this is prob the most realistic situation that most people experience in my opinion.... many other youtube channels that claim (respectfully to them with no prejudice) they are no mechanics/craftsmen etc and were not so long ago fixing cars in parking lots and yet when they show a repair, its not just seamless, but it it feels like they have done it a million times prior, ...their "fist attempt" at it fits /goes in smoothly like a glove., in short they get it right the first time around, This guy, however, shows that for every fitting of something once but the need to remove it 10 times to get something else done prior, or for example how other people just seem to minimally weld something with the least amounts of spot/tac welds, while I seem to need a million other jigsaw puzzle pieces and a gazillion welds to plug up a hole, …you get the point...anyway I speak for myself, maybe because I ain't so talented, (or suggesting for that matter this person in the video isn't) but I certainly have the same experience and can relate. Not saying that it should be so for everyone else just that for once I don't feel envious and jealous of how other people get it right the first time round or very quickly (granted I know its video editing magic...but still)

I recently purchased a rust free 97 FZJ80 with 373,XXX miles a few months back and immediately drove it from Tennessee up to Michigan and it's been bulletproof for me so far (parked for the winter though). The only engine work that has been done to it is PM headgasket replacement and all oil gaskets replaced by the previous owner at 190,XXX miles. It was completely stock when I picked it up and will start right up after sitting for a few weeks at a time. Absolutely love this beast!

Isn’t this what dry ice blasting is for or do I have that wrong?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 23 сағат бұрын
Dry Ice Blasting is more for detailing, as it removes dirt and grease but doesn't harm the original substrate. Since restoring this frame, I've purchased a 2000w laser cleaner that I'll be using to strip the frame of the 4runner I'm currently restoring. I'm actually editing a video about the machine right now, should be live next week!

Is it really a good rear end if there are metal chunks?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 23 сағат бұрын
Metal chunks inside the rear end is definitely not good. The fluid in this one was clean though, so I ended up using cleaning the exterior, painting it and used it.

Great video and super informative. I appreciate you linking all supplies too. I’m curious though, where did you buy the fender for so cheap? Fully aware it’s a 6 yr old vid but I’m looking for a fender for my Audi and they’re all very expensive compared to $30 haha
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 23 сағат бұрын
I got lucky and found a cheap one on ebay. I'm sure it would cost 2x that amount now. And then I'm sure Audi parts are a lot more $$$ than Toyota parts. You should look for a used OEM one... always better quality then the cheap thin aftermarket ones.

@6thGearGarage

It was standard body filler
@TheDarkestForce
@TheDarkestForce 21 сағат бұрын
@@6thGearGarage The reason I asked was the plastic spoiler on my car needed a touch up. I called 3M who makes Bondo and they told me it would not adhere to plastic. So I spent an exorbitant amount of time sanding out all the issues. Next time I WILL be using body filler on plastic if needed. Thanks for making the video.

I am stuck trying to get the oil seal on the hub, it will not go on. It looks like the hub is damaged from years of beating on it. I'm guessing someone didn't use a brass drift at some point. Any idea on how to get that on??
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 23 сағат бұрын
You could try to re-smooth the mounting area with a file and sandpaper to take down any uneven high points. But if the damage is done, I'd cut my losses and replace the hub, especially on a daily driver.

Is it possible to swap six studs on that chassis?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage Күн бұрын
Yes you can use a 4x4 rear end, but 4WD axles are spring over, 2wd are spring under. So fab work needed. The front hub/brake setup from a 4x4 should work on 2wd spindle/knuckle. may beed a custom bracket for mounting the caliper. But I think you'd still need to update to the 84+ knuckle/front suspension.

For the sunroof, you might try and contact a place called Bernardi parts. They often stock parts for older vehicles like this one and there's a chance that they might have what you're looking for. Also if you can get the part number by the VIN then you can google it and see if you can find a vendor that carries it. Hope this helps!

To get the high beam indicator working again, You will probably need to install a resistor because the relay thinks the bulb is burned out because LED's draw less power.

if you are going to adjust your camber you should do that first then adjust your toe because when you adjust your camber it will change your toe. also roll the vehicle back and forth and bounce it up and down to re settle the suspension after making changes and re check it. cool tool though. quicker and easier to set up than stringlines.
