Excellent video, I am restoring an 88 pickup and wanted to replace the heater core O-rings. The hardest part was removing the passenger side HVAC vent. I found it will come out easily if an old credit card is made into a clip release. Bend the card 1/8” on one end, helps if the edges have a 1/4” radius, insert the card between the top of the vent and pad to disengage one clip then slide it over to release the other one, repeat for the lower clips.

Dude. You’re a life saver. (More like time and frustration saver, lol.) I have a shell of what was a 1986 extended cab in my garage. Parked it outside for 8 years after the head gasket blew. To get the heater core you need to remove that metal dash brace. Then disconnect the two coolant hones on the firewall in the engine bay. Then unbolt the box from the rest of the hvac, and it should come right out. Just be gentle when removing those hose clamps, the copper pipe on the heater core bends easily.

Do you have the A/C wiring that's under the hood? Mainly the plug that goes into the compressor.
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I do not, this one doesn't have AC. I had one truck with AC and there wasn't a separate harness under the hood for the AC, I think it was integrated into the entire harness. I think you'd be better off running a new rire for the AC compressor and then I believe the HVAC wiring under the dash is separate from the rest of the harness so you can pick one up at a junk yard and add it to your current harness. I'm not 100% on that, but I think that's how it was.

This truck only had the single dome light, like most of them have. It just pops right out, you may need to give it a gently pry with a tiny flat head. Awesome video. Maybe a stupid question but can anyone tell me if a 93 Toyota pickup dash would fit on an 88 Toyota pickup cab? Both trucks are 22re gas 4x4. The 93 is a regular cab, the 88 is extended cab. Are the mounts the same? I have a low miles running 93 cab/engine and an 88 needs an engine and the 88 computer is iffy so I was going to try the 93 computer, therefore the 93 dash/instrument cluster? Or maybe keep the 88 dash and just swap in the cluster? Please feel free to tell me I'm crazy but I'd really appreciate some real info on this. Thanks
@6thGearGarage3 жыл бұрын
I've removed both dashes and I can for sure say they aren't compatible. Also there are going to be some slight differences on those 22RE's with emissions/electronics. The good news is that you can buy used running 22R/RE's for $500 or less. Or the best option for using parts from your 93 would be to pull the motor and use the 93 head/block with the 88 intake/wiring, but then you'd still need a new ECU for the 88. But as far as mixing and matching, the block and head are going to be the only things identical on both trucks.
@littledidheknow8023 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearGarage Thanks 6th Gear! This is very helpful and makes a lot of sense. Glad I asked before trying to swap the dash. This 88 came to me with a 93 already swapped into it but they used the 93 Intake with the 88 computer without any re-wiring. It barely ran. Its a bit of a nightmare. My first thought was to get a replacement 88 but I went through two already and they both turned out to be junk. I can't find a running 88. I jumped on the 93 cause it had low miles and great compression. Could I just use an 88 intake on this 93 block/head? If only I had one of those!

Here's My Hack: Since these trucks are so old the vent plastic is very brittle and prying on it can easily crack or break it. Once you have the right side vent off and the right side dash retaining nut that secures to a fixed stud, NEVER reinstall that nut again. It will allow you to quickly and easily remove the dash pad in the future, as I have done many times since. Instead, wrap some thin medical cloth tap around the stud threads enough to fill the dash tab hole it protruded through. It will hold the dash in place and prevent any metal on metal rubbing sound. The center dash slip clip and the 5 under side dash screws will more than enough keep the dash pad secure at that end. Never had any issues with noise or vibration. It's a time and broken part saver.

When removing the steering wheel don't take the bolt off the whole way just incase you smash the steering wheel into your face

Couldn't you just drop the entire steering wheel assembly/column down by unbolting it entirely and letting it fall down?

@@6thGearGarage there is one 2" long crack and 2 holes with a bit of an impression left from a tack that was installed by previous owner. But its still very descent. Im wrapping it cause i have an addiction to modifying things and at this point with my yota theres not a whole lot left lol ive been home since covid started and been plucking away at it steady.
