The Mount Baden-Powell hike packs a lot into a relatively short distance. On your way to the summit of Mt Baden-Powell (9,399 feet), you’ll experience the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) where you can channel your inner Reese Witherspoon, 40 hardcore switchbacks, a monument for Mt Baden-Powell’s namesake, Lord Baden-Powell, they guy who founded the Boy Scouts, a barren saddle with jaw-dropping views, and a 1500-year old limber pine. And at the summit you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains. So you got all that going for you if you do the hike. It’s tough but very doable, I highly recommend it.

I recently tackled the Mount Baden Powell hike, a challenging yet rewarding trek located just outside Los Angeles in the Angeles National Forest. Starting from the Vincent Gap trailhead, this hike covers approximately four miles to the summit with a significant elevation gain of about 2,800 feet. Known for its 37 switchbacks, the trail offers a gradual but consistent uphill climb that can test the endurance of even seasoned hikers.
My journey began early in the morning to avoid the crowds and to enjoy the cool, fresh air. The trailhead, situated at around 6,500 feet, requires an Adventure Pass or a National Parks pass for parking. It's a popular starting point not only for Mount Baden Powell but also for accessing the Pacific Crest Trail. From the outset, the trail is well-marked, guiding hikers towards the summit with clear signage and offering opportunities for iconic selfies next to the PCT sign.
One of the highlights of the hike is passing the Wally Waldron tree, one of the oldest living things in the area. Estimated to be between 1,000 and 2,000 years old, this tree provides not just a historical perspective but also a moment to reflect on the longevity and resilience of nature. The climb itself is interspersed with sections that allow for brief rests, where you can enjoy the expansive views stretching north into the Mojave Desert.
As the trail ascends, the environment transitions from oak-laden paths to more barren, alpine conditions, indicating the nearing summit. The switchbacks, while numerous, are well-graded, making it possible to find a steady rhythm as you climb. Approaching the summit, the trail becomes steeper, but the reward is unparalleled views of the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains and far beyond.
The summit of Mount Baden Powell is not just a physical peak but also a place rich in scouting history, marked by a monument honoring Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts. This spot offers a perfect culmination to the hike, where one can enjoy panoramic views and perhaps a quiet moment of triumph over the challenging ascent.
For those planning this hike, it's crucial to check the road conditions via the Caltrans website, especially during winter, as the trail can become hazardous in snow conditions. In terms of gear, trail runners and trekking poles are recommended for comfort and rhythm on the switchbacks, and carrying sufficient water is a must.
Completing the Mount Baden Powell hike was not just another trek; it was a journey through history, nature, and personal endurance. For anyone looking to explore the beauty of the Angeles National Forest and test their hiking mettle, Mount Baden Powell is a destination worth every step.

I hiked it in 2014 when I was only 72, and again when I was 78. Now that I'm all grown up (81), I'm planning a return late next spring. The uphill hike is just an enjoyable slog, physically and mentally. It's not an easy climb, but it's not really difficult either. I took 3 hours going up. Frequent breaks to enjoy the changing views and the beauty of the terrain. The ridge where the old trees are is spectacular as is the view in ALL directions from the summit. It's a beautiful hike, uncrowded during the week. The return trip isn't near as fun. I find downhills to be far more difficult than uphills and coming back it's all downhill! My back and legs were screaming by the time I got back to the parking lot all because of the downhill. I could barely climb up into the cab of my truck. I'm not a hardcore hiker, and don't take on anything really challenging because a fall at my age is more serious than the same fall for someone younger. I always use hiking poles for added safety. I hike about 12 miles a week in hilly desert terrain (Inland Empire). I say this to encourage others. Mt B-P is very doable for anyone in decent condition. You don't need to be a mountain goat to handle it. Endurance is more important than anything else on that hike.

I used to do a LOT of hiking in the Angeles Crest when I lived near LAX. I hiked Baden Powel in late 70s/early 80s...probably 1978 in the spring/summer between high school and college. IIRC, I started at Islip Saddle so it was a longer hike, but a more gradual climb. In those days, our shorts were shorter and I remember a killer sunburn on my legs from that hike. Ha! I'd love to get up there again! I am glad your heart didn't explode in your chest. As an older hiker/local hill walker, I know the feeling.

Just got home from hiking the Wave, Angels Landing, the Watchman, Zion Canyon Overlook, The Grotto, Zion Narrows and Valley of Fire. It was an epic 4 day trip with perfect weather and no crowds. Thanks for the inspiration.

Nice job! As always I ask was the Angel scary? It scares me. I sat at Scour Lookout 👀 for 30 minutes, and then continued up West Rim Trail. It was awesome.

Strange seeing that summit w/o a ton of other hikers. Even 20+ years ago, there were so many up there (on weekends).

What a great video. Last year I tried to hike this trail in October but the area had an early season snowstorm. I finally got to hike the trail this year in September and it was great. As you mentioned it's a long, steady climb and not a heart busting hike. Now the video you posted regarding Mugu Peak, that's a heart buster.

Great video as always! This is one of my favorite hikes. I think I am on nine or 10 times now the first time I did it I was a Boy Scout. My troop went up and we recited the oath and law around the monument. It was a memory I will never forget.
