If you are an experienced traveller, then you are familiar with some of the basic tourist traps worldwide. In this video I summarize the most common tourist traps specific to Budapest and mention some mistakes that tourists make.
#1: Taxis are a problem almost everywhere, so I give some tips
#2: Just having a ticket for the public transport is not enough, you must validate it! (Unfortunately the controllers often target tourists specifically, this is a disgusting practice that I as a local am ashamed of.)
#3: Use alternative methods of sightseeing than those "hop on, hop off" buses (walking tours are wonderful, but the public transport is also a great option)
#4: "Tourist menus" are a ripoff (actually all restaurants that have people begging you to come in is a sure bet to be avoided)
#5: Beware of pickpockets and street scams such as the notorious "shell games". (Also, guys: don't be so naive to believe that random girls find you irresistibly attractive!)
#6: Never change money on the street, but also try to avoid exchange office in touristy places (such as the airport and train stations)
#7: Do have some local cash with you for unexpected situations where credit cards are not accepted
+1: Do yourself a favor and visit some of the less crowded baths a chance (Széchenyi and Gellért baths have become too touristy!)

I am a proud local Hungarian living in Budapest.
I was born and have lived in this beautiful city, Budapest for decades. I am in love with it - and not because I haven’t seen anything else. I am a seasoned traveller and I have also spent many years living abroad. However, my heart (and wife, and jobs and goulash soup and lángos) have pulled me back to my birth town. I love this city and know it inside out.
If you are fed up with the formal (and often wrong) recommendations of guide books, then follow my channel to find advice from a real local. I give you practical tips, show you cool spots and help you avoid tourist traps.
I live and love Budapest, I want to share my tips with you.

All very valid points. One more that I can add is sadly there are a lot of organised beggars and be careful with it. They can be very convincing and aggressive to give them money.

I just tumbled into a scam lol. Yellow cab from the Expo Congress Hotel back to the airport. It was a very nice talky man, but once arrived he casually said 'please swipe your card' in the middle of his story, as if nothing to pay attention to was going on. He charged a damn 12000 HUF or 33 euros. The way from the airport to the hotel was only 19 euros. I better spent my leftover public transport tickets on the metro and bus. Oh well it's for one time only 😛. Lesson learnt.. always stay assertive, no matter how nice & comfortable things seem to be. Ask before departure how much the price is.

Love your videos, very informative. I will be visiting Budapest in April. Can you suggest any specific places where we can exchange euros/money at decent rates?
@jamespanciotti3960
@jamespanciotti3960 2 жыл бұрын
you should not change money at all. use your bank card and get money from an atm. the funds will be dispensed in the local currency. your bank will get you the best rate of exchange. I took money out in Berlin from an atm and I knew I was not getting a good rate but I did not have time to shop around. When I got home I found out my bank refused to pay the rate I had agreed to pay saving me some serious money.

I lived In BP for 3 years at the end of the 90's and had a fantastic lifestyle there. I worked out in Budaors and had a beautiful apartment just off Vaci Ut behind the Marriot Hotel - just by the Erzsebet Hid. We went out every night for dinner, even Cyrano Etterem was reasonably priced then. We often went to Gundels too when friends visited. Those were the days when you could have a great evening out on Ft2,500. Only thing that bugged us were the hookers along Vaci and the Romanian rouges along the Duna after dark.

Thank you for further information, just want to ask you one thing: I am getting ready to visit Budapest with my friends and will visit few places, partly according to some recommendations from my Hungarian friend. The Rudas Gyógyfürdő, which he recommended, looks good and I believe it will satisfy our needs, but what about Retek Bisztró in Nádor utca? Is it safe enough to go there and no tourist scams will wait there for us?

Thank you for your very insightful videos. I will be taking my son 16 years old next weekend and will be staying initially at Ensana Thermal Margaret island. We will be sauna and cold plunge but I was wondering if you could recommend a good Thai massage that doesn't break the budget. Don't want to go district V and get tourist tax. When I was last there I had a great stay but got stung alot with tourist taxs at hotels and restaurants. They have an English menu and a locals menu. I was paying Central London prices at restaurants recommended by the front desk at the Mercure on Vaci Utca. If you could please recommend a good massage I would be very appreciative

All of these this happened to me, luckily only the hotel and restaurants caught me as I really didn't expect that. I left thinking that this left a bad taste in the mouth for an otherwise great destination
