.

I think that perception of "you have to learn everything on the planet before you go play the game" is a weird but unfortunate by-product of getting older. Kids play to play, because they haven't completely integrated that mentality of being incredibly prepared for everything, whereas a lot of older players may have that kind of sentiment ingrained deep within them from, well, being an adult, where everything needs (and kinda expects) preparation and research if you want to do the best.

I did something similar to this a while back. I had to stay with my cousins for a few weeks, one sister and two brothers, and I happened to have skullgirls on my laptop so I decided to see if they'd like it. I told them about motion inputs, showed them how to do a fireball a charge back and let them have at it. I was playing fukua so I already knew they'd develope a meta of trying to keep me out. First week their picks were beowulf, big band and parasoul. Third week, the day before I had to leave they the beowulf kid was playing exclusively eliza (even though he was very against picking the girl character at first), the big band kid switched to beowulf trying to beat his brother and parasoul kid was nearly keeping me out with peacock. All characters with either big buttons or spammable moves. They naturally developed tactics to counter me and even eachothers playstlyes and were adapting to their meta as it changed daily. Although they did ban me from using robo fortune because none of them could deal with the faster projectiles. Its amazing how much improvement you can have in three weeks just with someone who knows the basics and a desire to get good enough to beat them.

That's more relevant than you think it is. Tier lists are based on knowledge and experience. The longer you play, the more you discover. The more you discover, the more your opinion may differ. This tier list story, along with yours, prove that tier lists don't mean much if you don't play the game for value other then leisure. Knowledge about the best character in the game (at that moment )only goes so far. And once that character goes down the list, the concern goes away. Playing the game for fun shouldn't care about who's the best character. It's in the third word of the last sentence. Fun.

First time I ever played a fighting game outside an emulator was at my aunt's house with Street Fighter 4 I played against my dad and I picked Ryu and spammed hadoukens over and over and he had no answer no matter who he picked. It got to the point where he outright said "if we're going to play this game, you can't pick Ryu" So I picked Ken. Then he stopped playing and I went to do the combo trials and failed miserably for hours Fun memories

Imagine if you picked Dhalsim and just walled him out with your arms. The rage would've been glorious.

This makes me wonder if the Teacher has ever brought his friend who also plays GG over during class, they fight each other and show their class some of the sheer craziness the game offers once they learn motion inputs, assuming they haven't already. That would blow the kids' minds to Space!

Having that match be the last thing these kids learn from the Teacher before summer would be so cool!
@halbarroyzanty29313 жыл бұрын
This is a genius way of getting kids to play the game. If you just ask them to play some old fighting game chances are they'd say no, but if you say they can play it INSTEAD of doing class they'll take it 100%, because anything is more interesting than class.
@t4d0W3 жыл бұрын
This also draws away that weird relationship of treating how to learn FGs like 'homework' like how some new FG players approach the genre now. The kids are thinking of the game reactively based on what they know and what they can execute and trying to win off that. They aren't trying to punish themselves hitting the lab and feeling bad when they can't hit the combo they practiced for 2 hours straight on netplay when they need more in game reps to get a feel for the game. They understand its a marathon and they wouldn't be committed to doing it if it wasn't for the point of having fun to begin with.

This is a very cool and wholesome idea! I love the internal meta and it reminds me of my early SFV games vs friends where we learned the game by just playing (it was all our first fgc game) and developed our own wacky metas that would change dramatically everyday thanks to someone learning a new move or strategy

Other thing to remember about tier lists is different regions can have different ideas of tiers even if they're still at a more experienced level. Yu was never bad in BBTAG in the western tier lists, but he was so bad in Japan they gave him a complete overhaul in one of the big updates. I also heard something about Hilda being top tier stateside but bottom tier in Japan but I tend to avoid tier lists in general so I cant verify that.
@ActionCow693 жыл бұрын
From what i've heard, japanese metas tend to favor strong neutral and characters with versatile options. Where a lot of western metas tend to favor tools to bypass neutral, and force the opponent to play the game your way. It's interesting.

I wish I could be in a local fighting game community... Oh my god having people live to play with, talk about the game casually, face to face, sounds so nice... I wish I could have a community like that

This is really interesting to me, because personally, I had zero fun with fighting games until I found out about trials. I hated hitting someone with a move and not knowing how to do anything after. Fighting games only became fun *after* I spent hours and hours and hours grinding combos. Then I tried to actually learn how to play the game.

Your the opposite of me, i try combos and setups in game, and rarely use training mode

Humans naturally like to just learn, even more so when there is no opposite force actively trying to stop what they are doing. Combo trials are great because you get to learn how to do something, as long as you are willing to put up with it. And all without any limits or adversarial interference. What is there to NOT enjoy?
@noobtuber103 жыл бұрын
@@ChimericWhite cant learn neutral that way
@ChimericWhite3 жыл бұрын
@@noobtuber10 That is obvious. Doesn't mean you can't just do the combo trials at any given time. This is a bit unrelated, but I've always hated how there's some weird aversion among so many people with just playing the game instead of just fighting human opponents and labbing.

This is exactly me. I get bored to tears if I'm fighting someone with no idea on what I'm supposed to do. Mashing buttons and having no foundation to build upon just wastes my time. When I have some foundation to improve on, THEN I have a lot of fun. I can feel myself getting better at what I'm doing, and learn more as I go.

I'm a teaching major, and if I ever get the chance to do this with students I am going to. I love fighting games, and I love sharing my love for fighting games with people who are willing to learn those games. If we could hang out on a free day and have a strive tournament or even some other game like third strike, that would be great.

Thats such a cool story. Alot of people all new to a game learning a developing a new meta. But also its probably way more enjoyable than school work, so its still a mostly positive experience even when road bumps like projectiles show up. Like even if you go 0/3 to some cheese no one understands, you can't be too tilted because its still a day off.

God what a cool teacher wish I could’ve had him This is also making me rethink my old character choices, how when I started I loved the big pokes and it was prevalent in all choices up until xrd where my play finally evolved from a basic level

God, this video takes me back to when I was in 8th grade and a teacher brought an mvc3 setup and we were all playing with simple controls. Dante was banned after a couple hours since everyone was using him. It's been 8 or so years so my memory is hazy, but the characters people saw the most success with outside of dante was Deadpool, haggar, Spider-Man, wesker, and viewtiful Joe. I kinda want to try an experiment now with people unfamiliar with the genre to see what meta they come up with

Reminds me of playing brawl in 5th grade. Some kid brought a wii on the last day of school and the meta was a disaster. Meta knight was top tier but not because normal meta knight stuff but because his rapid jab went all around him and noone could space attacks. The counter was projectiles and ppl didnt know how to do side bs so they went samus and ran away and spammed charge shot, then pit and zelda went way up but noone knew how to switch back from sheik so zelda players were effectively playing with 2 stocks and they could randomly turn into a effectively useless character.

Truly good tierlists don't matter at low levels of play. I'm a newbie UNIclr player. I once got bodied like 10 games in a row by Hilda, since I have no idea of what to do against her. I play with Wagner.

I honestly love this little story going on. I love to see the much younger generation getting into Guilty Gear and in such a fun way. I can't wait to see how they improve over time, maybe even the teacher could record footage of a tournament to see how they play during matches! (Also can someone maybe send the link to the Reddit thread. I wanna continue to follow this through the following months)

I played a few games of Strive again after like 4 months. I'd forgotten I had a floor 9 Potemkin, and was sure I was going to lose a lot. I figured floor 9 is like.....okay, right? It went about 50/50 even with my "3 hit combo or P. Buster", "megafist for movement", "I always forget about faultless defense" gameplan. It's nice to know there's other Potemkins out there just having fun and not knowing what the hell they're doing.

This was me and my tight pals for a long time in BB:CPE, We legit thought that Terumi was some legendary god for getting his meter in seconds then people like Hakumen where trash for having less obviously useful moves to new to fighting game players, and then, I became the ULTIMATE player in our little group through what I called... "The Snake Style", no not Hazama or Terumi... Azrael!!! I simply played Azrael and spammed his overhead and low heavy moves over and over, they covered insane range and for people with little to no reaction time, it was like an oki mixup every second where blocking just meant I did it again!!! I became the biggest fish in our teeny tiny pond of a few kids playing fighting games lol
