I've made these exact arguments to diesel fans. Usually falls on deaf ears. Cognitive bias. Doesn't matter the facts given, they believe what they want. The only legitimate reason for a diesel is because you want one. I just hope that Ford doesn't chicken out like they did with the excursion.

I have a 2001 f250 4x4, 7.3, I don't work it as hard as many people do. I'm not hauling 5 to 26 thousand pounds daily, although I am a mechanic of all kinds. Worked on autos and small engines for 30 plus yrs, kept up my own priorities on my vehicles, also made side moneys to make the 7.3 diesel turbo work for me, I purchased mine used, it had 171,000 miles on it, had to repair the harness to the transfer case switch, 4x4 worked well, then I replaced all seals, ball joints and ujoints, changed all fluids including rear and front pumpkin. I've replaced my batteries every 3yrs, battery harnesses every 7yrs due tome not fully keeping up with it, when I purchase one part, I purchase at least 2 extra, possibly 3 depending upon my notes of what made it longer and what didn't, therefore I still can, running at 400,000 miles and still trucking, can haul or pull anything it will. At most I've pulled 20,000 with no issues, and it pulls at a lower rpm than a gasser engine. With less wear, because I keep up with it

Your argument is likely going piss off diesel owners everywhere, but I completely agree with everything you’ve said. You cannot beat the value for the money out of the new 7.3, no matter how look at it. It is every bit as capable of pulling anything that a modern diesel can. You can look at the numbers from the best Diesel engines ever produced in the last few decades and realize the numbers the 7.3 gas makes compared to them are not far off. The 7.3 Powerstroke from the 2002 model year was 250hp and 505ft/lb torque. The 2002 5.9 24v Cummins was 235hp and 460ft/lb torque. Those motors moved anything you hooked them in their day. It’s crazy to see a gas motor with almost double the horsepower and nearly the same torque. This 7.3 gas motor will absolutely be the way I go when I purchase my next pickup.

Maybe most owners won't say it but the costly repairs on current diesels make them completely unattractive. I really think that Ford nailed it with the Godzilla engine. I think with proper maintenance, why wouldn’t it go 300k? If a Chevy LS can, not being built near as well, this engine should be amazing. I will get one in my next 550 service truck vs the diesel.

I disagree I’ve ran a fleet of chevys and LS is very solid once you turn off the cylinder deactivation. I’m a chevy guy Ive had SmallBlock350s, Ls 5.3, Ls 6.2s, Lbz duramax Lmm duramax. My favorite of all Chevy engines in the last 20 years is the 8.1 vortec, simple like a gasser, pulled like a diesel, cheap to maintain, and if Chevy doesn’t bring it back I’m switching to Ford for the 7.3 gasser.

@@messagefamilystyled1101 I think he meant not built “near as well” objectively. Like a 7.3 Godzilla isn’t built nearly as well as a 6.7 power stroke. Why? Doesn’t have a compacted graphite iron block, doesn’t have nearly as durable lifters or pushrods or connecting rods. Things like that.

@@francesco1998 Objectively, I don't get what the higher quality engine build on the 6.7 matters when you're paying out the nose to maintain the emissions equipment. Unless the 7.3 is having some catastrophic failure in less than 250-300k miles, you are way ahead with money... and that's setting aside the fact you can replace that entire engine for the cost of the 7.3 anyway... so now you're eclipsing or exceeding the lifespan of the 6.7 without the exponentially higher maintenance costs. Mind you, next to no one is driving that powerstroke over 250-300k miles without putting at least 10-20k back into it.

I would not be worried about it at all. Gas engines usually rev to around 6-7k wide open so you are only really using 2/3 of the available rpm. Every diesel guy I know that rides with me when towing makes a big deal of how my gas truck is running 2500-3000 rpm on the highway but it is not really that high if you think about where the redline is. Gas engines are designed to rev. If it was bad for it, they would not let you do it. Keep up the vids!

I would have went with a 7.3 gas truck if I could have found one when I was looking in Dec 2019. I ended up buying a really clean Cummins with 30k miles and done a few reliability mods to it. The 7.3 gasser will honestly probably last around the same mileage as a diesel engine. I don't need a diesel, but I do like how they make power at such a low RPM. Seems to me that even if you live in a state without emissions testing that deleting a diesel with a CP4 still leaves you with that costly time bomb. I want to get into non-CDL hotshot and I’m seriously considering the gas 7.3. I have a lot of the same concerns with cost and reliability of a new diesel. But what’s really pushing me towards a 7.3L is shortages. Let’s say a CP4 fails on a 6.7, all the sudden I’m not rolling for 2-4 weeks because of all of the supply chain shortages. A month of expenses with no money coming in is enough to cripple most businesses. Or I could just buy a used 7.3, and let it sit at the house and if a catastrophic failure happens, I know worst case I can be back on the road in a week.

Can you do a video on your thoughts of the new 7.3L Godzilla gas V8 in the Ford compared to the 6.4L Hemi in the Ram 2500? comparing both powertrains and what you feel the major pros/cons are of each one. Obviously you spend your money on the Ford 250, but I would still be curious to hear what your thoughts are regarding the 6.4L Hemi and the 8-speed?

I guess i you got something to prove the new diesels are pretty nice. But I couldn't see a reason for it. I'd be afraid of having the SCR system mess up and be limited to 50MPH in the middle of nowhere.

Hey Colton. My 7.3 PS is close to 200k (had it since 107K) should I be expected to be running into any problems soon? So far I haven’t replaced anything beside fluids and 1 CPS. Oh and brakes. I also have towed about 30K of those miles. Quite a few vehicles and a sailboat not any farm equipment. So nothing crazy. 5th wheel.

7.3 is new long term motor. I'm planning geting one in f450. 20 thousand of towing plenty. Plus from want Iv seen. Most guys geting around 10mpg towing. That pretty good in my mind. For get the diesel. There over priced and cost too much to maintain. Big block is way too go.

The old days when diesels lasts more than gas engines are gone. High power density and electronic injection make them to have failures, and really costly failures, so, if I have to take risks, thanks but I prefer low costs risks. I had seen premature wear (mostly if the driver always drive pedal to the metal, that's why many commercial engines are power under rated) and common rail problems from all manufacturers. In my country we see modern engines with lower durability (not only diesel) because downsizing and high specific power. Greetings

Anyone who thinks this simply doesn't know how engines work. Durability and low maintenance costs are the main advantage of gasser HD trucks. Don't even get me started on today's diesels... reliability is gone for sports car power bragging rights

Colton I got to ask you a question. If you didnt want the 6.7 powerstroke and you wanted a gas, why did you choose the 7.3 over the 6.2?
@ColtWR
@ColtWR 3 жыл бұрын
Mostly because I'm not the world's biggest overhead cam fan. They tend to be more Rev happy and produce all the power high in rpms as well as problematic timing chains.
@williamrussomano3014
@williamrussomano3014 3 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. I must say though, the 6.2 is actually a much better engine than a lot of individuals give it credit for. I own two of them and both have over 100,000k on them and i have pushed them to places where FORD THEMSELVES would never push the 6.2 to. Try a f350 dually crew cab long bed 6.2 grossing out at 59,200lbs for a 1800k trip up and down mountain passes. My 350 6.2 has 430 gears which helps.

@ColtWR
@ColtWR 3 жыл бұрын
You could yes, I have had many myself and they did me well. But you are throwing a warranty to the wind if you have one. And in these times people have a hard time with tuning support due to so much turn over in epa lawsuits. If that's a risk you want to deal with then yes that is the answer. But that's an expensive alternative that still has costly maintenance.
@oddlyrightoddlyright2475

@@ColtWR the chevys and Fords are pretty much cost prohibitive to delete….the Cummins however is still just a Cummins underneath all that crap..I’ve heard 1-1.5k to delete it then just run it….granted if the truck is a write off who cares…I wouldn’t dare delete a commercial use truck….mainly because I think if I was slapped with a 100k fine for trying to avoid thousands of dollars and down time on a tool that I paid 60-80k for I might just end up hunting some commies Down so I could peacefully protest their ass….

@RMC2021

I don’t disagree with the fact that the diesel is more expensive to get into, more expensive to maintain, and more expensive to repair. Dollar to dollar, you’ll get more for your money with the gas motor. Money of course isn’t everything… performance wise, the gas motor won’t compare to the power output you get with the diesel. You are not going to tow 18k-35k with that 7.3 gas motor and have it last as long as the diesel, nor will the 7.3 do the tasks as easy as the diesel will. The diesel motor is made to pull all the time which is why any industry where equipment is used to tackle heavy tasks used a diesel motor. From construction equipment, to hot shot trucking, to over the road trucking, the diesel is king.
@darrickandhollybrown1405
@darrickandhollybrown1405 3 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. No one would argue, gas engines are cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Towing with a diesel is so much better of a driving experience. It's like comparing a Ford focus to a mustang and someone arguing, "well i just couldn't justify the mustang so I got this focus and will never go back"
@craigwheeler2057
@craigwheeler2057 3 жыл бұрын
Hey RC- agree. for those of us that tow 15k loads or less, the 7.3 is a great alternative to diesel. For over the road hot shots & trucking diesel is the way to go.

It's all a matter of perspective. People must understand the agenda on Ford's part. Try to salvage some of the Old American V-8 class. Personally if a good old engine makes you question your intelligence than you're with the right one. My 03' F150 is doing well more an everyday driver @261,000 miles collected. These Godzilla'are still infants....but several years in the making.
