“It’s a different world now. It’s a different way of selling music, it’s a different way of listening to music… We try to play the game as best as we can within the rulebook.”
We had the pleasure to talk to one of the hardest-working drummers in the biz: Mr Dave Weckl. In this #fhtz episode, Dave elaborates on the ups and downs of digital technology in the case of music.

Great interview and see Dave still going after three decades along w Vinnie and others from that era! Good thing is that Dave still, plays with musicians he has worked with for so many years and that keeps him going!

Thanks for watching this interview, Mark. Dave is truly a great artist with a good sense for the business side of the industry. And, he has kept his human touch in everything he has been doing. It was a real pleasure talking to him. And, he is just fabulous to watch perform onstage 👍 Sebi

Another reason why it's hard for musicians and bands to make a living and make it big,I think it's because of how many artists there are nowadays... It's really hard to follow everyone. Really it's overwhelming. People just can't keep up with everything. And it's kind of scary at the same time. I heard a good thought on the Jamey Jasta Podcast with Riley Gale of Power Trip. Something along the lines of if this keeps going, what if people just stop caring? Not just in music but art in general. Cause every artist is trying to win more fans over. I mean that's how you survive. But... It could get to the point where people will just get tired of all of this. Though I hope not. But it's just a thought.

That's a very good point, Evaldas. More and more distractions keep people from focusing on something or even retain a certain message, if not even the interest in something. Attention deficit is an issue closely connected to the mentioned problem. However, I want to believe that 'true fans', people that feel inspired and love the art provided by artists they admire and want to support, will always exist. Yes, more people walk the earth, hence, more distractions occur. But that means that there will also be more potential 'true fans' that will fall in love with an artist or a band and support them. Again, this is just my subjective opinion, not based upon any stats, and it makes me feel better 😄 ...thanks for watching! 🙌 Sebi

There have always been tons of artists, however the medium to self-promote makes it easier for people to get noticed.

Totally agree as I was in the business during the .’80s ‘90s and was so much easier to contact musicians to get bands together and to make a living! People listened more because they weren’t swamped with everyone doing the same thing now it’s become impossible

great interview from one of the greatest versátiles jazz drummer around where you actually can hear with his own words how up side down the music business is, and this world wide not do mention they not god paided live gigs and with a free entrance politic for jazz festival happens in mexico where you can listen to pat metheny chick corea or markus miller for free helps not eather . so whats the answer i dond know maybe we should begin a general strike against all those internet posting services and not posting any more musical stuff to get some base to discus new politics of how should a musican get paid , maybe first creativ ones because i also see that youtube is full of people they just siting there with a acoustic guitar play a cover and have a millon of view get paid for it and dondt pay a cent of any kind of rights maybe you tube should think about to get them to pay some fee for playing unauthorized material and to get the money back to the original creator but anyway i dondt know just a thought from a profesional musican with 30 years of playing and be around if you like check out my stuff soundcloud.com/tom-kubin

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts with us, Tom. Yes, the music business underwent drastic changes and there are several ways to adapt to it. I feel Dave has found a good way for himself. He is not only a phenomenal musician, he also understands how to navigate the new structure of the music business. I cannot comment on his financial situation, but having various sources of revenue it may lessen financial pressure, if one source decreases. I think, aspiring and young musicians should consider a personal business model as propagated by Dave. I definitely would :) / Sebi
