#7: 2018 Pacific Crest Trail, Cajon Pass to Acton (Mount Baden-Powell Summit)

Reaching the summit of Mount Baden-Powell was the highlight of this last section! We also passed the 400 mile mark, met new (and reconnected with old) friends, and enjoyed a nice, long weekend in the friendly mountain town of Wrightwood.

Good to see a video today. Question. I have noticed most of your food is in quart or gallon bags and then you place them in a reflectics pouch. Is that to help cook it and keep it warm and did you dehydrate all of your food prior?

Hey Michelle! We use the “FBC” or freezer bag cooking method. While we did not dehydrate our food in advance, we purchase meals we love from Packit Gourmet, Mary Jane’s Farm, Good To-Go and Mountain House. Then, we repackage them in freezer quart bags to save weight. It’s incredible how much food packaging weighs! Then, we just add boiling water to our meals (inside of the cozy bag), which keeps the meal hot while it rehydrates. We highly recommend this method, although many hikers choose to go stoveless or cook/eat food right out of their pots. We just find this method to be really convenient, while keeping the “mess” to an absolute minimum.

Also! You might’ve heard Kevan mention my oatmeal recipe haha. It’s really simple - Quaker Oats high protein oatmeal in any flavor + Nido powdered milk + your choice of nuts and dried fruits. Very filling and keeps energy high!

Best way to save some weight is by not carrying water to water......however I always carry too much water, but better too much than not enough
