Hello, very nice and emotional video. I remember my concern when you had a lot of problems fixing the breaks at the beginning of the Volvo conversion. I am very happy to see your satisfaction in a such special place. I live very close to Barcelona. If you will be in this area, I would love to meet you and see Volvo live. I would like to help you if you need anything. Thank you for sharing your good and bad moments.

A good video. I started dipping in and out of your channel in the jeep days in Aus ( I loved the car and have been to/would love to see some of the areas you visited) and in a funny turn of events (at least to me) we have now crossed paths at Carcassonne. We had a great couple of weeks in the Tarn Gorges area early summer by Wrangler (from Scotland) and took a trip West to Carcassonne purely for the citadel. Magic part of the world, safe travels.

Epic. A word that I seldom use, but it seems to fit here. Those views, and those ancient walls and halls! Not to mention the history lesson on castle-staircases. That last cinematic-edit was some of the best that I have seen on KZbin. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have such a photogenic subject! Beautifully done, and makes me more eager than ever to go and explore off the beaten path in southern France. Happy trails to you!

Originally from London England, i got to see a lot of castles and ruins. I have always been fascinated by them and the construction of them. It just blows me away with how much work was involved in building them.but what is more impressive, they are still standing for all of us to see . I'm living in vancouver bc now, but where we might not have castles, we do have mountains and oceans. Love watching your videos, but I really love your truck setup just as much😊.

I am glad to see you have no problems with the recent cold weather and Skadi working properly. If you liked the road around 11:30, you will be grinning when you travel through "Desfiladero de los Beyos" (road N-625), "Desfiladero de la Hermida" (road N-621) and the road close to Cain the Valdeon. They are narrow with towering limestone walls surrounding them. A couple of suggestions more now that you are closing to Spain: - I mention in a previous video about Ordesa, that is a must for me. If you decide to do the walk to the Horse tail cascade, don't do the other way around using the same path. There is a second path to the left, "Senda de los cazadores", that doesn't lose altitude and goes pretty flat until the start of the valley. On the highest point there is a great viewpoint that will let you admire the valley even more (if you decide to do the hike). Don't do it with snow. - Around the corner of Ordesa there is Añisclo, another valley with that you should check since you are already there. There is a easy and flat cave if you like them too. - Since you are in low season, some places "playa de Itzurun" and "Gaztelugatxe" should be nice to visit. They get very overcrowded in summer since they appeared in Game of Thrones, but now should be ok. - Another beach: Playa de las Catedrales in Galicia. - When you go to Picos de Europa (I am assuming you will go because you should), there is an offroad track that you can check. It starts in a small town called Sotres and goes to another one called Espinama. Ask the local tourist information point if it is allowed. I saw a lot of videos of people there (mainly motorbikes), but it used to be a sign saying otherwise. If you can, do it because it will be worth it. -Visit Bulnes, a small village in the middle of the mountains. There is no road access and the only way to get there used to be by foot. Now there is a "teleférico" carved through the mountain, but it is very expensive and you should hike there anyways. - Go up the Cable Car in Fuente De. It is not cheap, but worth it as long as there is no fog. It lifts you from the valley to the middle of the mountains (elevation gain of 750m in only 4 minutes). Most probably there will be snow up there but those cheap light crampons that you can get in Decathlon are enough to visit the place. - Still in Picos de Europa, Covadonga. Both the lakes and the chappel. Check for fog whe you go up to the lakes. Go there first, then visit the chappel on your way down. It should be less crowds that way. - More to the west, in Galicia, there is "Torre de Hercules". It is the oldest lighthouse in the world still working. Built by the Romans. - Visit a Castro in Galicia. There are several, so you can choose. - Of course, the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. You should be aware of that place since it is one of those places that gets promoted in tourist ads, but just in case...

Not gonna lie, I'm much more into the build than the travels. But I'm still enjoying the vids and will stick around for them. Especially when the travels brings you to castles and such, which is my jam. Speaking of, pretty much all of the castle stairway bit has been debunked, but Ino shame for you not knowing. Most of us are still told the old "ideas", including me until recently. Keep up the good work, and fingers crossed the weather will be jind to you. Looking forward to the next vid.
@TheOutFit18 күн бұрын
No way tell me more. How is the stairway design debunked? Cheers
@MichaelStaghorn18 күн бұрын
@@TheOutFit I'll preface by saying that much of medieval debunking is - just like the original ideas - based on assumptions, as there often are no or few written contemporary sources stating "we are/aren't doing something this or that way because...". The main difference being that in the past, some toff with too much free time and disposable income trotted around in the industrial age, saw stuff, made conjecture and in the spirit of the age published a book about it, presenting it as facts. These days, scholars are more open to actually try something out rather than just assuming their theory is the Oone and only truth. There are some fascinating deep-dives (often called experimental archaeology) out there that, for example, show that the idea of a "paper armour" isn't as stupid as it sounds. As castles did (at least) double duty as fortification and home of the ruler, space was at a premium (even more so than today), and recreations have shown that stair steps were substantially more resource intensive (and thus more expensive) to make than "mere" building stones. Especially bigger ones. Hence, smaller staircases. If you're fighting opponents coming up the stairs means your walls, maybe even your keep, have been breached - you've pretty much already lost. And it'll be much easier to just starve or burn you out. Oh, and the clockwise thing: While yes, most do go that way, there's something like a 3rd of them (pulling this number from memory) going the other way, so the current theory today is that it was mostly down to preference/aesthetics. The popular idea that "I have the High Ground™, therefore I win!" is an over-simplified and misunderstood one. Having the high ground has a strategic benefit in that it's easier to survey a larger area of the field of battle, and makes charges somewhat easier (especially so for cavalry). But modern studies have shown that in individual combat, it can even be detrimental. Take the stairway as an example. You'll have a hard time efficiently reaching the opponent below you (especially if you try to use a shield at the same time), while they'll hold their shield over their head and jab at your legs and feet (even if it's "only" with a short spear or in the off hand) until you decide you'd rather be somewhere else. As I said, a lot of the current theories are just that, like the previous ones. But instead of the old "I see this; I think that; therefore it is!", these days it's more "I see this; I think that; let's try it!". Oh! Oh! Oh! If you get the chance, you should absolutely visit Château de Guédelon! Such an epic project; I hope to go there myself someday. Unfortunately, there are so many misconceptions around that are still presented as facts. Like ninja's black suit (base on theatrical stage hand dress); "you lose most of your body heat from your head" (based on a military study of people dressed in winter clothes but with bare heads); "the human body has 100,000 km of blood vessels" (based on ONE guy making a wild guess over a century ago - it's only between a 5th and 10th of that). Even the idea of birds migrating (rather than disappearing in various weird ways, like sleeping at the bottom of rivers) are not as old as one might think. So yeah, the signal to noise ratio of information is appalling. As a kid, I was taught Vikings had horned helmets (a theatrical prop from the Nibelungen opera). And I'm a £%$&€ Swede - we should know better! All we can do is keep an open mind, (gently) pass on knowledge we gather, and always be ready to re-evaluate. Geeez, this ended up being a massive wall-o-text! Oh well; hopefully you found something interesting in it. 🤷♂😂
